Resident Evil: Requiem is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and with its release just around the corner, many players are looking to refresh their memory with the latest installment of the saga, Resident Evil Village, recently available on PlayStation Plus. This direct sequel to Resident Evil 7 follows the story of Ethan Winters, who, after rescuing his wife from the Baker family, finds himself caught in a new nightmare when his wife is murdered and his daughter is kidnapped by a mysterious group led by Chris Redfield.
Revving up
In this new adventure, Ethan embarks on a quest to find his daughter and faces a sinister variety of creatures and enemies in a terrifying village. Resident Evil Village combines the classic tension of the early titles in the series with more exaggerated action elements, maintaining the first-person perspective that allows players to immerse themselves in the horror. Although it is less terrifying than its predecessor, Village offers memorable sections that have resonated with players, such as the iconic encounter with Lady Dimitrescu and the chilling challenges presented by Donna Beneviento.
The game stands out for its cast of memorable bosses, each contributing their own unique style of horror. From the intimidating presence of Lady Dimitrescu to the innovative mechanics of Donna Beneviento, each encounter offers a diverse and enriching experience. With a more abundant arsenal than in Resident Evil 7, Ethan appears as a more capable protagonist, making it easier for new players to access the saga.
Resident Evil: Requiem will not have direct links to Village, but the atmosphere and tone of the latter can serve as an excellent prelude to what fans can expect in their return to Raccoon City next month. Undoubtedly, Resident Evil Village is a sum that many were looking forward to in the PlayStation Plus catalog and a survival horror experience worth exploring before the release of the new installment.
If you have played Resident Evil 7, you will know that the game completely breaks with everything we thought about the saga up to that point. Not only did it transform into a first-person adventure, but it also took place in an unusual setting: just a couple of houses filled with rooms that you had to go back and forth between, finding keys and facing monsters along the way. What is not so well known is that, for inspiration, the creators watched the same movie over and over again, perhaps the best that has ever been made in the haunted house genre […]
If you have played Resident Evil 7, you will know that the game completely breaks with everything we thought about the saga up to that point. Not only did it transform into a first-person adventure, but it also took place in an unusual setting: just a couple of houses filled with rooms that you had to go back and forth through, finding keys and facing monsters along the way. What is not so well known is that, to find inspiration, the creators watched the same movie over and over again, perhaps the best ever made in the haunted house genre: an absolute masterpiece known as Evil Dead.
Like Lovecraft
In 1981, Sam Raimi was still an unknown. Before being glorified by several generations and directing the famous early adaptations of Spider-man, the director raised just $375,000 through various donations, enough to shoot the movie of his dreams alongside one of his best friends, Bruce Campbell. And what was this movie? Well, at the same time a pastiche of HP Lovecraft’s stories and a remake of a short they had filmed in Super-8 titled Within The Woods. Raimi had just turned 20, and he didn’t know he was about to direct one of the films that would influence horror like never before.
In fact, most of the crew were friends and family of the director lending a hand and doing him a favor. Somehow, they managed to create the incredible special effects using only latex masks, glass contact lenses (which could only be worn for 15 minutes if they didn’t want to lose their eyes) and using a special component for the fake blood that made it even more realistic: coffee. The result was amazing: no one really knew what they were doing, and much of that punk inexperience ended up filtering through the frames of the film: the crew slept in the same cabin in the woods, all together and huddled, which led to great friendships and also to major confrontations, injuries, and medical issues: everything could have gone down the drain very quickly but, somehow, it didn’t. And it succeeded. Oh boy, did it succeed.
The premiere of the movie took place in Detroit, at the Redford Theatre, and Raimi thought it would be a great idea to copy the techniques of old cinema to attract people, placing ambulances at the door for the faint of heart. They weren’t needed: thousands of people wanted to see it, and then they began to believe that perhaps they could even refund the money to those who had spent it. Refund it? After the festival went through Cannes and captivated the one and only Stephen King, everyone wanted to see for themselves what it was all about: it multiplied its budget eightfold just at the U.S. box office, and it is believed to have grossed over 27 million worldwide (although there are many, many doubts about this).
Infernal Possession went down in history immediately, with that final shot imitated a thousand times, its protagonist with a blood-stained face and its plot that, from that moment on, would be copied to excess. In fact, Raimi could later make a remake with a bigger budget (which actually also served as a sequel), Evil Dead II, and a much crazier third installment, including time travel, titled Army of Darkness. Moreover: years later, Campbell and Raimi reunited once again to continue the story in a television series titled Ash vs the Evil Dead, chainsaw in hand (literally). Groovy!
It’s no surprise that the creators of Resident Evil 7 watched Evil Dead non-stop, to the point of leaving several nods within the game: if you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out on a masterpiece. If you have seen it, you’ve surely insisted to your friends about why they should get on it. In any case, it’s a true marvel that you can’t overlook no matter how much you think it’s “old.” Are you ready to have fun while being scared?
A list of those anti-gourmet dishes that we have been living with for more than 40 years.
It all starts with Pac-man. Always, in general, every time you’re going to talk about the history of video games, there’s always a connection with the yellow ball eating pills and chased by ghosts. In this case, it’s the first game in history where gastronomy has some kind of importance. Okay, yes, eating yellow circles may not be the most foodie thing in the world, but at that time it was what there was. In fact, it’s not that different from the candies in Candy Crush, which is still played now.
But video games have also shown questionable quality food that, frankly, we do not recommend approaching. We are going to make a list of those anti-gourmet dishes that we have been living with for over 40 years. Get ready to lose your appetite.
We understand. You’re at war, your health is low, and anything can regenerate you, but no matter how hungry you are, dog food may not be the best solution. Or maybe it is! It all depends on whether David Muñoz and company decide it’s a great idea to cut costs with a high-end protein product…
4-Flour (‘Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia’)
There are plenty of options when it comes to eating, from fruit to chocolate, meat, stew, or curry rice. Well, some members of your team in this installment of ‘Fire Emblem’ have marked flour as their favorite food… Yes, not bread or pizza: raw flour. Have you ever tried it out of curiosity? Spoiler: it’s disgusting.
3-Trout-flavored yogurt (‘Earthbound’)
It’s a joke, yes, but that doesn’t stop us from feeling nauseous at the idea of someone wishing for Danone to start adding trout flavor to your trusted yogurt. It is also true that they also offer delicious pork-flavored gelatin throughout your game. Please, someone go give the developers a stomach wash.
2-Tomato Pie (‘Final Fantasy XV’)
One thing is the Catalan pa amb tomàquet that we all love, respect and enjoy (and that in the rest of Spain is known as “pan tumaca” to annoy those who visit from Barcelona)… And another this cake made of fresh tomato and served with two cherry tomatoes on the side. In fact, fans who have tried to make it in real life have said that it tastes absolutely disgusting. The empirical evidence was not necessary, honestly.
1-Marguerite Baker’s Food (‘Resident Evil 7’)
Logically, eating human remains had to be in the top 1. But, in addition, they are not prepared with any taste or seem remotely appetizing: Marguerite Baker’s food in ‘Resident Evil 7‘ is simply disgusting at all levels, one of those moments when you just want everything to end as soon as possible to go to bed, cry, and never eat again for twenty days.
