The Winds of Winter wait is now longer than Game of Thrones’ run

George R.R. Martin has hit another Winds of Winter delay marker, and this one’s hard to ignore. Going by the publication dates alone, the wait since 2011’s A Dance with Dragons is now longer than the full stretch from 1996’s A Game of Thrones through book five.

So yes, readers have now spent more time waiting for book six than they spent getting the first five books put together. Martin has said he’s been working on The Winds of Winter since around 2010, and it still has no release date. After that, A Dream of Spring is still meant to follow.

He’s also said, more than once, that The Winds of Winter is his main focus. In 2022, Martin put the book at about three-quarters done. Then, in 2025 and early 2026, he estimated it at roughly 1,100 to 1,500 manuscript pages. Even so, he’s been pretty clear that there’s still a lot left to do, partly because the book is so large, partly because all those storylines have to lock together, and partly because the cast is huge.

If you’ve been keeping up with every post and every quote, the broader picture hasn’t changed much. By Martin’s own telling, HBO work and his other projects still take up some of his time. Fans, especially in the US and UK, are split on what that means. Some would rather he take as long as he needs than force the story out too early. Others still aren’t convinced The Winds of Winter, or even A Dream of Spring, will ever be finished at all.

Right now, there’s still no release window to circle on the calendar. And after Martin pushed back on rumors that surfaced in early 2026, he says the only dates worth trusting are the ones officially announced by him and his publisher.
