A Picture is Worth a Thousand Taps: How to Snap Photos with Your Apple Watch and iPhone

Easy, efficient and something that makes a very substantial difference in some photos.

The integration between the Apple Watch and the iPhone allows us to go far beyond simply receiving notifications. One of the many uses we can give our watch in conjunction with our iPhone is to take pictures. We open the corresponding app and we can see the framing, adjust the exposure and focus, set timers, activate or deactivate the flash and, when the time is right, capture an image with a simple tap on our wrist. Let’s take a look at the options available to us and how to use them.

All the options of the camera app on your wrist

All the steps we want to do with the camera of our iPhone from the Apple Watch will be done in the Camera Control app that we will find in our watch. To use it is necessary that the iPhone and Apple Watch are close enough to communicate, although the range should be at least 20 meters in open field. Taking a picture from our Apple Watch is just two steps:

  1. We open the Camera Control app on our Apple Watch.
  2. Tap the center button.

After the capture we can touch the small thumbnail at the bottom left to see how it has been, just as we would do on our iPhone, from where we can then transfer the photos to a computer and do some cleaning. And, if we deem it appropriate, repeat the shot after returning to the live viewer by tapping Close. Within the same viewer there are several interesting options. For example, the possibility of touching any part of the screen to focus on that section or turning the digital crown to apply zoom and, if necessary, switch between lenses (0.5x, 1x and 2x).

In addition to the options found in the viewfinder section, there are also those found in the menu. This menu is accessed by touching the three-dot button at the bottom right. Here we find the option to activate or deactivate a three-second timer; choose between the Front or Rear camera; activate, deactivate the flash or set it to automatic; activate, deactivate the Live Photo or set it to automatic; and activate or deactivate the HDR mode.

Once we have configured the options we can simply return to the viewfinder by tapping OK and shoot the capture. A system with which we can take videos, slow motion or TimeLapse videos and portraits. We simply switch modes on our iPhone, swiping left or right as we would normally do. Once we have selected the mode we want to use we open the app on the Apple Watch and proceed to capture. Easy, efficient and something that makes a very substantial difference in some photos.
