Volkswagen has officially announced its plans to release the ID.1, its smallest and most affordable electric vehicle (EV), with an estimated starting price of around $22,000 (20,000 euros).
The eagerly anticipated model is slated to hit the market in 2027, and it aims to become VW’s most popular offering in the compact EV segment.
Unveiled as part of Volkswagen’s strategy to create a lineup of accessible electric vehicles, the ID.1 will be positioned below the upcoming ID.2all. Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, referred to the ID.1 as the “last piece of the puzzle” in the company’s effort to capture a broader audience in the volume EV market.
Volkswagen Partners with Rivian for Cutting-Edge Tech in Affordable ID.1 EV
What sets the ID.1 apart is its incorporation of advanced software technology co-developed with the American EV startup Rivian. This collaboration, valued at up to $5.8 billion, will enable the ID.1 to be the first model utilizing Volkswagen’s new software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture. This technology promises over-the-air (OTA) updates and the addition of new functionalities over the lifespan of the vehicle.
The compact ID.1, measuring 3,880 mm in length, is designed to be user-friendly and efficient. It is expected to offer a driving range of at least 250 km (155 miles) under the WLTP cycle, suitable for urban commuting.
Additionally, the vehicle will showcase a modern interior designed for smart storage and advanced tech integrations, riding on Volkswagen’s updated front-wheel-drive MEB platform.
While the ID.1 is set for a 2027 release, it will follow other anticipated models, including the production version of the ID.2 and an SUV variant. However, it has been noted that the ID.1 is not expected to launch in the U.S. market, raising questions about its potential accessibility for American consumers. As interest in budget-friendly EVs grows, the potential impact of the ID.1 could be significant, particularly in European markets.
