StarCraft 2 PTR gets new June 18 build: 8-worker start stays

Blizzard Entertainment pushed a new StarCraft 2 Public Test Realm build for patch 5.0.16 on June 18, according to the latest PTR update. It brings another pass of balance changes, and Blizzard is still holding the line on the 8-worker start.

That broader overhaul first landed on the PTR in late May, billed as StarCraft 2’s biggest update in years. Blizzard says the aim is to slow down the early and mid-game a bit, give players tougher choices to make, and open up more strategic variety. This new build tweaks Zerg’s early game again and makes more Warpgate adjustments for Protoss after player feedback, but it still stops short of restoring the 12-worker opening introduced with StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void back in 2015.

If you actually spend time on the StarCraft 2 PTR, this is a build you’ll probably want to grab. People who like the change say a slower opening could change the rhythm of matches, make timing attacks hit harder, and bring a broader mix of build orders back into play.

Not everyone sees it that way. Critics argue it could push the game toward a slower, more defensive meta, while also making scouting riskier and throwing off timing in ways that don’t hit every race equally. Pro players, streamers, and tournament regulars are already stress-testing the new build orders and economic breakpoints as hard as possible, which goes a long way toward explaining why Blizzard hasn’t backed off the change.

Still, it’s too early to know what any of this does to ladder health, esports viewership, player retention, or the wider response from the Korean scene. The latest StarCraft 2 PTR build is available now through Battle.net on PC.
