There are plenty of science fiction movies about alien invasions, and they come in all styles, from Tim Burton’s craziest vision with Mars Attacks! to the American epic of Independence Day. However, few have managed to reach the audience in recent years as well as Edge of Tomorrow, a hit movie starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt that is still talked about today.
Available on the streaming platform Max, Edge of Tomorrow is based on the Japanese light novel All You Need is Kill, written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Later adapted into a manga illustrated by Takeshi Obata, known for his work on series like Death Note and Bakuman, it is undoubtedly one of the best works of the genre in recent decades. And the movie proved it.
All you need is to die
Directed by Doug Liman, this science fiction and action film takes us to Earth in the near future, at the moment when the Mimics, a relentless alien species, begin to invade the planet. Major William Cage, an inexperienced combat officer, is sent to fight in a suicide mission. But during the battle, Cage kills an Alpha Mimic and dies covered in its blood, which makes him relive the same day over and over again every time he dies. Groundhog Day but with aliens, in short.
With each repetition of the day, Cage becomes a more skilled soldier and learns more about the Mimics. He joins forces with veteran warrior Rita Vrataski, portrayed by Emily Blunt, who has also experienced the time loop before. Together, they try to find a way to defeat the Mimics and end the time cycle.
Starring Cruise and Blunt, the movie is so good that a sequel has been talked about ever since its release. However, for now, nothing has been said, and it doesn’t seem like there will be any news about it in the future. Nevertheless, the movie is worth watching, like its premise, over and over again.
