Neil Druckmann, the acclaimed creator of the HBO series The Last of Us, has decided to leave his position in production to focus on his next project: the video game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog. Druckmann has described his work on the television adaptation as a “highlight of his career” and has expressed his gratitude for having collaborated with Craig Mazin. Despite his departure, actress Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, has assured that the series will maintain the spirit of the original game, stating that Druckmann’s creative voice will still be present in the narrative. “We will always honor Neil’s work,” Ramsey commented in an interview with Variety.
The Last of Us will continue even without its creator
The third season of The Last of Us is already in production and will focus on the story of Abby, a key character in the game’s narrative. Although an official release date has not been set, the premiere is estimated to be in 2027. During a conversation about the future of the series, HBO chief Casey Bloys noted that it has not yet been decided how many additional seasons there will be, as they are evaluating whether it will be one long season or two shorter ones. Meanwhile, the second season has been well received, accumulating 16 nominations for the Emmy Awards, bringing the total to 40 nominations in the first two seasons.
The anticipation for The Last of Us continues to grow, both for fans of the series and for fans of the video game. With Druckmann focusing on his new project, followers are eagerly waiting to see how the narrative will unfold in the upcoming season, which promises to maintain the essence of the original work, despite the changes in the creative team.
