The most read mangas of the year make it clear that there is one series eternally above all the others

If you haven’t been to a comic book store in a while, you might be surprised to see that superhero comics, even with the massive success of their film adaptations, are not nearly as popular as manga. Japanese comics, aimed at men, women, and children (each with their own particular genres), have been at the top of sales charts for years, and it’s logical: their variety of genres is overwhelming, and the fact that there are no “phases” of writers and illustrators makes it easier for the casual reader to follow. But, among all of them… Which are the most successful?

¡Estamos en el crucero!

We go from less to more, always regarding the best sellers this year in Japan: in the top 10 we have My Hero Academia, which ended in August with 42 volumes behind it, followed by Spy x Family, which already has 14 volumes (and counting), in addition to having a hilarious anime adaptation. And no, none of the Folger family has yet guessed each other’s secrets, so there’s much more to come. At number 8, The Apothecary Diaries, which adapts the novel series about an herbalist who decides to help the emperor’s children (and whose life changes completely). Already at number 7, we have a classic among classics: Detective Conan. Yes, it is still ongoing, just celebrated 30 years of publication with 106 volumes to its name and the end is not yet in sight.

We move forward: at number 6 we have Demon Slayer, and the surprising thing is… It ended four years ago! Imagine how popular and iconic it must be in Japan, wow. Entering the top 5, we can’t miss Frieren, one of the big hits in manga in recent years about an elf mage who embarks on a journey to rekindle her passion for magic. Just above, at number 4, is Oshi no ko, about two people who are reborn as the twins of Ai Hoshino, a Japanese idol. So far, it has 16 volumes, with no signs of ending soon.

Finally, the top 3 is made up of three essentials: Kingdom, which has been telling ancient Chinese history in its own way since 2006; Jujutsu Kaisen, which has just ended but continues to be highly popular (with good reason, by the way) and, of course, the number 1 is… One Piece. Did anyone doubt it for a moment? Woe to anyone who tries to take the spot from Luffy and his crew! There are things that are impossible, pirates!

The ultimate One Piece video game arrives on Nintendo Switch

One Piece Odyssey arrives on Nintendo Switch with a Deluxe Edition that includes all the base DLC, proudly showcasing the exquisite art of Eiichiro Oda.

Nintendo has always suffered from being considered the home of its own games. This wouldn’t be bad if it weren’t for the fact that many companies believe that their games won’t perform as well on their consoles. That’s why many great third-party titles never make it to Nintendo consoles. Or they arrive late. Although, to make up for it, when they do arrive, they usually come in their definitive versions to compensate for the delay. Something that has happened now with the adaptation of a popular manga and anime.

The danger of the ‘One Piece’ remake is, of course, artificial intelligence

Wit Studio, which continues to be the most indie arm of Production IG, really likes to flirt with AI.

I’m going to confess something: the first episodes of ‘One Piece’, 25 years later, still hold up perfectly. And I know it firsthand because exactly a year ago I decided to finally start watching the series, one episode per day. And beyond its obvious flaws (excessive flashbacks, not in high definition, etc.), they are very entertaining. But if they want to make a remake, I certainly won’t be the one to refuse. Or maybe I will?

I will go until the end, I will pursue it

It was a surprise for everyone (including those who made the original anime, who now fear it will be lost in time): ‘One Piece’ will have a remake on Netflix, a relatively logical step after the success of its live-action series. This will be the fourth time they tell us these early stories in the East Blue, but behind it is the studio that made the first two seasons of ‘Attack on Titan’, so… Why not?

There is a very powerful reason why not: artificial intelligence. And it is that Wit Studio, which is nothing more than the most indie arm of Production IG, likes to flirt a lot with AI. In fact, they already did it in ‘Dog and Child’, a short film they also made for Netflix where the backgrounds were made this way, but not to experiment, but to save workers. Which, in the end, is the lesson that big companies are taking about the possibilities of AI, let’s not fool ourselves.

Sure, they don’t have to use this type of tools, after all. This was just an experiment and no matter how much their employees complain, maybe they will give their all for ‘The One Piece’. But there are doubts. Because in the study itself, it announces that it will use “the most innovative animation techniques”. And we all know what that can mean. Will we see Luffy animated by a robot or will it have a human touch? We’ll have to find out before we get on board.

Luffy has a pure heart: this is what the crossover between ‘One Piece’ and ‘Dragon Ball’ revealed about him

Bulma stealing with Nami, Krillin chatting with Chopper, Sanji and the Turtle Goblin fantasizing about girls, Trunks, Usopp, Vegeta and Nico Robin forming a band, Piccolo and Zoro getting lost and, of course, Luffy and Son Goku.

Years ago, there might have been small fights among fans wondering what a meeting between Goku from ‘Dragon Ball’ and Luffy from ‘One Piece‘ would be like. Luckily, they’ve crossed paths so many times over the years that they’re practically buddies. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make much sense: they’re both shonen fighters in the end, right? Well, if we believe there’s a dragon that grants wishes when you gather seven balls, we can believe that the Straw Hats can meet the Saiyans.

Stretch out your arm, Kamehameha!

The first crossover between both series was in the form of a video game: in 2005, ‘Jump Super Stars’ was released in Japan, a fighting game for Nintendo DS that featured characters from Shonen Jump magazine, including Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Arale, and the protagonists of ‘Slam Dunk’. It was a good start, but not exactly what we were looking for.

Just one year later, on December 25, 2006, Akira Toriyama and Eiichiro Oda published ‘Cross Epoch’, a one-shot manga that, after crowning Mr. Satan as king, brought together characters from both universes to interact for a while: Bulma teaming up with Nami, Krillin chatting with Chopper, Sanji and Turtle Hermit fantasizing about girls, Trunks, Usopp, Vegeta, and Nico Robin forming a band, Piccolo and Zoro getting lost, and, of course, Luffy and Son Goku.

And here is where we discover something crucial about Luffy: when he falls off a cliff, the protagonist of ‘Dragon Ball‘ helps him by sending his Flying Nimbus, on which, as we remember, only people with a pure heart can ride. The leader of ‘One Piece’ seems to have it because he holds on without any problem, and he takes the opportunity to launch a double attack against a criminal gang formed by Buggy and Pilaf: a Kamehameha mixed with a Gomu Gomu No Bazooka. As you can imagine, things don’t end well for the villains.

The episode is just a silly occurrence in another alternate timeline, but in 2013, they officially came together again, this time in the anime and including ‘Toriko’ as well: ‘Super Collaboration Special!’ consisted of one episode of ‘One Piece’ and another of, of course, ‘Toriko,’ during a race that culminates in a fight against a character named Akami, who is defeated by the combined strength of the three heroes. What were you expecting from a promotional crossover, after all?

There’s a way to know how ‘One Piece’ is going to end, but you won’t like it.

According to Eiichiro Oda, the author of the manga, we are already very close to knowing the end once and for all. What we didn’t know is that there is already someone who knew it before anyone else.

Surely you also want to know how ‘One Piece‘ ends, right? Will Luffy become the King of Pirates? Will he stop at the last minute to continue living more adventures? Will all the members of the crew get what they are looking for? According to Eiichiro Oda, the author of the manga, we are already very close to knowing the end once and for all. What we didn’t know is that there is already someone who knew it before anyone else.

Make a wish

That person in question was a boy named Hinati Fujinami who, when he learned that he had incurable lung cancer, made a wish to the Make-A-Wish foundation: to know the end of ‘One Piece’ from Oda himself. The author, of course, went to the hospital and, in tears, told him, asking him not to tell anyone. When he left, the boy was reportedly sobbing. When asked why, his response was “It’s a beautiful ending”.

You don’t have to be about to die to know the end of ‘One Piece’ ahead of time, especially since this story is notoriously false. For starters, because “Hinati” is not a Japanese name (the syllable “ti” does not exist in their language), and to continue because ten years ago, when this rumor spread, Oda probably still had no idea how it was all going to end beyond a simple outline.

There is a way to know the ending of ‘One Piece‘, of course, and not only Oda has it in his head: the main editors of the series know his plans perfectly well, and maybe his assistants too. And none of us are going to get there unless we have a much better than average level of Japanese, a language that, as we all know, can be learned in a couple of afternoons and is distinguished by its lightness.

Why this story has become so popular is obvious. And it’s that, deep down, we manga fans want to hold on to something: that it’s going to have an ending. Until I see it, at the moment, I don’t believe it. With or without a child dying along the way.

You can read One Piece for free… and completely legally!

Don’t worry: the time has come to solve it, without spending a fortune and without having any type of ethical problem later. Fiance.

I’m sure you’ve been hearing praises of ‘One Piece‘ here and there for years. That it’s a must-see series, that you can’t miss it, that it’s the anime, that it’s Gear 5, that it’s Zoro, that it’s… And you still don’t know anything else besides that Luffy stretches a lot and there’s a bad clown. Don’t worry: the time has come to fix it, without spending a dime and without having any ethical problems afterwards. Promise.

Everything that adapts -very loosely- the Netflix series is now available for you to enjoy right here. In total, 12 volumes that tell the story from Luffy’s first encounter with Koby to the fight against Arlong. And they are cute, because if the first volumes don’t hook you with their little adventures, the dramatic misadventure with Nami will eventually make you want to pick up the next one. And here begins the real hero’s journey: reading the more than one hundred volumes that have already been published.

And don’t think that this is one of those cases where it is available exclusively in English: you can read ‘One Piece‘ in Spanish. If you feel like learning languages, you have from English to Polish available: hey, who said that ‘One Piece’ could not be used to learn languages other than “nakama” and “mugiwara”?

Of course, if you want to buy the rest of the saga, which is now coming out in Spain in a 3 in 1 economic (but not manageable, mind you) edition, the page itself takes you to a place to buy where you can follow the adventure of the pirate band that has conquered the hearts of the otaku and has become the new cult title almost unexpectedly. Be careful, though: the problem with ‘One Piece‘ is that you won’t be able to read just a little bit and put it down. Be warned.

How much would you pay for the first chapter of ‘One Piece’? You should prepare a lot of berries

One Piece‘ has certainly become a massive hit. The success of the live-action adaptation, the trending topic created by the introduction of Gear 5 in the anime, and the incredibly massive manga sales make it clear that Luffy and his crew may not have found the ultimate treasure, but they have conquered the world. Such is the craze that collectors are starting to artificially inflate prices. In this article, you will read about astronomical figures, but always remember that the number one manga costs 1.95 euros at any store.

This is going to start

In July 1997, Shonen Jump released its 34th issue of the year. Nothing special, just the continuation of several iconic manga series like ‘Rurouni Kenshin,’ ‘I”s,’ ‘Yu-Gi-Oh,’ or ‘Captain Tsubasa’ (known as ‘Oliver and Benji’ in some regions). And among them, the first episode of a series destined to become the savior of the industry: ‘One Piece’ by Eiichiro Oda.

As you probably know, manga series are first serialized in magazines (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and then compiled into volumes that are eventually published in other countries, sometimes with a few retouched panels that, due to time constraints, don’t make it into the magazine properly. ‘One Piece‘ wasn’t an exception. The magazine sold the usual four million copies weekly, and as always, those who bought it left it forgotten in some corner because collecting those thick volumes is impossible. Time passed by.

And we’ve arrived in 2023, the moment when suddenly the Shonen Jump where Luffy began his adventures is a fetish. So much so that some have paid $1,300 or more on eBay for a perfectly preserved magazine. And as a bonus, they get the Shonen Jump Issue 0, which included the first chapter in English. These aren’t the only crazy numbers for ‘One Piece’.

People in the United States have a lot of money and don’t know how to spend it. That’s the only possible explanation for the first English edition of the manga, in a volume format, selling for $199.99, a ridiculously high amount. Everything points to the price increasing, as with Pokémon cards, and in a few years, we’ll see volume ones of the manga selling for thousands of dollars. Just in case, hold onto yours. You might have the real One Piece in your hands.

Who is Pandaman, the most elusive character in ‘One Piece’?

Originally, Eiichiro Oda created the character many years before even dreaming of becoming a mangaka, to participate in a character design contest for the series ‘Musculman’

With the release of ‘One Piece’ on Netflix, many have embarked on reading and watching the adventures of Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and the crew as they navigate the treacherous waters of the Grand Line. But there’s a character created in the style of ‘Where’s Waldo?’ by Oda, who first appeared in Chapter 44 of the manga and has been continuously appearing since then, always in the background and with a changing personality: Don’t you know Pandaman?

Netflix DOWNLOAD

Where is Pandaman?

Originally, Eiichiro Oda created the character many years before even dreaming of becoming a mangaka to participate in a character design contest for the series ‘Musculman’ (known as ‘Kinnikuman’ to fans of the original version). Oda has usually jokingly answered all the questions about this enigmatic character, a man with a panda head who was at the Baratie and has been following the Straw Hats ever since.

Even after the time skip, he’s always hidden among the crowd or appearing behind a tree, a tradition that has also made its way into the anime. You have to have a keen eye to spot him, but when you do, it’s quite satisfying. This cameo status has only been broken on two occasions: in the video game ‘Grand Battle!’ where he’s one of the fighters, and in a special episode of the anime.

an,one

It’s pure filler, and if you’re only interested in the canon, you can skip it. However, in the fourth special episode set in the Edo period, Pandaman is known as Pop and ends up crossing paths with the pirate clown Buggy himself. In fact, in the anime, once his appearances became popular, he even had his own bounty: 3,333,333 berries.

And, of course, he makes his appearance in the Netflix series, albeit in a very peculiar way: he’s one of the shrubs in Kaya’s house, next to the well where one of the characters is thrown to their fate. Will Pandaman be a crucial character at some point in the saga? Will it be revealed that he actually held the key to the One Piece all this time? Honestly, I won’t deceive you: it doesn’t seem likely.
