Drivers warned: Kia’s 2025 EV9 may experience loss of propulsion

Drivers warned: Kia’s 2025 EV9 may experience loss of propulsion

Kia is issuing another recall for its 2025 EV9 model due to potentially faulty rear gear drive units that could result in a loss of propulsion.

The recall affects just 342 units of the three-row electric SUV, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noting that the problem lies with motor shafts that may have been improperly welded during assembly by a supplier.

If a defect occurs, drivers may experience reduced acceleration, diminished driving power, unusual noises from the driveline, and a warning message on the dashboard indicating “Check AWD/4WD.”

14 EV9s, are actually impacted by this defect

Kia estimates that only about 4% of the recalled vehicles, roughly 14 EV9s, are actually impacted by this defect. Notably, the issue has not been found in the front drive units, which are equipped with single motors.

The recall is limited to dual-motor all-wheel drive versions of the EV9, produced in Georgia.

The remedy for affected vehicle owners will be a free replacement of the rear gear drive unit, with Kia planning to begin mailing notification letters on March 7. Owners can also reach out to Kia’s customer service at 800-333-4542 or visit the automaker’s dedicated recall website for more information. Kia’s reference number for this recall is SC337.

This marks the second recall for the 2025 EV9, which was launched in 2024 to critical acclaim. Previously, the model faced recalls due to issues with missing seat bolts and malfunctioning digital instrument clusters.

While Kia has not made significant changes to the vehicle for the 2025 model year, these persistent quality control issues raise concerns about the SUV’s reliability as it aims to establish itself in the competitive electric vehicle market.

Kia and Hyundai aim to succeed in 2025 with their electric cars

In addition, Kia has surpassed 6.4 billion euros in annual sales for the first time in 2024, achieving operating profits of 800 million euros, indicating a strong financial performance.

The “EVs for Everyone” plan by Kia includes a range of electric vehicles with prices ranging from $30,000 to $80,000, which expands its accessibility to various consumers.

For its part, the Hyundai Casper Electric has seen a significant increase in its sales, going from 186 units in January to 1,061 in February, which contributed to a 20% growth in Hyundai’s national sales.

This model is offered in Korea starting at approximately $20,000 and in Europe at a price of around $27,000, which could facilitate its success in the international market.

Both brands have announced plans to expand their electric models, with the introduction of new vehicles such as the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and the Kia EV4. With the delivery of these new models, 2025 is shaping up to be a key year for Kia, which could record its greatest success in history.

This GT model is expected to be one of the most affordable electric sports cars and, potentially, the most powerful vehicle from Kia to date. However, the question arises: will it be able to compete with the Tesla Model 3 Performance?

The EV4 is Kia’s first electric sedan and hatchback. During its event dedicated to electric vehicles, the brand showcased four versions of the EV4, including two sedans and two hatchback models, each with standard and GT-Line versions. Now, the high-performance GT model has been spotted for the first time during testing in Korea.

This is Kia’s electric sports car

The camouflaged model, recorded by HealerTV, seems to have 20-inch sporty wheels, giving it a look similar to the K8. As for technology, the interior will feature Kia’s new ccNC (Connected Navigation Cockpit), which will include dual 12.3-inch screens and wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The EV4 GT is expected to feature a dual-motor AWD powertrain, although exact specifications will be revealed closer to its official launch. In comparison, the EV6 GT has 576 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

Therefore, it is likely that the Kia EV4 GT will exceed these figures, in addition to offering an estimated price that would range between $50,000 and $55,000, more affordable than many electric sports cars on the market.

To put this in perspective, the Tesla Model 3 Performance AWD has a starting price of $54,990 and offers 510 horsepower, reaching 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. The competition in the electric sports car sector is booming, and the EV4 GT could attract many consumers with competitive features and pricing.

Kia wants to conquer the electric world with new models

During its recent EV Day event, Kia presented several innovative models, including the EV4, its first electric sedan, and the PV5, an electric van aimed at businesses. However, Kia’s CEO, Ho Sung Song, emphasized the need for an even smaller and more affordable model, which could cater to a broader market.

Kia plans to sell 250,000 electric vehicles by 2025 and reach 1.6 million by 2030, which would represent about 30% of its global sales.

The Kia EV1 will compete directly with rivals like the Volkswagen ID.1 and the Volvo EX30, as consumers seek more affordable options.

With the arrival of the EV1, Kia also aims to tackle the growing competition from low-cost electric vehicles, particularly the Chinese models that are gaining ground in the global market.

No specific details about the design of the EV1 have been revealed yet, although it is expected to be more compact than the EV2, which is around 3.8 meters long.

For its part, the EV1 could have dimensions close to those of the Kia Picanto, measuring around 3.6 meters. Kia is proposing a comprehensive mobility strategy that includes both personal and commercial use, which could expand its presence in the electric vehicle market.

An affordable SUV to compete with the Chinese market

Among the innovative features of the EV2 are a flat floor, a wide-opening rear hatch, and removable triangular speakers.

However, precise technical details are still scarce. The EV2 is expected to use a lower-cost version of the E-GMP architecture for electric vehicles, which will allow for a more accessible approach in the market.

Kia has mentioned that the model will feature 400-volt charging instead of the 800 volts available in other models on the same platform, although it is assured that bidirectional charging capability will be present.

Alongside the Concept EV2, Kia revealed the EV4 model, a compact car that will be available in sedan and hatchback versions, as well as the electric van PV5.

It is still unclear whether the EV2 will arrive in the U.S., although Kia has indicated that it is considering the possibility of bringing the EV3, EV4, and PV5 to the American market.
