Square Enix announces a new Nier, but fans are suspicious

Square Enix has surprised the gaming community with the announcement of a new project, titled Nier: Cosmic Horror, made at midnight on April 1st, a day famous for April Fools’ jokes. This has raised doubts about the veracity of the announcement, as many fans of the Nier series are divided; some believe it is a joke, while others hold out hope for a possible new horror game within the successful franchise.

It’s an April Fool’s Day that hasn’t been very funny

The viral message, which includes an intriguing video featuring a robotic creature with a tentacle head and the iconic face of Emil’s mask, raises both existential and thematic questions: Born from nothing, is it hope? Or is it despair in the name of salvation?. This has led to speculation about the content and direction of the game.

The creator of Nier, Yoko Taro, has recently been in contact with The Weeknd, who has expressed his admiration for the series. Social media has exploded with conversations about this collaboration, which could elevate the franchise’s profile even further. While this social uproar continues, Yoko Taro has also remained active in his posts, sharing trivial moments from his daily life, which contrasts with the expectation and tension surrounding Nier: Cosmic Horror.

The announcement comes at a crucial time, as Nier: Automata has sold over 10 million copies, suggesting that fans may have reasons to be optimistic. However, due to the nature of the announcement and the context of its release, many are wondering if it is truly a new chapter in the saga or simply a marketing strategy disguised as a joke.

Yoko Taro has not been partying, it's just that Square Enix has canceled several projects for him

Yoko Taro, the acclaimed creator of the NieR series, has been working on multiple projects since 2023, although many of them have been canceled, leading to the perception among fans that he is not active in the industry. In his recent statements at the South Korean event G-CON 2025, Taro demystified this idea, explaining that, despite being compensated for his work, the lack of releases leads his followers to mistakenly think he is inactive. “Although I was working on it, they were not published. I get paid, so it’s not a problem for me, but since my work does not […]

Yoko Taro, the acclaimed creator of the NieR series, has been working on multiple projects since 2023, although many of them have been canceled, leading to the perception among fans that he is not active in the industry. In his recent statements at the South Korean event G-CON 2025, Taro debunked this idea, explaining that, despite being compensated for his work, the lack of releases leads his followers to mistakenly think that he is inactive. “Even though I was working on it, it wasn’t published. I get paid, so it’s not a problem for me, but since my work isn’t published, people think I’m not working,” he stated.

Doesn’t want to release anything below its standards

Taro is known for its commitment to quality, which leads it to prefer not to release games that do not meet its standards. This philosophy aligns with a broader trend in the video game industry in 2025, where there has been a notable increase in cancellations and studio closures. Renowned companies like Microsoft and Square Enix have also decided to reduce the number of releases, betting on projects that ensure excellence and avoiding the risk of publishing games that do not fully satisfy consumers.

The creator of NieR also reflected on his current situation, noting that it is preferable not to launch certain projects than to risk presenting something that does not meet his expectations. “I think it’s better not to release anything than to release something strange, so I have no negative feelings about it,” he concluded, reaffirming his dedication to quality in each of his endeavors. Despite the challenges, Taro remains committed to his art and the creation of memorable experiences for players.

Nier: Automata could have had a director from a very famous title

Nier: Automata and its predecessor, Nier: Replicant, have been hailed as true gems of the action RPG genre, reaching sales of nearly 10 million units worldwide. Nier: Automata and its predecessor, Nier: Replicant, have been hailed as true gems of the action RPG genre, reaching sales of nearly 10 million units worldwide. However, this success did not come without a crucial decision made by producer Yosuke Saito: choosing director Yoko Taro instead of the director of a famous title, whose identity has not been revealed.

Yoko Taro was the game director due to Saiyto’s conviction

During a recent interview with Famitsu, Saito reflected on the beginning of the Nier franchise, which they originally considered as an “experimental project.” It was this boldness that, according to him, allowed the series to become what it is today. In this context, it is interesting to think about how the industry would have been if Saito had opted for the other game. However, Taro’s choice has not been overshadowed, as Nier: Automata has been credited with the recovery of the Japanese video game industry, even by former PlayStation head, Shuhei Yoshida.

Apart from Nier, director Yoko Taro also proposed a side-scrolling game titled Echo, which never came to fruition. Saito revealed that he asked Taro to reconsider this idea. While it remains a mystery what “Echo” could have offered, it seems that both made a wise choice by focusing on the deeper stories that have characterized the Nier series.

Regarding the future of the franchise, Saito has indicated that “nothing has changed” regarding the new Nier title, which could pave the way for a potential Nier 3, with an announcement expected in 2027, as long as everyone “stays alive until then.” This statement has generated speculation among the fan community, who are eager for the continuation of a story that has left an indelible mark on the world of video games.

The biggest influence of NieR and Nier Automata? Neon Genesis Evangelion

Yoko Taro, the renowned director of the Nier series, has revealed in a recent interview with Square Enix that his work has been heavily influenced by the iconic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Taro has reiterated that his acclaimed video game saga, composed of Nier and Nier: Automata, is “practically a reimagining” of the themes and narratives presented in Hideaki Anno’s work. Yoko Taro, the renowned director of the Nier series, has revealed in a recent interview with Square Enix that his work has been heavily influenced by the iconic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Taro has reiterated that his acclaimed video game saga, consisting of Nier and Nier: Automata, is “practically a reimagining” of the themes and narratives presented in Hideaki Anno’s work. This connection between the works highlights the lasting impact that Evangelion has had on entertainment culture and on the way developers create complex stories that affect players.

Yoko Taro does not hide in everything that drinks from anime

In Nier, Taro set the narrative in a world where humans have disappeared, which led him to explore a plot that does not involve humanity, a creative decision that reflects his own insecurities and visions about existence. In his own words, although he feels satisfied with his work, he has also confessed that “perhaps I shouldn’t have annihilated humans so easily”. This reflection suggests a deep introspection about the direction of his stories and the emotional connection they can establish with players.

Additionally, Taro expressed his concern about the future of the video game industry in light of the advancement of artificial intelligence, suggesting that developers could lose their jobs and be considered “like bards” in the future. However, his comments were accompanied by a note of skepticism, as other creators, such as Kazutaka Kodaka from Danganronpa, argue that AI still cannot replicate the genuine creativity of a human being.

With his revelations, Taro not only sheds light on the creative process behind Nier, but also raises profound questions about the future direction of narrative in video games and the role of technology in art.

Yoko Taro claims that Nier Automata has 26 endings because Square Enix wanted more content

Since its release, Nier Automata has captured the attention of players and critics for its innovative narrative and complex gameplay. One of the most notable elements of the game is its impressive number of endings, which totals 26. This approach, reminiscent of the philosophy of its predecessor Drakengard, was driven by the intervention of Square Enix, which requested PlatinumGames to add more content to the title. Since its release, Nier Automata has captured the attention of players and critics for its innovative narrative and complex gameplay. One of the standout elements of the game is its impressive number of endings, which totals 26. This approach, reminiscent of the philosophy of its predecessor Drakengard, was driven by the intervention of Square Enix, which requested PlatinumGames to add more content to the title. According to director Yoko Taro, this requirement arose in response to the need to make the game more appealing in a competitive market.

Yoko Taro blames Square Enix for the craziness of Nier Automata

During a recent interview on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the series, Taro revealed how, initially, Nier Automata contained fewer endings, but the development team was instructed to expand the player experience, resulting in the rich variety of outcomes found in the game. This decision not only enriches the narrative but also extends gameplay time, offering players various forms of interaction and rewards.

However, Taro also shared more serious concerns in recent interviews, expressing his worry about the impact of artificial intelligence on the video game development industry. The creator warned that, in the near future, developers could face the threat of losing their jobs due to automation, suggesting that they could be displaced and treated like minstrels in a context where human creativity is underestimated in favor of machines.

On the other hand, the head of PlayStation has praised Nier Automata as a savior of Japanese games in the international landscape. Despite this recognition, Taro was urged to focus on the Japanese market, reflecting the ongoing challenge of balancing local creativity with the demands of the global market.

NieR Automata is one of the most surprising games of recent years. Released in 2017, it catapulted its creator, Yoko Taro, to stardom, and since then he hasn’t released any other major game. Nor has he needed to. Because NieR Automata continues to sell like hotcakes while we keep waiting for his next big title.

NieR Automata sells as if it were going to be removed from stores

Because, as announced by Square Enix, NieR: Automata has now sold over nine million units. The last figure we had was from last February, when it reached eight million units. This means it has sold one million units in just the last ten months, which is an astonishing figure for a game that was released seven years ago and whose last edition was The End of YoRHa Edition for Switch in 2022. If we don’t count its DLC with Stellar Blade.

But this should not surprise us. NieR Automata is an excellent game, with a cult following that continues to grow. And while we patiently wait for Yoko Taro to announce his next game, we might as well start another playthrough of NieR Automata. Or play it for the first time, if you never have.
