Microsoft and third-party developers are rolling out a new batch of smart Windows utilities. They take care of startup cleanup, manage background apps, tune memory use, and handle predictive maintenance for PCs that have gotten sluggish. These tools watch how the computer is actually used, then suggest changes or make them on their own. The result can be shorter boot times, quicker sign-ins, and a desktop that just feels faster overall.
On newer AI PCs with a neural processing unit, or NPU, some image-editing tasks can also run 3 to 5 times faster while using up to 80% less power. Pushing that work to the NPU can help battery life too, because it takes pressure off the CPU and GPU.
If you’ve got a newer laptop with an NPU, these Windows tools are worth a look. Older PCs may have a harder time with them. The monitoring itself can use a noticeable share of system resources.
Dell has said the current smart PC branding isn’t really landing with buyers. And if most of what you use is web-based chatbots, writing tools, or cloud assistants, you may not need dedicated local hardware in the first place.
The feature that may matter most is the early warning system: alerts for CPU temperature, memory use, disk performance, and drives that are starting to fail.
Still, always-on monitoring raises privacy concerns, and cleanup features that get too aggressive can cause stability problems. You can get these features through Microsoft and third-party Windows utilities, in a market estimated at $50.2 billion in 2024 and expected to grow to $235.28 billion by 2032. Asus also says AI PCs could account for more than half of PC sales by 2026.
