LaGuardia Airport Terminal B is testing a new robot dog that roams the terminal checking air quality as it goes. The four-wheeled unit was built by Skild and put into service by ABM for LaGuardia Gateway Partners. It joins the robot vacuums and floor scrubbers already working in Terminal B, but this one has a different assignment: picking up pollutants and spotting pockets of stale indoor air, not handling security or cleaning.
ABM hasn’t decided yet how dependable the robot dog is under real airport conditions, so this remains a pilot, not a full deployment. The logic is pretty straightforward. A sensor platform that can move has an advantage in a terminal packed with travelers, rolling bags, food counters, and stores, especially compared with fixed monitors that only tell you what’s happening in one spot.
It also lines up with the bigger automation and sustainability effort at Terminal B. The terminal already uses robots for floor care and has LEED Gold certification. Now it’s trying the same kind of tech for environmental monitoring. Some details are still missing, though: no public numbers on what the robot dog costs, which pollutants it’s tracking, or exactly how the airport plans to use the data.
If you keep an eye on airport automation, this is the kind of trial to pay attention to. The robot dog is being tested now in LaGuardia Airport Terminal B. Similar machines have shown up at airports in Munich and Fairbanks too, and LaGuardia Terminal B had already tried a security robot back in 2018, the B-3PO.
