Instagram and SoundCloud turn your photos into album art

SoundCloud has joined forces with Instagram, letting you upload pictures directly from your Instagram account to the music streaming and discovery platform.  The new integration lets you instantly select photos from your Instagram feed and assign them as ‘album art’ to tracks, playlists or groups in your SoundCloud account.

SoundCloud is an online platform that lets users upload their own music. It’s also a huge source for users to discover original or independent audio content. According to CEO Alex Ljung, the site now reaches over 250 million users a month, as well as having mobile mobile apps for iPhone and Android.

SoundCloud has been noted as a good way for new artists to get their music online, and this new integration adds a nice visual element to the online music platform.

A partnership between SoundCloud and Instagram seems like a natural progression; SoundCloud already lets you connect your account with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pintrest and Google +, while Instagram  has similar integration, letting your share photos on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Tumblr.

Facebook redesigns Messenger for Android and iOS, removes SMS functionality

Facebook Messenger is getting a major redesign, both visually and functionally. The design is strikingly different from previous versions, matching the flat and colorful design of both iOS 7 and Android 4.4 KitKat. Contacts are shown in a list with a subtle icon next to their profile picture. A blue lighting bolt means your friend is using Facebook Messenger, and will receive the message immediately on his or her phone.  Contacts without Messenger are denoted by a grayed out Facebook icon.

Facebook Messenger updated interface

Although SMS functionality has been removed from Facebook Messenger, the social network isn’t leaving you stranded. If you message a contact without Messenger, the app will send the message to their Facebook inbox, even if you’re not Facebook Friends. This means the new Messenger requires users to submit their mobile numbers, like WhatsApp. Still, this will disappoint those who have been using Messenger as their SMS app. Fortunately, Google has just announced that Hangouts will be supporting SMS soon.

Facebook Messenger updated conversation look

The app has also been updated for performance, with a more responsive app around the entire interface. Facebook has also promised to push updates to Messenger more often, helping the messaging app catch up to competitors more quickly.

The new Facebook Messenger is being pushed to a limited number of Android users today. The update will roll out to the rest of iOS and Android users “in the coming weeks.”

Google+ updates Auto Awesome, now supports video

Google+ is getting a a ton of updates today, making the social network a powerful place to store and edit your media. Some of the biggest updates include full resolution backups, HDR editing, and Auto Awesome for video.

Google Plus Auto Awesome Movies

Google first introduced Auto Awesome for photos at Google I/O 2013 and is now bringing the feature to video. Google+ will analyze your photos and videos and will create an edited movie automatically for you. The algorithm is smart enough so that it can match up your videos with your photos and even add music. Users will have manual controls too if  they want to change parts of the video.

Google Plus auto remove

Auto Awesome for photos has been updated as well, giving users the ability to create action shows and erase people out of photos. This relies on a sequence of photos taken with burst mode or over a period of time. Google+ then analyzes the photo to determine if a series of photos can be turned into an animated gif, action shot, or needs people removed. Google+ can even create all three for you at the same time automatically.

iOS users are getting some Google+ love as well with full resolution backups and background sync. Google hasn’t announced when an updated Google+ for iOS app will be available but we’ll keep you guys updated.

Google Hangouts for Android gets location sharing, animated gifs and SMS integration

Google announced an update to its Hangouts app for Android at an event in San Francisco today. Hangouts will be getting location sharing, animated gifs, and SMS integration. These features were popular requests from users.

Finding your friend is even easier now as you can send a precise location with Hangouts like you can with WhatsApp. Location sharing integrates with Google Maps and will show up in-line within your conversations.

Google Hangouts animated gifs

Google loves animated gifs (as do I) so they’ve updated Google Hangouts to support animated gifs within conversations. Google has already integrated animated gifs into its social network, Google+ with animated profile cover photos and in posts.

Google has finally integrated SMS into Hangouts, putting an end to the many rumors about this feature and making it possible for Hangouts to be the only messaging app you need on Android. There’s no news about Google Voice integration into Hangouts.

Finally, Google has updated Hangouts video calls with automatic adjustments to compensate for bad webcam image quality as well as adding full screen video calls across all devices.

Google has not announced when this updated Google+ for Android will be rolling out. We’ll update you as soon as we find out.

Future Mac OS X versions will be free

Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer announced yesterday during Apple’s earnings call that all future versions of  Mac OS X will be free. This announcement comes on the heels of the free release of OS X Mavericks last week.

Apple surprised many users by offering  OS X 10.9 Mavericks completely free, but Oppenheimer confirmed that this will not be a one-time only deal. For Apple, this new model will result in a $900 million increase in net revenue recorded as deferred revenue coming from these updates.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is in a very different position. While a consistently free upgrade to its operating system means Apple users will see the benefit of renewing their equipment more often, Microsoft offers almost no hardware, aside from its Surface and Surface Pro tablets. The release of Windows 8.1 was a free update for Windows 8 users, but the company would not be able to sustain free updates to its operating system without bundling it with hardware.

A free OS update may not be the definitive factor for people choosing between Windows or Mac, but there’s no doubt that Apple users will definitely appreciate free updates.

Will Snapchat steal Facebook’s crown?

Facemash, the Daddy of the Facebook we’ve come to know and (sometimes) love, was born 10 years ago. Today, it’s Snapchat that might dethrone Facebook and could, in turn, threaten the leadership of WhatsApp, which is growing less popular with young people by the day.

Facemash and Snapchat: the search for identity and anonymity

Just like Facemash in 2003, Snapchat is an application that was born from a simple idea that was attractive to young audiences: send photos, videos and drawings that are destroyed within seconds of being seen. When we reviewed Snapchat, we decided that its success is down to its extreme simplicity and “seize the moment” attitude. Snapchat’s instant messaging is immediate, short-lasting and very visual.

Ten years ago, Facemash got off to a similar start. The underlying idea – comparing two students’ pictures and deciding who’s hotter – was very simple, very visual and a bit of a tease. In its first four hours of life, Facemash generated thousands of hits. A year later, the initial idea of a “catalog of faces” took shape in the form of Facebook, a university website that opened up to everyone from 2006. The rest, as they say, is history.

Facemash invited visitors to compare photos of randomly selected students

Beyond the differences in context, there’s another way in which Facemash and Snapchat differ completely. While Facemash was created to link your virtual identity with your actual self, Snapchat was created to break this link. If Facemash put names to photos, Snapchat converts them into messages intended to be temporary memories that cannot be associated to our virtual persona, a fact which is increasingly important (and appealing). With Snapchat, online communication once again becomes free and daring.

Facebook: less banal, more “Twitter” by the day

10 years down the line, Facebook has become a giant with over 1,200 million users. It‘s omnipresent, not to mention increasingly complex. The photos are only a small part of the Facebook experience: now we use it to inform, post news, share knowledge, even do work! Hashtags show that Facebook is aiming to become more mainstream and serious. It’s a one way trip to maturity.

By becoming something that’s as everyday as email, Facebook has normalized, or “Yahooized“. It’s no longer cool among young people, who, overwhelmed by the complexity and seriousness of the famous blue network, have gone elsewhere. So what’s caught their eye? Not other social networks, but mobile applications like Snapchat, where they spend most of their time. While Facebook is a website that has landed on mobile devices, Snapchat is a native app for the mobile era. Everything is done on the phone, and there’s no web version that could jeopardize the reputation or safety of people who exchange photos.

The fastest growing apps are mobile, based on random encounters, sexual tension and, of course, the forbidden. They aren’t small social networks that grow, they’re visual networks. Why? Writing is boring. Stickers, GIF animations and videos like Vine or Instagram (wisely acquired by Facebook) are infinitely better. What we’ve seen in recent years is an exploration of aspects that Facebook has neither the inclination nor the ability to reproduce.

Snapchat is becoming something big

In a move that nobody was surprised by, Facebook has publicly shown an interest in Snapchat. After a round of financing in which Snapchat was valued at an estimated 4,000 billion dollars, Mark Zuckerberg tried to buy Snapchat for the figure of one billion dollars, an offer that was rejected by Evan Spiegel, its CEO. For Facebook to do something like this, they must be pretty scared of Snapchat. The failure of Poke, with which Facebook tried to emulate the success of Snapchat, has made it clear that a lot of people are concerned about the prospect of sharing things through an app that bears the stamp of Facebook. Snapchat’s appeal, on the other hand, is its independence, like 4Chan or Anonymous. Its 350 million photos shared daily have made a new Fotolog. Facebook simply can’t follow this path with its current apps.

But Snapchat is maturing as well. Snapchat Stories, small narratives from photos that last 24 hours, add depth, but are still quick and temporary. Another smart move is SnapKidz, which is Snapchat’s secure mode for users under 13 years of age. It’s a user base that’s beyond the reach of Facebook.

So what’s Facebook’s Plan B? Buy WhatsApp?

WhatsApp dethroned SMS and still maintains a solid lead in Western markets, but its approach is also in the classic Facebook mold. Famous for resisting change, WhatsApp will remain true to its style for a long time, but many have doubts about its ability to continue in the first place, particularly with the existing competition.

WhatsApp is still very popular, but growth has definitely stalled

It would make sense for Facebook and WhatsApp to join forces to face Google on one side and Snapchat on the other. A union of this kind, with or without purchase by Facebook, would consolidate the family of powerful, Facebook-style applications in what would be a “suite” of applications similar to the old trio of mail-chat-blog, but updated to what’s relevant now: social network-messaging-photos. So, is it only a matter of time before Facebook buys WhatsApp and Snapchat takes the lead in this market sector? We’ll have the answers in 2014. It’s going to be an exciting year for social networks. Wikipedia Zero texts users info from the online encyclopedia

The Wikimedia Foundation, the organization behind Wikipedia, is piloting a service that provides access to Wikipedia articles on basic mobile phones. Wikipedia Zero will launch in Kenya for a three-month pilot to work out bugs before bring the service to other parts of the world.

Users who want to access articles from Wikipedia Zero will have to dial *515# and wait for a text message asking what they would like to search. After sending a query, users will get another text back to clarify which article they would like to read. Then the user will be asked which section they would like to read before all the relevant text is sent to their phone. It’ll be interesting to see how Wikipedia Zero handles long blocks of text since SMS is limited to 160 characters per message.

While it sounds cumbersome to those of us with smartphones, Wikipedia Zero could bring knowledge to those who do not have access or cannot afford connecting to the internet.
