Hunter x Hunter is known for being one of the most celebrated, well-known, and beloved shonen manga and anime in the world. Despite its immense popularity, it also has one quirk: its frequent hiatuses. The reason is the illness of its author, Yoshihiro Togashi, who because of his health can’t draw for long periods of time. But the author has decided to change this situation. At least as much as he can.
An author with a terrible ailment
Togashi has decided that, from now on, he will not accept any outside work, focusing exclusively on finishing Hunter x Hunter. “For a combination of physical and mental health issues, I have decided that after completing the work I’m committed to right now, I will not accept any more future proposals that involve deadlines. I will prioritize working on my own manuscripts,” he explained on his X account, the social network formerly known as Twitter. “When I resume drawing my work, I will announce it again here.”
While this doesn’t ensure that he can finish his work or when, it should help him continue it. Especially since the author suffers from intense chronic back pain, for reasons he has not revealed publicly, which required surgery in 2024. Pain so severe that there have been periods of his recent life when he simply couldn’t stay seated for more than a few minutes without the pain becoming unbearable, although it seems this ailment has improved significantly after the operation. Hopefully, after this decision Togashi will finally be able to work on his manga again more regularly.
