‘Mortal Kombat’ was born in 1992 with the intention of competing with ‘Street Fighter II’. So they didn’t set any rules, simply creating an imaginative and brutal game where anything was allowed. All you have to do is look at the number of players registered to compete in the game at EVO, the largest fighting-game tournament in the world. And while ‘Street Fighter 6’ will have a macro-tournament of 5,265 people and ‘Tekken 8’ will have 4,646, ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ will have to settle… for 645 aspirants. In fact, this number is surpassed by games like ‘Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike’. That must hurt.

But the pain doesn’t come only from the professional scene: On Steam, only half as many people are playing Mortal Kombat 1 as ‘Mortal Kombat 11’, the previous game in the series, and everything seems to suggest that after less than a year, this new creation by NetherRealm and Warner is already doomed. But it’s not that simple, considering that the competitive variant of ‘Mortal Kombat’ has always been anecdotal. It’s a banned game in Japan, and most players of the series prefer consoles over PC.

We don’t have exact numbers or evidence of the damage, but it’s true that many of the new mechanics have not convinced regular gamers, such as the famous Kameos (characters that provide assistance to the main character with attacks). Or maybe it’s just that we’re not quite seeing the big picture: ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ hasn’t wanted to focus on the elitism of combat in the style of ‘Street Fighter’, trying to be more of a casual fighting game with the goal of having a good time.

One of the characters that excited fans the most was Homelander, the superhero (if you can call him that) from the successful television series on Amazon Prime Video that adapts the comic book The Boys.

Today, NetherRealm has finally provided us with images of Homelander in action in a brief video presentation of the upcoming DLC. The trailer begins with Homelander drinking his favorite drink, whole milk, before facing off against one of the original Mortal Kombat characters, Liu Kang. The rest of the trailer shows some of Homelander’s fatalities in the game, which we won’t reveal here.

With a little luck, we may be able to see Homelander in actual gameplay footage at some point in the future. This new trailer briefly showcases a MK character, Ferra, who will likely be released as a new “Kameo fighter” alongside Homelander.

The trailer does not reveal when Homelander will be added to the list of playable fighters in Mortal Kombat 1. However, since the fourth season of The Boys is scheduled to premiere on June 13th on Amazon Prime Video, we would bet that he will be introduced on or around that date.

The only bad news about this revelation is that it seems that actor Antony Starr, who plays Homelander in the TV series The Boys, will not provide the voice for the character in his appearance in Mortal Kombat 1, as Starr commented months ago on social media. Starr has not revealed his reasons for not voicing the character in the game.

According to Boon’s comment on a Twitter thread, the name Ermac comes from an error in the first Mortal Kombat. Ermac is an abbreviation for Error Macro, a list of every error in the code that was found in the arcade machine while it was in use. In the case of the Mortal Kombat arcade, Ermac appeared after each game listed after Reptile, a hidden character within the game. This made many players think that, like Reptile, there was a character named Ermac that had yet to be discovered.

Although NetherRealm Studios was aware that fans believed there was a secret character, they did not introduce it immediately. It wasn’t until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 that they included Ermac, even though many players insisted for years that they had fought against the character in previous versions of the game. Something impossible, since Ermac did not exist until that moment.

This is not something that only happened in Mortal Kombat. In Street Fighter II, something similar happened as well, because, due to a translation error, Ryu said among his victory phrases that “You must defeat Shen Long to stand a chance.” This made many players think that there was a character named Shen Long, but in reality it was a bad translation of shoryuken.
