Revisiting an Anime Classic: Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of a Timeless Masterpiece

Studio Pierrot’s masterpiece turns twenty and they decide to celebrate it with four new episodes, and maybe something else yet to be announced?

If there’s one legendary anime for an entire generation, it’s Naruto. Serving as an introduction to anime for many people, Naruto holds the same significance for a generation as One Piece or Dragon Ball did for another. That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many people feel a special affection for one of the most famous manga ninjas. It’s also challenging to imagine a world where we can forget about him or his famous, albeit with ups and downs, anime. That’s why, now that Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the original manga, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the anime’s premiere, we can expect some form of celebration. And that’s exactly what will happen.

During the Anime Expo held in Los Angeles last weekend, it was confirmed that the classic Naruto series will have four new episodes. Although no specific details about their content were provided, it is expected to be completely new material, never before adapted into anime. What we do have is a release date: the first episode will premiere on September 3rd in Japan. While there is no information yet about an international release or the streaming platforms that will broadcast it, we can anticipate learning more in the coming weeks, as the premiere date draws near.

The most surprising thing of all is that there is still no news about a new season of its sequel, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. It has been airing since 2017, with its latest episode to date airing on March 26th. It is expected that we will receive more news about the future of Boruto at some point after the release of the new Naruto episodes. Especially considering that the Boruto manga is still ongoing and doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon.

Because of that, if there ever was a perfect time to bring back Naruto with a bang, it is now. Boruto is successful, people want to see Naruto again, and undoubtedly, the four episodes will reignite interest in the character. Announcing a new movie or a remake of the original series would be a wise decision and would align perfectly with the celebration of the 20th anniversary, which so far hasn’t shown much in terms of celebrations. However, these are just speculations. The only confirmed thing at the moment are those four episodes, which will be coming soon, but we still don’t even know exactly what they will be about.
