Surprisingly, Lara Croft has never had her own anime or animated series. Even when she was at the height of her popularity and was one of the most recognizable characters in the industry, no one did anything with her outside of the medium. A wasted potential, considering all the potential of ‘Tomb Raider’ for a series.
That’s why, if you’ve always wondered what an animated series of ‘Tomb Raider’ would be like, you don’t have to wonder anymore. Netflix has announced that they are working on ‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,’ the character’s first anime. Working on it is the team from Powerhouse Animation, who have already made the Castlevania and Master of the Universe: Revelation series for Netflix—so we can expect quality work.
The series will take place after the events of ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider,’ the third and final chapter of the Crystal Dynamics reboot. According to the Netflix synopsis, Lara Croft must return home after someone has stolen a powerful Chinese artifact from Croft Manor. This will lead her to confront her true self, being forced to decide what kind of heroine she wants to be.
All of this happens during the rebirth of Lara Croft as a character—and as ‘Tomb Raider’ as a franchise. Something evident considering that Amazon is working on its own ‘Tomb Raider’ series, this time live-action, with the help of screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who previously worked on Indiana Jones. Similarly, Amazon will also be in charge of publishing the new installment of ‘Tomb Raider,’ produced by Crystal Dynamics, which will run on Unreal Engine 5.
‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’ will premiere on Netflix on October 10th. And while we still have some time before we can watch it, we can take comfort in the fact that it will be released before anything Amazon is preparing.
