Bethesda is doing everything to make sure that in ten years we will still be playing ‘Starfield‘, but the truth is that things are not looking good for the open-world space RPG. After not being nominated for Game of the Year, on Christmas Day, December 25th, the game received the worst possible gift: users have voted it with enough negative reviews for it to have “mostly negative” ratings on Steam. Ouch.
The malfunctioning ship
‘Starfield’ was announced in 2018 and its release, five years later, has not been what the vast majority of players expected, becoming one of the standout titles of the year for reasons completely unrelated to gameplay. After starting relatively positively, opinions on Steam gradually declined towards the middle zone in November.
Bethesda is confident that their first DLC will be exactly what people need to return to space, but the truth is that, looking at the active player numbers on Steam, the game needs a true revolution to gain the public’s appreciation. And, of course, the successful relaunch of ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ hasn’t helped: people haven’t stopped comparing them, favoring CD Projekt RED’s title.
So far, the producer’s attempt to mitigate the fire has been to individually respond to each of the negative reviews by stating that the fact that some planets are empty is not boring per se. Neil Armstrong reached the moon, it was empty and he wasn’t bored. No, I didn’t make this up, it’s an exact example given by Todd Howard, the director. ‘Starfield’ may last another ten years, but for now the prospects are not very good. Or, at least, mostly negative.
