Tomonobu Itagaki, a renowned Japanese video game creator, passed away at the age of 58. His death was announced through a heartfelt message on his Facebook account, where he expressed his pride in having fought until the end, lamenting not being able to offer new games to his followers. “I am filled with sadness for not being able to provide new works to all my fans. I’m sorry,” he said in a message that resonated with the struggle of his life and career.

Tomonobu Itagaki is a video game legend

Itagaki, famous for his contributions to video game culture, was responsible for iconic franchises like Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, which helped define the action genre and the aesthetics of the early 2000s. His provocative style made him a controversial figure, but undeniably influential in the industry. Throughout his career, he stood out for his ability to challenge his competitors, establishing a friendship and rivalry with Katsuhiro Harada, creator of Tekken. Harada expressed his sadness and surprise at Itagaki’s departure, recalling shared moments and the hope for a reunion.

Despite his success at Team Ninja, Itagaki drifted away from glory after leaving the company. His last major project, Devil’s Third, for Wii U, did not achieve the expected success and was a significant blow to his career. Subsequently, Itagaki founded Valhalla Games and worked on several projects, including an NFT-based game titled Warrior, of which there is not much information available.

The departure of Tomonobu Itagaki marks the twilight of a star in the world of video games. However, his legacy will endure, as titles like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive continue to be celebrated by fans. His legacy will be honored by reviving and enjoying his masterpieces. Rest in peace, Master Itagaki.

Ninja Gaiden Ragebound has arrived with force, representing the return of a 2D installment after more than three decades. Developed in collaboration between Dotemu and Koei Tecmo, the game aims to combine classic essence with modern design that appeals to both nostalgic players and newcomers. David Jaumandreu, director and producer of the game, emphasizes that the team was inspired by the rich history of the series, including elements from the 3D titles that have been fundamental to its evolution.

Return to the origins

The title stands out for its two protagonists, Kenji and Kumori, each with unique combat styles that allow players to experience different dynamics in gameplay. This duality not only adds variety but also complements the opposing philosophies of their respective clans, Ryu Hayabusa and the Black Spider Clan. Additionally, Ragebound maintains the high difficulty reputation that characterizes the series, offering an extra hard mode designed to challenge even the most experienced players.

With more than 15 main stages and several secret missions, the focus on the quality of the levels is a pillar of Ragebound’s development. The developers decided to create a stage-based game instead of a Metroidvania to stay true to the franchise’s roots. Through careful attention to design, the team has managed to provide an experience that not only honors its predecessors but also raises today’s standards.

Jaumandreu emphasizes that the work on Ragebound has provided the team with valuable lessons, especially in areas such as animations and the quick response of movements, which will undoubtedly influence future projects. As one of the most anticipated returns, Ninja Gaiden Ragebound is set to be a milestone for fans of 2D action.

Off the Map

Alongside Project G.G., PlatinumGames has erased nine other titles from its history, including well-known works like Star Fox Zero, Babylon’s Fall, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan. This action has generated a wave of uncertainty and speculation among fans and the developer community about the company’s future direction.

A former PlatinumGames producer, JP Kellams, expressed his discontent on social media, calling the removal of the studio’s history from its website a mistake and a lack of respect towards those who worked on those projects. Kellams suggested that this decision could reveal a lack of recognition for the company’s past achievements, further fueling concerns about its future.

So far, PlatinumGames has not provided clear explanations regarding the removal of these titles, which has led many to wonder about possible strategic changes within the studio. However, the company continues with new projects, including Ninja Gaiden 4, a collaboration with Team Ninja that marks the first new title in the saga in thirteen years and was recently announced during the Xbox Developer Direct.

Konami has officially confirmed the release of Ninja Five-O, a cult classic from Game Boy Advance, for February 25 on PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC platforms. This game, originally released in 2003 and developed by Hudson Soft, has gained notable popularity in the second-hand market, with loose cartridges reaching prices of up to 300€.

It hasn’t been released at a popular price, but getting the physical game would cost you much more

The reissue of Ninja Five-O will be available at a price of €24.99, although players can take advantage of a 15% discount on Steam, which reduces the price to €21.24. For many, this fee may seem high considering that the game essentially consists of a GBA ROM presented in an emulator, but given the cost of obtaining a legitimate copy on the market, the proposed price is relatively accessible.

Ninja Five-O is defined as a fusion between Ninja Gaiden and Bionic Commando, offering a 2D action and platform experience. In this, players take on the role of a ninja police officer who fights against terrorists and unusual creatures while rescuing hostages across various levels, benefiting from mobility options like a grappling hook. Although the game was a completely Japanese production, its release was limited to North America and Europe in quite restricted quantities.

This new version includes additional features such as a time trial mode and a rewind function. However, there are still doubts about the quality of the emulation, as it is using Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine. Fans hope that this reissue lives up to the legendary reputation of Ninja Five-O, expecting the nostalgia of this title to combine with modern innovation.
