Toyota is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market by announcing new alliances with prominent Chinese technology firms such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and Momenta.
The move aims to enhance the intelligence and driving capabilities of its EVs, reflecting a broader strategy dubbed “China R&D 2.0.” GAC Toyota, the automaker’s joint venture in China, outlined its intentions during its recent Tech Day event, with a clear message that “god-level allies are coming to help.”
Part of this strategy involves the development of an extensive ecosystem centered around software and intelligent driving.
Toyota’s Vision for Smart Cars: Integrating Xiaomi and Huawei Innovations
GAC Toyota introduced new electronic architectures, two energy vehicle (NEV) platforms, and three hybrid systems. Notably, the bZ3X, which has quickly become Toyota’s most affordable EV with a starting price of approximately 109,800 yuan ($15,800), received over 10,000 orders within the first hour of its launch in April.
The upcoming bZ7 electric sedan will be the first to utilize the new NEV platform and will integrate Huawei’s HarmonyOS 5.0 for a more seamless user experience, equipped with a 15.6″ infotainment screen.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Toyota plans to embed Xiaomi’s smart devices, such as speakers and wearables, into its vehicles to create a connected ecosystem between home and car.
Additionally, Toyota is partnering with Huawei and Tencent to develop a next-generation AI voice assistant expected to debut by 2028. These advancements come at a time when Toyota is experiencing growth in the Chinese market, reporting a 20% increase in sales compared to last year, with a total of 142,754 vehicles sold in April alone.
Analysts will be watching closely to see if these new partnerships can solidify Toyota’s foothold in the world’s largest EV market as the automaker readies itself for a competitive future.
