Initially listed as partners when the new generation of CarPlay was announced in June 2022, these brands raised concerns about ceding too much control over their in-car infotainment systems once Apple detailed the features of CarPlay Ultra this past May.
CarPlay Ultra is designed to take complete control of a vehicle’s screens, including the speedometer and climate controls, effectively replacing traditional interfaces with Apple’s own.
Excitement Turns to Skepticism as Carplay Ultra Partners Withdraw
This dominance is what led to widespread apprehension among the automotive giants. “We’re not going to let Apple take over all of the infotainment,” stated Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, emphasizing the importance of both hardware and software in crafting an exemplary customer experience.
Not exploring the full repercussions, Audi echoed similar sentiments, with Renault even cautioning Apple to “not try to invade our systems”.
This pushback starkly contrasts with the initial enthusiasm for CarPlay Ultra, which included partners like Aston Martin, the only manufacturer to confirm support prior to the official launch.
Following the announcement, brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have expressed their backing, perhaps eying a chance to capitalize on Apple’s technology without the same reservations held by their larger counterparts.
A recent Apple study indicated that 79% of U.S. buyers only consider vehicles capable of using CarPlay. However, this figure does not imply a preference for Apple’s version over established brand interfaces. As the conversation around user control and integration continues, Apple’s vision for CarPlay Ultra may need to be refined if it hopes to win over these skeptical automakers.
