Since the existence of Spotify, users have been demanding a fee that offers lossless audio that can rival the quality of CDs and other high-fidelity formats. And Spotify has been considering the idea for years.
There has been much debate about how Spotify will exactly offer its long-awaited lossless audio support. In April it was thought that the format would be part of the Music Pro feature. Then, in May, a leak suggested that high-resolution audio would be offered through a completely new subscription plan.
Now, we learn that Spotify HiFi may not be a standalone tier as previously theorized. Instead, it will be an add-on to the standard plan. This information comes from an anonymous source that just revealed it to Bloomberg.
A service that keeps getting more expensive year after year
In a recent report, Bloomberg claims that the platform will charge users an additional $5 per month to access lossless audio.
This news comes a week after Spotify announced that it was going to increase the cost of the Premium plan in the United States to $11.99 per month. If the source is correct, you will pay $16.99 per month to enjoy a high-quality format in a single subscription.
This may come as a surprise to some because “a code discovered in September 2023” said that the company planned to launch its new HiFi tier and charge $20 for it.
The Bloomberg source has not explained why Spotify is considering this option. 9To5Google theorizes that it could be a way for the platform to introduce the HiFi level without having to charge $20. Although, as we have recently seen, they have no qualms about raising prices; especially for the second time in less than a year.
As always, taking the information from the leaks with caution is necessary. What is clear is that they are taking quite a long time to launch a HiFi rate that users have been demanding for more than five years.
