One of the most anticipated titles of the year, Kingmakers, has captured the attention of over 88,000 players on Steam, despite having experienced delays in its release. Developed by Redemption Road Games, the game delves into a bold concept: transporting players 500 years back in time, armed with modern technology such as assault rifles, grenade launchers, and armored vehicles, facing medieval civilizations.
A less intense engine, but it can do more things because of that
Kingmakers offers a unique war experience, with real-time battles that can involve “tens of thousands of soldiers,” each managed by advanced artificial intelligence. Ian Fisch, the project’s technical lead, emphasizes that they have managed to develop an AI and terrain navigation that rivals the standards of AAA shooters, allowing for deep immersion in the combat.
Despite its technical ambitions, the team has chosen to use Unreal Engine 4, instead of the latest version, to ensure that the title is accessible and perfectly optimized. Fisch explains that his goal is to maintain a performance of 60 FPS on mid-range PCs, without the need for frame interpolation technologies, which could limit the game’s reach to more powerful systems. This decision involves rigorous optimization techniques to ensure that all battles are fully simulated, without resorting to prefab elements.
In addition, Kingmakers will feature a multiplayer mode for up to four players, although a new release date has not yet been confirmed. The possibility of the world continuing to operate even when a player disconnects adds a level of dynamism to the proposal.
Those interested in the game should stay tuned, as, in the absence of an updated release date, the anticipation for this innovative title continues to grow.
