Lollipop Chainsaw RePop comes with the best possible news—no censorship

September is a month full of video games. Surprisingly, among these, two are remasters of Suda51 video games: Shadows of the Damned Hella Remastered and Lollipop Chainsaw RePop. Although the former has taken most of the spotlight, being made by its original developers, Lollipop Chainsaw RePop has finally given us reasons to be interested in it. Because less than ten days before its release, they have confirmed something important: it will be extremely faithful to the original experience.

According to Yoshimi Yasuda, the game’s producer, the Original Mode of Lollipop Chainsaw Remaster will allow players to experience the game as it was initially conceived in 2012. This means that the gore, the direction of the scenes, the character design, the comic book-style introductions, the achievements, and everything we remember from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions will be preserved. The changes will only be made in the RePop mode, which will turn the game into a less violent and more pop version, with which they seek to create their own vision of the original game.

At the same time, they also want to clarify that this does not mean that there are no changes compared to the original versions. The image quality, FPS, and resolution have also been added, as well as adjustments to the combo systems, the store, the items, and the possibility of automating QTEs. This is considered important, given that it is a remaster and that it is considered not to change the original spirit of the work.

In addition, several bugs present in the original game have also been polished. Therefore, when talking about the game not being censored, they refer to two possible senses: that it is not a cut version of the original in terms of content and that there is no institutional censorship on the content they can show. This second one is somewhat surprising, especially regarding Japan and Germany, since the levels of gore in the original game can be, even if comical, quite scandalous.

A legendary video game director has secretly opened a new studio

What Shinji Mikami, the director of legendary games like Resident Evil, Vanquish or The Evil Within, was doing, was the best-kept secret in the industry. Grasshoper Manufacture, the company of Goichi Suda, better known by the nickname Suda51, has announced that they will release a new game this year, Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered. This is a remaster of the homonymous game directed by Suda and produced by Mikami which, in the information about those involved, has revealed what no one knew until now: where the famous Japanese creative is.

Thus, through the Grasshoper Manufacture website, we can learn that Shinji Mikami “after leaving Tango Gameworks, founded KAMUY Inc.”. Something that Gematsu has confirmed is a company based in Tokyo, registered on October 5, 2023.

Although nothing else is known about the company or Mikami’s next project, who said he wanted to make at least one more game before retiring, this confirms that he is still in the industry and developing something. Japan is no different in that sense. They also make their New Year’s resolutions, even when we talk about Japanese creators in the video game industry. The difference is that they don’t just do it privately. Because the 4gamer magazine takes care of collecting every year the comments of dozens of Japanese creatives about what they have enjoyed the most in 2023 and what they expect for 2024. Including their own projects. And this year, more than one has let slip some exciting information.

Eiji Ishida, who works at Atlus and is particularly known for being the mastermind behind the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei franchise, has hinted that they are already working on a new game. Something that Suda51 has also done, stating that they are working on another game in addition to Shadows of the Damned Remastered, which will be released in 2024. And Kotaro Uchikoshi, creator of AI: The Somnium Files and the Zero Escape trilogy, true to his style, has declared that he is making a very crazy game that will go down in history.

They are not the only ones working hard. On the other hand, we have Hiroyuki Kobayashi. You may not recognize his name or his studio, GPTRACK50, but he has been involved in major Capcom franchises such as Dragon’s Dogma, Resident Evil, and Devil May Cry. And he has confirmed that he is working on an action RPG as only possible with the team he has assembled. Similarly, Yukinori Kitajima, from Synthese, a studio that has written scripts for games like Final Fantasy, has confirmed that a very ambitious title that he has been wanting to talk about for a long time will finally be announced this year.

To top it off, another great news is something we were expecting, but that doesn’t make us any less happy. Keiichiro Toyama, from Bokeh Game Studio, has confirmed that they will start showcasing their first game, Slitterhead, in 2024. This is huge news, considering that the game has former creators of Silent Hill and Siren among its ranks.

All of this promises us a 2024 full of surprises, if expectations are met. So we will have to be aware of everything these developers do, because it seems that we have some very good years ahead in the Japanese video game.
