This record even surpasses that of its predecessor, which had reached 116 million in its release week.

The people who have seen the trailer… convinced to watch the movie?

Like the first installment, released during the pandemic, Mortal Kombat II has an R rating, making it unsuitable for those under 18 due to its violent content and foul language. The first movie, despite its drawbacks, grossed $84.4 million worldwide, demonstrating the audience’s interest in the adaptation of this iconic fighting video game.

The film, directed once again by Simon McQuoid, continues the narrative of its predecessor, now focused on Johnny Cage, an iconic character from the Mortal Kombat universe, played by Karl Urban. Cage is introduced as an action star who becomes the new protagonist, facing creatures from Outworld that threaten the existence of Earth. The trailer provides a glimpse into his training as a champion.

The new installment also sees the addition of new faces to the cast, such as Adeline Rudolph, who will play Kitana, and Tati Gabrielle, who will join as Jade. Additionally, several actors from the first film are returning, including Lewis Tan, Ludi Lin, Jessica McNamee, and Joe Taslim, ensuring a continued connection with the previously established narrative.

Looking closely at the character you picked in the game

The trailer for the film presents a focus on Johnny Cage, who, after leaving behind his glory days, finds himself in a moment of personal crisis. Upon his return to the context of Outworld, he will be joined by characters such as Sonya Blade, Jax, Raiden, Liu Kang, and the unforgettable Kano, while the protagonist of the previous film, Cole Young, seems to take a secondary role in this installment.

Among the new additions are Kitana and Jade, who promise to be key in the plot, reflecting their relationship of friendship and enmity throughout the history of the games. Additionally, Baraka, known for his lethal skills, will also make an appearance, building expectations among the fans of the saga.

The main antagonist in this sequel is Shao Kahn, who is presented with a faithful representation from the video games, looking imposing with his skull mask and red eyes. However, the inclusion of 16 fighters in total raises concerns about narrative and character development, especially when recalling the critical failure of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997, where an overloaded cast hindered the coherence of the story.

Simon McQuoid returns as director and, while Mortal Kombat (2021) received praise and mixed reviews, it was a straightforward proposal to relaunch the franchise, which will raise expectations for this sequel, which seems poised to surpass its predecessor.

Why has ‘Mortal Kombat’ fallen behind other competitive fighting games?

‘Mortal Kombat’ was born in 1992 with the intention of competing with ‘Street Fighter II’. Its developers knew that trying to make a normal fighting game wouldn’t get them anywhere and that Midway would end up kicking ’em out. After much thought, they came to the conclusion that they had to differentiate themselves in some way. So they didn’t set any rules, simply creating an imaginative and brutal game where anything was allowed. Thirty-two years have passed and both sagas are still alive… But one, definitely, more than the other.

Fatality!

All you have to do is look at the number of players registered to compete in the game at EVO, the largest fighting-game tournament in the world. And while ‘Street Fighter 6’ will have a macro-tournament of 5,265 people and ‘Tekken 8’ will have 4,646, ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ will have to settle… for 645 aspirants. In fact, this number is surpassed by games like ‘Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike’. That must hurt.

But the pain doesn’t come only from the professional scene: On Steam, only half as many people are playing Mortal Kombat 1 as ‘Mortal Kombat 11’, the previous game in the series, and everything seems to suggest that after less than a year, this new creation by NetherRealm and Warner is already doomed. But it’s not that simple, considering that the competitive variant of ‘Mortal Kombat’ has always been anecdotal. It’s a banned game in Japan, and most players of the series prefer consoles over PC.

We don’t have exact numbers or evidence of the damage, but it’s true that many of the new mechanics have not convinced regular gamers, such as the famous Kameos (characters that provide assistance to the main character with attacks). Or maybe it’s just that we’re not quite seeing the big picture: ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ hasn’t wanted to focus on the elitism of combat in the style of ‘Street Fighter’, trying to be more of a casual fighting game with the goal of having a good time.

Who knows. At the moment, NetherRealm has already confirmed that there are a few DLCs still to come, and they’re actively supporting the community. Assuming, you know, that there still is a community by the end of the year.
