As the latest data shows, Tesla’s autonomous driving system (FSD) is still far from autonomous driving without supervision in customer vehicles, which is what Elon Musk promised for June 2025, but it has significantly improved in recent months.
For those who don’t know, Elon Musk promised that Tesla would launch FSD without supervision in Texas by June 2025. The reality is not that.
The combination of improvements in autonomous driving and the fact that Elon Musk can’t bear many more losses with the missed deadlines of FSD has pushed Tesla to find a solution: Waymo.
Musk has dismissed Waymo’s approach to autonomous driving for years. He claimed that its geolocated, mapped, and teleoperated approach would not be scalable.
However, that is almost exactly what Tesla is about to launch in Austin, Texas, this year.
Tesla changes the rules to justify its 27th delay
The CEO confirmed that Tesla’s plan is a “paid autonomous transport service without supervision that uses an internal fleet of Tesla vehicles” in Austin in June.
The planned teleoperation, combined with the limited service to Austin, suggests that Tesla will launch a geolocated service that will optimize the performance of FSD in Austin and use teleoperation to support the vehicles.
That looks a lot like Waymo’s product, which has been available in many cities in the United States for years.
Regarding the long-awaited capability of unsupervised autonomous driving in all customer vehicles produced since 2016, it seems that Elon Musk is too afraid to share a timeline after consistently being wrong for a decade. Musk is once again moving the goalposts to avoid losing the game.
