The modding community for Sony games on PC is very creative and has big ambitions. That seems to have been bothering the Japanese company lately. Or that’s what its actions suggest, since they’ve decided not to allow one of the community’s most anticipated mods to be released: a PvP multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC.
Sony on a historic run to make everyone hate them
According to Speclizer, the modder who was working on it, “the TLOU 2 multiplayer mod, which has been in development since January, was planned for release this month. Unfortunately, I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking me not to release the mod. It’s very sad that this never got to see the light of day, but I hope you’ll keep following me in my next project, which this time will be something of my own”. This brought the project to an end.
Last June he uploaded a 25-minute video showing the mod, impressing the community. Clarifying that development began last January, he had planned to finish it this month, September. This was made possible by the financial support he was receiving on Patreon. This may be why Sony also wanted to put an end to the project.
Another reason is that Sony has tried to make its own version of The Last of Us Online and failed. In December 2023 it canceled The Last of Us Online, saying the game was too large and would require too much post-launch support, which could damage the development of other Naughty Dog games. This ended the project. And now, with this mod being shut down before it could even launch, it seems players won’t be able to play The Last of Us online either, not even on their own.
