The video game division of Microsoft has gone through one of the most critical moments in its recent history, being labeled by many as the “darkest day” for Xbox. In a drastic turn of events, numerous layoffs have impacted its main studios, including Halo Studios and Blizzard, creating an atmosphere of tension and concern among employees.
The new Halos might never exist
In the case of Halo Studios, it is reported that the layoffs have affected a team working on multiple projects in the Halo franchise, including a sequel to Halo Infinite and a possible remaster of the original installment. Internal sources indicate that team morale is low, with an anonymous developer citing: “I don’t think anyone is really satisfied with the quality of the product at this time. There has been a lot of tension.” This environment has been fueled by the perception that the company is looking to replace staff with artificial intelligence, which has raised even more concerns about the future of video game development in the division.
On the other hand, Blizzard has made a difficult decision to cancel the development of new content for Warcraft Rumble, their latest mobile game. Despite the team’s efforts to improve the player experience, the lack of results has led the company to lay off most of the Warcraft Rumble team. Although the game will remain available for download and patches will be released, it is expected that there will be no significant updates in the short term.
The current situation of Xbox reflects internal tensions and an apparent inability to deliver effectively in the market, highlighting the urgent need for restructuring and clear direction in a highly competitive environment.
