A new report raises uncertainty about when pre-orders for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 will open at major retailers. Insider Gaming, which claims to have seen internal emails and documents from a major U.S. retailer, reports that the console’s launch is scheduled for June, as previously rumored. However, the same communications indicate that pre-orders will begin on April 9, a week after a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2, where more details about the console, its release date, and the games available at launch will be provided.

According to the retailer’s documents, during the Nintendo Direct it will be mentioned that pre-orders will be “coming soon,” revealing a countdown that will culminate on April 9. This retailer, whose identity has not been disclosed by Insider Gaming, also plans to offer an “exclusive collectible coin” for those who make the pre-order. Given the anticipation of fans, the retailer estimates that it will sell out its allocation of consoles on the first day, due to a “limited allocation” provided by Nintendo.
However, the date of April 9 contrasts with a recent leak from Best Buy Canada, which had announced that pre-orders would begin on the same day as the Nintendo Direct, that is, April 2. This post has since been removed.
Regardless of when the pre-sales finally open, enthusiasts won’t have to wait long to receive official information from the Nintendo event. Meanwhile, speculation surrounds Nintendo’s plans, including that the new console will be able to convert digital game purchases into Virtual Cards that will be shared between consoles and accounts within the same family plan. Additionally, a report suggests that the Switch 2’s game lineup will be released in three phases, starting with first-party titles in June, followed by greater third-party support in the fall, and a second wave during the holiday season.
