Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes Are In Trouble

Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes Are In Trouble

Volkswagen is doubling down on its efforts in China, pouring significant time and resources into this crucial market as it navigates fierce competition from local automakers.

The German car manufacturer recognizes the urgent need to stay relevant amid the rapidly evolving automotive landscape, especially as domestic brands continue to gain traction.

On the electric vehicle front, the BMW i4 stands out as a solid choice in a segment that has seen declining sales for sedans.

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electric lineup but facing challenges in aesthetic appeal

Despite the overall industry trend moving away from traditional sedan formats, the i4 offers a blend of performance and sustainability that appeals to environmentally conscious consumers.

Furthermore, BMW is set to enhance the driving experience with the introduction of its next-generation software, “Panoramic iDrive,” which promises to provide seamless integration and user-friendly controls.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electric lineup but facing challenges in aesthetic appeal. Critics have pointed out that many of its electric models feature awkward styling, which has hindered their ability to attract buyers.

The automaker’s current design direction, characterized by shiny reflective surfaces and bright LED lights, has been met with skepticism, with some suggesting that it may appear better in person than it does in promotional images.

As part of its strategy to capture the growing Chinese market, Audi has launched a new exclusive brand that features uniquely crafted models and differentiated branding through its all-caps name. This move underscores the automaker’s commitment to tapping into local tastes and preferences.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen is also planning an electric variant of its iconic GTI hot hatch, although this model is not expected to debut anytime soon, leading industry experts to speculate on its design and performance features.

Mercedes-Benz makes a drastic decision for its EV division

Mercedes-Benz has decided to eliminate the use of the designation ‘EQ’ for its electric vehicles, opting for the phrase ‘with EQ technology’ to identify them within its model line. This decision aims to simplify the nomenclature of its electric cars, which until now had generated confusion among consumers due to the extensive and similar terminology used, such as in the EQS, EQE, and EQB models, among others. This decision aims to simplify the naming of its electric cars, which until now has caused confusion among consumers due to the extensive and similar terminology used, such as in the models EQS, EQE, and EQB, among others.

The brand had introduced the ‘EQ’ nomenclature in 2016, originally as a symbol of “electric intelligence,” but over time, the saturation of model names derived from this concept began to resemble a “letter soup.”

With upcoming generations, Mercedes-Benz will revert to normal naming for all its cars, including the electric ones. That means the current EQ naming system will disappear from primary titles. No more likes of EQS, EQB etc. These will be redesigned to look more "normal" as well. pic.twitter.com/T6lXh8wyHi

— Thami Masemola (@ThamiMasemola) February 25, 2025

Goodbye to the Mercedes EQ, they say goodbye to the nomenclature that has been around for almost 10 years

The company has received feedback from its customers regarding this confusion and has made the decision to address the issue, reformulating its naming strategy. In this way, electric vehicles will be treated more similarly to traditional internal combustion models.

In addition to this name change, Mercedes has announced a return to more conventional designs for its electric vehicles, such as the inclusion of a fake grille in the 2025 EQS and the adoption of less aerodynamic shapes in future models.

This return to tradition reflects an attempt to reduce the perception of conflict and friction that some consumers feel when considering electric mobility.

Mercedes follows the trend observed in other brands like Audi and BMW, which also dealt with their own challenges in the naming of their electric vehicles. The decision to introduce more familiar and accessible names for Mercedes’ electric cars could mark a turning point.

Additionally, it could open the door for other manufacturers to reconsider their own naming practices in a sector that continues its evolution towards electrification.
