The creator of Dragon Quest claims that he will continue to personally oversee the franchise until the day he dies

Yuji Horii, the iconic creator of the Dragon Quest series, has revealed his intentions to continue overseeing the JRPG franchise until his death. Now at 71 years old, Horii has been involved in every installment since the release of the first game in 1986, and he considers the series to be his “child.” In an interview with Game Informer, he stated: “In recent years, I have started to rely more on other members to work on parts of the Dragon Quest titles. But still, I want to remain involved to oversee everything. I really love it.” The series is like a child to him […]

I really love it.”

The series is like a child to him

The designer and video game director aims to witness the 50th anniversary of Dragon Quest in 2036, the year he will be 82 years old, which raises the possibility that he will continue his creative work in the franchise. Throughout his career, Horii has shown that he remains an influential and relevant figure in the video game industry, recalling the success of Dragon Quest XI, one of the most acclaimed JRPGs in recent years.

Horii and his team at Armor Project are currently working on Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, announced in 2021; however, updates on the game have been scarce. Horii has assured that the team is putting considerable effort into the game’s development and has expressed confidence that it will be “great”. While fans are hoping for more details, the creator has promised that the next title will focus on improving the player experience, addressing one of the most criticized aspects of the original: the time needed to reach the first battle.

In this context, Horii continues to reaffirm his commitment to the series, which promises an exciting future for Dragon Quest, one of the most beloved franchises in the world of video games.

Toby Fox, creator of Undertale and Deltarune, defines his creation method as "stupid, not in a totally negative sense"

Toby Fox, creator of the acclaimed games Undertale and Deltarune, has self-identified as inefficient in his video game development methodology. This approach has led to the chapters of Deltarune being released spaced out, with chapter 1 in 2018 and chapter 2 in 2021, while chapters 3 and 4 are scheduled for 2025 and chapter 5 is not expected before the first half of 2026. Toby Fox, creator of the acclaimed games Undertale and Deltarune, has self-identified as inefficient in his video game development methodology. This approach has led to the chapters of Deltarune being released sporadically, with chapter 1 in 2018 and chapter 2 in 2021, while chapters 3 and 4 are scheduled for 2025 and chapter 5 is not expected before the first half of 2026.

Stupid, but in a good way

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Fox joked about his development style, describing it as “stupid,” although he also acknowledged that it is precisely this consistent workload that has given a unique charm to his games, managing to attract a vast fan base. “I don’t think [my creation method] is stupid, at least not in a totally negative sense. Clearly, many people are happy with the result,” he stated.

Unlike other RPGs where enemies tend to have similar attack patterns, Deltarune offers unique encounters, each with innovative mechanics and puzzles. Fox emphasized that their approach is not simply based on modifying statistics, but on providing completely new and original experiences in each combat and area of the game. “Everything in the game is simply a container for a never-before-seen mechanic,” he explained.

Regarding the wait for future chapters, Fox indicated that the decision of whether it has been worth it will depend on the players. However, he made it clear that there are no longer external factors influencing the release date of chapter 5, which means that the team now has greater control over the development process: “We will release it when it’s ready”.

One of the largest video game media outlets in the US returns after a surprising closure

The iconic video game magazine Game Informer has announced its return after its sudden closure in August 2024. In an official statement, the Game Informer team shared the exciting news, stating: “The whole team is back and we are eager to reconnect with you”. This return comes thanks to the acquisition of the magazine by the video game studio Gunzilla, which has also re-hired all the staff who worked on the publication before its closure.

One of the veteran media outlets in the US makes a grand return

Matt Miller, editor-in-chief of Game Informer, explained that the rehiring of the team ensures the continuity of the magazine’s identity: “We are committed to maintaining an unbreakable identity of who we are and what we represent”. Gunzilla has promised that Game Informer will operate independently, ensuring that “100% of the decisions about what we cover and how we do it will come from our editorial team.” Miller emphasized that Gunzilla recognizes the potential of Game Informer and its desire for the magazine to operate without external pressures.

In addition to the reactivation of its website, which already has many years of accumulated content, Game Informer has confirmed the return of its print magazine. Ethe team’s goal is to launch a “bigger and better” version than before, with additional membership and subscription benefits. Miller also mentioned the intention to expand audiovisual content, such as videos and live broadcasts, as well as diversify the voices and partnerships that will contribute to its coverage.

More details about membership and subscription options are expected to be revealed in the near future, and interested parties are encouraged to create a new Game Informer account to stay updated on the news. Before its closure, Game Informer was one of the longest-running video game media outlets in North America, founded in 1991 and unexpectedly closed by GameStop, leaving its staff without warning while they were in an advanced production process for their next issue.
