Google Photos is adding a floating camera button to the photo picker in tools such as Photo Remix and Photo to Video on Android and iOS. If you’re already inside one of those features and need a fresh shot, you can take it there instead of backing out to your phone’s main camera app.
That should make quick selfies, object shots, and other on-the-spot photos much easier to work into spontaneous edits. Say you want to turn a portrait into a sketch, an anime-style image, or a 3D animation. Or maybe you want to animate a still photo with subtle motion, or let it move in a more randomized way. This cuts out a few steps.
One catch: Google says photos taken this way are automatically saved to your Google Photos library and backed up. So if you tend to take one-off experiment shots just to test an effect, you’ll probably want to keep an eye on what ends up in your library.
The update also fits Google’s broader push to make Photos do more than backup for its 1.5 billion users and 9 trillion stored images, at least according to Google. These newer features are powered by Nano Banana and Gemini Omni. Edited images will carry C2PA Content Credentials, too. Google also says your personal Google Photos data isn’t used for ads or to train generative models outside Google Photos, even if the usual concerns around authenticity and misuse aren’t going anywhere.
If you use Google Photos’ creative tools regularly, this is a pretty good reason to update.
The floating camera button is rolling out in Google Photos on Android and iOS. Availability may vary by device and region, and newer features still tend to show up in the US first.
