Dragon’s Dogma 2 has reached a significant milestone by selling 4 million copies since its release in November 2023. This number, while lower than other standout titles from Capcom, represents half of the total sales of the original game in its 11 years of existence, a remarkable achievement in just one year. The originality and charming design of the previous Dragon’s Dogma, which cultivated a fervent cult following, seem to have captured attention again with its sequel.
A tremendously original game
The success of the original game was driven by its expansion, Dark Arisen, which revitalized its content and turned it into a cult classic. Now, players are wondering if Dragon’s Dogma 2 will receive a similar expansion in the future. However, the departure of Hideaki Itsuno, director of both installments, shortly after the release of the sequel raises doubts about the development of possible additional content. Nevertheless, Kento Kinoshita, who designed Dragon’s Dogma 2, could take on the challenge if Capcom decides to move in this direction.
The game has received mixed reviews, especially due to technical issues in its PC version and controversies surrounding the microtransactions that have affected the user experience. However, despite these challenges, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been able to establish a solid fan base, thanks to its ambition and the innovations it offers compared to its predecessor.
In terms of sales, the performance of Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been overshadowed by Monster Hunter Wilds, which has sold over 10 million copies since its release in February 2023. With this in mind, although the future of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and potential expansions is uncertain, the initial success has kept the conversation about this title and its future development alive, which may still surprise the gaming community.
