Battlefield 2042 is over. What happens to the saga now?

The latest to fall has been Battlefield 2042 after seven honorable seasons.

When all game developers announced that the future of the medium would follow the “Fortnite-like” model (divided into seasons that would be updated every quarter), many of us thought that the system wouldn’t be able to handle so many ‘Fortnites’ at once. And indeed, that’s been the case. The latest to fall has been ‘Battlefield 2042’ after a respectable seven seasons: the game, which appeared in 2021 to lukewarm reviews – to put it kindly – reaches its final stop, but that doesn’t mean that EA is willing to let go of its golden goose. Or something similar to gold, at least.

Battlefield: the console

The good part, if you are a fan of the franchise, is that the lack of future updates does not mean that the servers will close, so you can keep shooting to your heart’s content until they announce the next game, which they have already announced will be terribly ambitious. In fact, to help them, EA has assembled a team from Motive Studio, the creators of ‘Star Wars Squadrons’ or the remake of ‘Dead Space’. Big words.

The team has been chosen for “their proven experience in storytelling, creating immersive battles, and developing on the Frostbite engine.” However, that doesn’t mean you should expect the next Battlefield made by them tomorrow morning. On the contrary: the team has already stated that it is not their only priority and they are still working on the ‘Iron Man’ video game which could be the hit that our hearts need to hold onto our love for superheroes.

Does this mean that we won’t have a new Battlefield game until we forget about the saga? Not necessarily: ‘Battlefield 1’ and ‘Battlefield V’ (first of all, no confusion with the names) were released with a two or three-year gap, and that’s probably what they will end up looking for by having multiple studios working on their projects at the same time. Get your machine gun ready, because it may not be silent for many more months.

The next Battlefield will be a dream for destruction lovers

A job offer claims that Ripple Effect, the studio formerly known as DICE LA, aims to offer the most realistic destruction effects of any video game in the upcoming Battlefield that will be released.

Discovered by Tech4Gamers, this new job listing for a Visual Effects Director position claims that the EA-owned studio is “looking for a senior 3D artist like you to help us create the most realistic and exciting destruction effects in the industry“.

Ripple Effect is currently one of the multiple studios working on the Battlefield franchise, which has undergone significant production restructuring following the disappointing launch of Battlefield 2042.

The latest installment from DICE was a cold shower for fans of the saga, who experienced a large number of bugs in the first weeks after the release, to which we must add the reduction of features and game modes such as the 128-player Breakthrough mode, which was reduced to 64 players in the 4.1 update.

DICE is currently working on a future multiplayer experience for the Battlefield series and will co-develop the next single-player campaign for Battlefield with Ridgeline Games, the new studio from Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto. According to EA, Ripple Effect is developing a “completely new Battlefield experience that will complement and build upon the foundations of the series”.

The Los Angeles developer had previously acted as a support team for other studios, including collaborating with DICE to develop Battlefield 2042. In December 2021, EA announced its intention to create a “connected Battlefield universe” along with widespread changes in the franchise’s development structure.

As part of these plans, the former CEO of DICE, Oscar Gabrielson, completely left EA, while the co-founder of Respawn and Infinity Ward, Vince Zampella, took on a new role as supervisor of the entire Battlefield franchise.

Electronic Arts is keen to follow in the success of Battlefield 2042. To show its commitment to the series, it’s created a new Seattle video game studio called Ridgeline Games. Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the Halo series, will lead the new team into its future development adventures.

The main focus of Ridgeline for the Battlefield universe will be to create a new narrative for an upcoming game. Lehto will have several veterans with him on the team. While we don’t have the names of these experts as yet, it does sound rather exciting.

In the official report from EA, the game company indicates that the studio will be working on another epic title. It states that the business wants to continue to invest in Battlefield’s future, showcasing some new talent along the way. Ridgeline Games will have to show if it’s worthy to develop a new game in such a strong franchise.

Battlefield 2042 Season 2 has already started, so the news of possible a new game in the series is exhilarating. The trailer for the season is intense, teasing at the new content in the midst of battle. There are another 100 tiers to pass, so it’s time to get your guns armed and ready for action.

It will be interesting to see how Season 2 unfolds. An update for Battlefield 2042 Season 1 saw the removal of the 128-player mode. Many of us are hoping that the same problems don’t appear in the new season with so much new content available to gamers.

New update of Battlefield 2042 removes 128-player breakthrough

Battlefield 2042 hasn’t really been on the receiving end of terribly positive reviews. However, EA and DICE are adamant the game could be a success yet. Unfortunately, no matter how many updates the companies push to the first-person shooter, player interest doesn’t seem to increase much. The latest release, Update 4.1, doesn’t promise to be any more exciting than the last, primarily owing to the fact that it officially removes the 128-player Breakthrough mode from Battlefield 2048.

DICE has said that the mode simply wasn’t working as it should have been, which is why it’s now been removed in favor of a 64-player Breakthrough mode. Here’s what VICE had to say when asked about the removal: ‘In Breakthrough’s 128 player mode, we feel that the value and impact of an individual player and squad are reduced due to the increased intensity and chaos of the combat.’ The growing feeling amongst gamers is that the mode was removed because such a high potential player count on a game that doesn’t see that amount of players online concurrently is a little redundant.

DICE, however, maintains that the decision is purely motivated by the need for a more balanced player experience. ‘Reducing our player count here helps to remove some of the chaos from the experience, and in combination with the reductions that we have made to the number of available combat vehicles, it means players are better able to hold frontlines more effectively. Players will also find more space to work together and fulfill their individual roles.’

It would be ignorant to say that this move to a 64-player Breakthrough mode is controversial. It’s more expected in the grander scheme of the game’s popularity. But DICE is adamant that it’s the right choice and will garner a more dedicated player base. ‘We believe that the move to 64 players will bring back the pacing that helps celebrate these moments of teamwork and PTFOing, and will be keeping a close eye on how our changes help to improve the experience ahead of the start of Season 1.’

Only June, and the release of Battlefield 2042 Season 1, will tell whether EA and VICE are making the right improvements or whether the game will continue to slip slowly, unnoticeably, into irrelevance. Until then, why not reminisce about the time Battlefield 2042 added and then promptly removed zombies?

Battlefield 2042 releases and then removes Zombie Mode

DICE had so many first-person shooter gamers excited when it launched Zombie Survival for Battlefield 2042 last week. Human players faced off against the undead in much the same way as we’ve seen for Call of Duty Black Ops games. One day later, the publisher and developer removed the new mode just as quickly when they realized they’d made a mistake.

Justin Wiebe, Ripple Effect Studios’ senior design director, took to Twitter to explain what happened. Gamers that completed Zombie Survival games enjoyed XP progression that was much faster than usual. While we’re sure many players love it, there were other gamers that weren’t impressed.

Wiebe puts it down to the team’s desire to develop exciting zombie games. In some way, we understand their situation. With Call of Duty Cold War raking it in as far as the FPS survival horror multiplayer genre is concerned, it’s no surprise that DICE wanted to push for Zombie Survival in Battlefield 2042 as soon as possible.

Well, now we see what happens when you don’t make sure all the right boxes are ticked before you release a game mode. Not even Wiebe fully knows how this issue managed to bypass the review team.

It doesn’t mean that Zombie Survival is completely gone from Battlefield 2042, though. We just have to wait a bit longer before we can continue beheading the undead for our own enjoyment with proper progression. Until then, you can enjoy the new Gun Game that they’ve placed in the online arena instead.

How to play Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 is the latest game in the series by Electronic Arts and DICE, which launched today November 19, 2021. With so many gamers heading over to play Call of Duty: Vanguard for free this weekend, it’s going to be chaos deciding which one to try first.

If you’ve waited long enough for the game to appear, you’ll want to know how to play Battlefield 2042 and get straight into the action. Luckily, you have us to guide you.

How to play Battlefield 2042: a Gamer Guide

Since Battlefield 2042 launched on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, we understand that the gameplay mechanics will be slightly different per platform. So, we’ll stick to general guidelines when playing this first-person shooter action game.

1. Find your Specialist

In previous games, the various classes of Recon, Engineer, Medic, and Assault has specific weapons and items only they could use. Moving more towards the latest Call of Duty operators, Battlefield 2042 now lets you choose Specialists that can use any weapons. They still retain unique gadgets, so you’ll have that chance to see which one works best for you.

2. Experiment with loadouts

Before you head into a game lobby, you may want to spend some time working on your loadouts. You can customize your weapons to ensure you have the best experience when in the arena. As you level them up, you’ll unlock more parts to attach for greater damage and firepower.

3. Prep your weapons for all scenarios

One new gameplay element we haven’t seen before is the ability to switch attachments and parts while on the battlefield. Sure, you can edit them and then wait to spawn before they change, but now you can do it while fighting. There’s a Plus system that opens a panel where you can quickly exchange one component for another.

4. Rely on vehicles for transport

If you need to quickly travel somewhere, you don’t have to wait until you respawn at HQ. There’s an airdrop system in place that will bring the vehicle you require to you. Of course, you’ll need to hold off any forces that may arrive by that time, but this new feature is incredibly convenient.

5. Remember bullet-drop aspects for long-distance shots

One realistic element that Battlefield 2042 brings to the war table is bullet drop. When you’re aiming from a distance, you’ll need to target slightly above your opponent’s head. What makes it more complicated is that this factor differs for each weapon, so you’ll need to practice when you have a new firearm in your hands.

6. Take the higher ground

There are many Battlefield 2042 maps that are overly complicated, and it can be challenging to get a handle on where the enemy is. Some operators have unique equipment that will get you to higher spots. You can also use ziplines in some locations. Just remember, there’s a good chance they’ll see you up there too.

7. Play the right role

When you’re playing Battlefield 2042 online with friends, it helps if you choose a role to fulfill. Your teammates may need ammunition, and it always helps to have a medic on the field. You may even have the opportunity to repair a vehicle in the midst of battle. If you have a mic, discuss which roles they need and see how you can help.

8. Try Hazard Zone with friends

One of the new modes to make an appearance in Battlefield 2042 is Hazard Zone. It’s a smaller map, but you’ll need all your skills to survive. It will test your wits, and you’ll need the best weapons and gadgets at your side. We recommend you take some friends with you at a chance to become the ultimate winner.

9. Discord is your friend

Since Battlefield 2042 doesn’t come with VOIP, you’ll need to find a different way to chat with your teammates. For PlayStation and Xbox, you can create parties on the console to talk over your mic. PC players can use the built-in text system, but it’s not the most effective method. Head onto Discord and use the mic there to discuss your strategies.

If you don’t have it yet, you can download Discord here.

10. Focus on the objective

While there are many players simply intent on getting as many kills as possible, you’ll earn more experience in Battlefield 2042 by completing objectives. If you need to capture sections, then focus on that instead of the next headshot. Your team will go up on the leaderboard the more you finish tasks.
