By August 2024, Netflix had already renewed the British sci-fi drama Supacell for a second season, even though it didn’t have the built-in lift of franchise branding. Rapman later said filming was underway. Now, reports say production has wrapped.
Netflix says Supacell has turned into one of its biggest tracked sci-fi hits, pulling in 51 million views and 265.7 million hours watched. Since Netflix’s wider What We Watched data only begins in 2023, that’s best read as one of its biggest tracked sci-fi shows, not one of its biggest ever. Still, the numbers are strong: in Netflix’s data, it sits at No. 7 among sci-fi titles in that window after premiering on June 27, 2024, and it hit No. 2 on the global English TV Top 10 in its first week, according to Netflix.
There’s still no release date. Rapman has said Supacell was planned as a three-season story, centered on five Black strangers in South London. Their powers, the shadowy organization hunting them, and the show’s sickle cell link all feed into its Black British take on poverty, racism, exploitation, and job insecurity.
If superhero sci-fi is your thing, Supacell is easy to recommend for the authenticity, the social commentary, and the “Supacell Six” push to create openings for emerging Black TV creatives. It’s streaming on Netflix now.
