PayPal has announced the launch of PayPal Links, a new peer-to-peer (P2P) payment request method that will initially be available for consumers in the U.S. and will expand to markets like the UK and Italy later this month. This new system allows users to make money transfers easily through text, chat, direct messages, or email, thus facilitating cross-border transactions.
They want to gradually extend this new payment model
With the aim of strengthening its position in the competitive digital payments market, PayPal is implementing this service as part of its broader initiative, PayPal World, launched in July. This platform seeks to integrate the main payment systems and digital wallets into a centralized ecosystem, emphasizing interoperability. This means that international users can use the new link method to make hassle-free transfers.
The importance of this novelty lies in PayPal’s desire to reestablish itself as a comprehensive payment solution, amid the increasingly intense competition from services like Apple Cash and Stripe, which already offer messaging payment options. With the PayPal Everywhere marketing campaign, the company hopes to increase its visibility and attract both consumers and merchants.
PayPal’s acquisition of Venmo in the past had led the company to prioritize brand growth in the P2P payment space in the U.S. However, this new focus on PayPal links raises the possibility that the company is trying to redefine its image as an “all-in-one” financial app, beyond its perception as a simple payment method centered on e-commerce.
