A contact at Rapidshare using the pseudonym “Mark P.” spoke with PCtipp and revealed that the company gave 23 of its 24 employees the choice of voluntary termination at the beginning of this year. According to Mark P., there is only one employee left handling customer support.

As with other file hosting sites like Megaupload, Rapidshare has been under fire for distributing copyright protected works. It’s hard to say what exactly is going on inside Rapidshare. We have reached out for comment and will update this post if there is a response from Rapidshare.

Telegram rated ‘critical’ for poor security features

German site Test.de looked at the security of five messaging apps, WhatsApp, Telegram, Threema, LINE and BlackBerry Messenger. Newcomer Telegram, which had a huge boost from last weekend’s WhatsApp downtime, gets a ‘Critical’ rating for security, while apart from Threema the rest get ‘Very Critical’.

Telegram claims to have better privacy and security features than the competition, especially WhatsApp, but Test.de found that was only marginal. Telegram uploads your full address book to their servers without asking permission, and only provides end-to-end encryption of chats if you enable it. Normal chats are sent unencrypted. While Telegram is free, one of its creators is a founder of VK, the ‘Russian Facebook’, which is very likely to have an interest in collecting contact details.

A small consolation for Telegram is that WhatsApp, BBM and LINE are judged as being worse. All of them fail when it comes to encryption, and sharing user data with third parties. Test.de criticizes apps for putting too many clauses in Terms of Agreements that allow them to send data to third parties.

Threema does much better. It’s a paid app that encrypts chats by default, allows you to choose if you want to share your contacts and the Android version sends no user data at all to Threema servers or third parties.

The best PC games for…de-stressing

We continue our “The Best PC games for …” series, this time teaching you how to leave your stress behind with games in different genre and styles.

Maybe you’ve had a bad day: work has been stressful, you get home to an angry partner, your friends are busy, and on top of that, the fridge is empty! Don’t panic– you can de-stress by playing some games.

One of the best ways to relieve stress is to grab a controller, a mouse or your keyboard and enjoy a great game on your PC. Which games are the best  for de-stressing? We outline a few options below.

Hotline Miami: A bit of action never hurt nobody

Hotline MiamiSometimes, the best way to relieve stress is to embrace your wild side. Games like Miami Hotline are perfect for this. Taking somebody out as they cross the road? Trust me, you’ll feel better.

Don’t be fooled by the retro and colorful graphics: Hotline Miami is a first rate game. Its both challenging, and very, very addicting, to the point where once you’ve de-stressed, you’ll want to continue playing for pleasure.

Road carnage with Hotline Miami

Need for Speed Rivals: Pure driving pleasure

Need for Speed RivalsNFS is synonymous with fast, fun and thrilling races behind the wheel of beautiful vehicles. What’s better than some racing action to eliminate stress?

After you’ve spent a while being chased or doing the chasing in Need for Speed Rivals, overcoming the increasingly rapid challenges, you’ll have forgotten what you were stressed about and you’ll shut down your PC with that ridiculous mixture of satisfaction and fatigue that everyone gets after a job well done.

NFS: will you be the hunter or the hunted?

Little Inferno: Cleanse your stresses with fire!

Little InfernoThere are days when I want to destroy everything in my path, but I’m a civilized person, and I know that that’s not necessarily the smartest way to deal with stress. Good thing there are games like Little Inferno, which is a great little indie game where your goal is, simply, to burn stuff.

Such simple gameplay sounds silly, but in Little Inferno, you simply pick up objects, drag and throw them into a big fire, and somehow, it feels amazingly cathartic. In addition, this simple gameplay conceals a strange story that grabs you and doesn’t let go, so even after you’ve got all your stress and tension out of your system, you won’t want to stop playing for the sake of knowing what happens next!

Burn, baby, burn - Little Inferno

Borderlands 2: The (almost) infinite shooter

Borderlands 2Of course, there are many first person shooters. What makes Borderlands 2 my first choice for winding down? Well, it’s mainly because, despite having elements of RPG and strategy, it’s a title that plays smoothly and allows almost endless combinations of weapons, which means getting bored isn’t very likely.

Borderlands 2 isn’t just rewarding in the single player mode: multiplayer is great too, and it plays really easily, making it hard to remember what you were stressed out about in the first place.

Borderlands 2 multiplayer is great fun

Bejeweled 3: puzzle your way to calm

Puzzle games can be pretty stressful in themselves, especially those that incorporate the pressure of time or lives, like Candy Crush. I’m including a title from this genre in my selection because there are exceptions, and one of them is Bejeweled 3.

This simple (but influential) game has a Zen mode: you can play without time, without haste, and without considering the score. Merging and banishing colored pieces will become a hypnotic act, making your stress disappear like one of the jewels in the game.

Will Zen mode lead you to inner peace?

Wile out or chill out?

Talking to my friends, I’ve come to the realization that everyone needs a different de-stressing technique: some people prefer to dial up the anger and opt for destruction, while others seek slow, contemplative fun. That’s why I’ve tried to appeal to both types of stressed out players in this list.

Cut The Rope 2: 6 tips and tricks

If you haven’t had a chance to try Cut The Rope 2 for iOS, we’ve got some secrets and tips that’ll help you make the most of the sequel.

After the original and two spin-offs, the series returns with a second game, with gameplay very similar to the original. Is Cut The Rope 2 a replica of the first? Not at all, and the new game from ZeptoLabs has some interesting new items and secrets.

Did you know that Om Nom can now move around? Or that he has new friends? Here, we’ll give you some of its biggest secrets so that you can  control the little alien throughout the game.

A thrilling journey

We’ve seen him do the tour of themed worlds, celebrate Christmas, be the subject of experiments and time travel, and now, there are five more environments where Om Nom can freely travel the world.

Each world in the levels of Cut The Rope 2 is set in a different place. We begin in the forest, continue on to the beach, and then visit three different urban landscapes: a landfill, a pretty park, and the subway.

For now, Cut The Rope 2 only has these 5 worlds, but ZeptoLab has said that more will be launched soon.

Om Nom gets more handsome

Om Nom’s very cute, but his looks can get a bit boring. This has changed in Cut The Rope 2, as the friendly alien now has different caps and head wear. Some of them need to be bought, while others can be unlocked.

But Om Nom isn’t the only thing that’s become configurable: now, you can choose the look of the sighing candies or the stroke effect that you produce with your finger.

Cut the Rope 2

Making friends

If one single novelty has really affected the gameplay of Cut the Rope 2, it’s the inclusion of Om Nom’s new friends. In total, we get to know 5 creatures, equally as curious as the protagonist, but all with incredible powers.

We have the little Lick, who has a very long tongue that can be used as a gateway or to avoid dropping the candy at any given time; the checkered Blue has the ability to multiply; and Roto is a flying bug that can transport you from one site to another in a level. Yes, On Nom is now on the move!

Cut the Rope 2

On the move

Unlike previous versions of Cut The Rope where Om Nom was a static character, our friend is almost constantly moving in this edition. In fact, we can’t move yourself, but depending on the level, you can move around the stage thanks to new friends and some moving structures.

The fact that Om Nom can move is very useful when trying to get the coveted candies, but there’s also a problem– you can fall. If the character does fall at some point, you’ll have to restart the level, as it will be impossible to get to your trophy.

Cut the Rope 2

Did you see the clover?

In Cut The Rope 2, you can get to the extra levels without paying any more money, but you’ll have to work for it. In each world, there will be levels with clovers, and if you get a certain number of them, you’ll be able to access more content.

To get the clovers, you have to make the candy pass over them, just like with stars. Sometimes it’s easy, and sometimes, not so much.

Cut the Rope 2

It’s all about the stars

In Cut The Rope, a world is unlocked when you’ve cleared all the levels in the previous world, regardless of the number of stars that you’ve collected. This works a little bit differently in Cut The Rope 2.

To unlock the next world, you don’t have to have passed all of the previous levels, but you do have to have earned a certain number of stars. At first, you’ll find this quite easy, but after a certain point, you’re going to have to repeat some of the levels to achieve this.

Cut The Rope 2 is looking for excellence when it comes to achieving new levels, although as always, if you’re feeling impatient, you can always pay to unlock content.

Cut the Rope 2

Currently only available in iOS

For now, Cut The Rope 2 is only available for iPhone and iPad. When it’ll be available on other phones, such as Android or Windows Phone, we aren’t sure, but we hope soon. It’s a new title in one of the ‘sweetest’, most entertaining sagas, and not everything that involves candies has to be about Candy Crush Saga.

What do you think of the Cut the Rope series of games?

iTunes 11.1.5 update fixes device connection bug

Apple quietly released a minor update to iTunes last night, version 11.1.5 for Windows and Mac. The update fixes a specific bug where problems occurred during syncing with devices.

After the last 11.1.4 update, some users found iTunes would crash when they connected a device for syncing. This has been fixed with 11.1.5, and some minor iBooks compatibility issues for OS X Mavericks have also been fixed. Despite the minor improvements, the file still weighs in as heavily as any other iTunes update, between 80 and 100 MB.

You can update iTunes manually buy clicking Show Menu Bar, Help, then Check for Updates.

Flappy Bird clones still flooding app stores

Last week we reported that Apple and Google were cracking down on the flood of Flappy Bird clones filling up the App and Play stores. However, it seems that many are still getting through, with almost a third of new game arrivals on the App Store appearing to be at least heavily influenced by Flappy Bird.

After developer Mind Juice Media tweeted that its app ‘Flappy Dragon’ had been rejected from the App store for ‘attempting to ‘leverage a popular app’, it seemed that app stores might be really trying to control the flood of poor quality Flappy Bird clones. That now looks premature.

Briefly glancing through the new games on the App Store, many of them are clearly trying to ‘leverage’ Flappy Bird’s popularity. There’s ‘Flying Bacon Free‘, where you ‘help the flappy pig make it through the pipes’, ‘Mad Flapper‘, ‘Fly flappy‘, and even ‘Flappy Beard Hipster Quest‘. The list goes on and on.

Clones of big games, from Angry Birds to Candy Crush Saga, are easy to find on app stores, and while clear copyright infringement is usually dealt with, there is clearly a huge grey area where clones can exist.
