Tesla denies China FSD exit rumors: Shanghai center still operating

Tesla says it hasn’t backed away from bringing Full Self-Driving (FSD) to China, pushing back on reports that it shut down its Shanghai data center, pulled liaison teams, and cut jobs tied to the effort. The company says those rumors aren’t true.

It also says the Shanghai data center is still operating as usual, hiring for driver-assistance roles is picking up speed, and the issue has been reported to police. Even so, it’s easy to see why people still have doubts.

China still isn’t on Tesla’s official list of 12 markets where FSD (Supervised) is available by subscription, even though some Tesla pages in the U.S. have, at times, suggested that China is included.

Tesla first announced FSD in China in May 2026, later renamed it “Tesla Assisted Driving,” and still hasn’t shared pricing or a broad release timetable after earlier February/March and Q3 2026 targets slipped. Then there are the obstacles: data-localization rules, reliance on Baidu mapping, and stricter standards set to take effect in July 2027. Meanwhile, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Xpeng are moving faster; some analysts still describe Tesla’s system as Level 2-plus; some users say it feels like an “unacclimatised American driver”; and buyers who already paid 64,000 yuan still don’t know whether they’ll get refunds, upgrades, or a clear delivery timeline.

If you follow Tesla in China, keep watching this. Until China shows up on Tesla’s official market list and Tesla puts out a real launch plan, the questions aren’t going anywhere.

You can track the status on Tesla’s official market list and its China website.
