Google updates the Pixel twice after creating connectivity issues in the first patch

Google, the well-known technology company that has countless business areas within the wide niche that this space has, has been forced to update the Pixel system twice after the first update, a security patch that was released this April, caused connectivity issues to users who updated their smartphone. With the second update, however, these problems apparently seem to be solved.

It may not be the most common thing within system updates, because nowadays they go through numerous controls and tests before being finally released to the community. However, there may be occasions when not so common failures are not detected until there are millions of users using that updated version.

A patch for another patch

As 9to5google has revealed, the Californian company has been forced to quickly release a new patch for the Pixel mobile software, as the latest security update, released this same April, caused phone coverage to fail, preventing normal call and message reception.

With this patch, this problem has been fixed, while also maintaining the security improvements that have been implemented in Google’s smartphone software. Thus, in this way, the Pixel will once again have a necessary update while other useful innovations are being developed for its operating system.

Reorganization of Pixel and other departments

Google is going through profound changes in recent times. In fact, the thousands of layoffs that the company carried out at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 are still fresh in memory, admitting that, in the future, more layoffs could occur. Google has done all this in an attempt to maximize profits, even though the company was far from losing money, as it is one of the richest, most powerful, and influential technology companies in the world.

With these layoffs, in addition, numerous redesigns have been made in the organization of the company’s departments, which are very numerous as they currently have dozens of open commercial areas. In fact, the Pixel department, hardware, and others are being merged into a “super department” in which they want to encompass many products and services with the supposed objective of “streamlining internal bureaucracy” or “facilitating decision-making and creating synergies”, among some of the company’s top priorities.

All this is what Google wanted to do with its Pixel phones… and never did

It has been discovered that the Pixel 8 was going to bring even more new features than what was finally included.

Did you know that the new Pixel 8 and 8 Pro were going to be able to record video in 8K? Google’s new flagships were unveiled last October 4 through its “Made By Google” event and have managed to win over the public. Although much of their appeal lies in software features such as Magic Editor, it has been discovered that the Pixel 8 was going to bring even more new features than were finally included.

Google has published the source code of the Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2 and the community has set to work to examine it thoroughly. Specifically, it has been Kamila Wojciechowska and Mishaal Rahman, two of the most prominent Android “detectives”, who have publicly exposed hidden features and curiosities that were not announced at the Google event.

No desktop mode or 8K recording

We know that one of the productivity features that Google ended up scrapping was desktop mode. Last June, Kamila revealed that the new Pixel 8s would support DisplayPort via USB-C connection. Thanks to this, we would have been able to connect the device to an external monitor and enjoy an experience similar to the one provided by Samsung Dex, Samsung’s desktop mode.

But, as we can see on the Pixel 8, this feature didn’t make the cut. This is certainly something strange, especially when its direct competitor, the iPhone 15, is able to duplicate its display when connected to another monitor. It remains to be seen if future mods or updates could “bring back” this feature to the Pixel.

Another section that was affected by the cuts was the camera. When the camera specifications of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were leaked, it was said that the sensor would be able to record video in 8K at 30 FPS. However, it was already warned that this feature “might not reach users” and finally, that is what has ended up happening. At the moment, the Pixel can only record up to 4K at 60 FPS. One of the causes of this discard would have been the software, which was not yet ready for it. Also, Google has not abandoned its goal of reaching 8K and are working on it to include it in future generations of the Pixel.

As for slow motion, Google planned to enable the possibility of capturing scenes at 480 FPS in 720p. The company quickly discarded the idea and they were left with what we have now, recordings at 240 FPS in 1080p quality.
