The remastered versions of Final Fantasy VII are exclusive to PS5 (or maybe not)

There has been a rectification, yes, but ‘Remake’ and ‘Rebirth’ are still marked as exclusives. Okay. So, what now?

The video game press does what it can. Yesterday, the Washington Post shook everything up (figuratively, of course) when it claimed that PlayStation had secured the Final Fantasy VII trilogy as a console exclusive, drowning out the cries of Xbox players, and perhaps Nintendo players (you never know with a Nintendo fan, to be honest). There has been a correction, yes, but ‘Remake’ and ‘Rebirth’ are still marked as exclusives. Alright. And now what?

Final Fantasy VII, el final

Gene Park, the chattiest reporter at The Washington Post, clarified on Twitter that “It was a mistake on our part. The entire Final Fantasy 7 trilogy is NOT confirmed as a Sony exclusive. The article has been fixed to mention only Remake and Rebirth.” And yes, you’re thinking the same thing: Why on earth would they license only the third game of the ‘Final Fantasy VII’ remake to other consoles? Who knows.

Perhaps some executive suddenly got very nervous in Sony’s offices, but there’s no reason for that: by this point, it would be extremely rare if this third part were to go to another console. Just in case, and eager not to give that executive a heart attack, let’s leave it like this: two confirmed exclusives and one that, for now, isn’t. But, well, probably it is. Who are we kidding?

The influence of Disney on ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’. Yes, really

Were they going to ruin the first RPG of an entire generation, or on the contrary, were they going to treat it with the necessary love? Would it have extra scenes or would it become a mere senseless wandering, repeating over and over again what we already experienced in the 90s?

When they announced the remake of Final Fantasy VII, we all trembled thinking about what they would change, undoubtedly, with demonic arts. Were they going to ruin the first RPG of a whole generation or, on the contrary, were they going to treat it with the necessary love? Would it have extra scenes or would it become a mere aimless wandering, repeating over and over again what we already experienced in the 90s? Now we already know the solution, and before congratulating Naoki Hamaguchi, we should first do the same with… Disney.

Kingdom Fantasy

You might be thinking “But this is not ‘Kingdom Hearts‘”. And you’re right. But the truth is that ‘Final Fantasy VII’ was actually inspired by ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Not the original version with Lumière and animated company in two dimensions, but the remake starring Emma Watson. Hamaguchi himself claims that the movie “impressed him a lot” because it was more or less what they had in mind.

So, taking a mythical “untouchable” product and giving it a twist to “work it in a much more realistic style”. The truth is that personally, the remake of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ seems unnecessary and a bit too dirty, but the one of ‘Final Fantasy VII’ is much more accurate, with new scenes that bring depth to the plot (and a good handful of side missions that… well, you know).

Hamaguchi, upon seeing ‘Beauty and the Beast’, was surprised to see that it was basically the same, “but the characters were shown in much more detail”. Thus, they decided to be respectful to the original, drawing on top of it and never really deviating from the path set 25 years ago. It was the only way for it to turn out well. Hey, who would have thought that seeing Cloud again would depend on Lumiere, Cogsworth, and Chip?

There will be a third part of the remake of ‘Final Fantasy VII’, but it won’t arrive soon

From the production company, they have stated that it is currently in the same state as the second part was when the first one was released. If it took four years, let’s hope you’ll still want to play in 2028, even with a generational change included.

I don’t think there was much doubt: after the monumental success of ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ and the one we already intuited from ‘Rebirth’, Square Enix is already working on the final episode of the trilogy. But of course, beyond the character modeling, they don’t have anything yet, so we have to wait. In fact, the production company has stated that it is currently in the same state as the second part was when the first one was released. If it took them four years, let’s hope you still want to play in 2028, including a generational change.

Final fantasy before the real final

For now, we only know that the script has already progressed and they are brainstorming how to introduce some new parts of the plot. Take it as you want. They have a tentative first draft that they will then have to modify and improve as the game develops. It’s good news, of course, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that in 2025 we will still be talking about this unnamed game.

The good thing is that we are pretty sure (although in this industry you never know) that there won’t be a fourth part. Yes, we will have remasters of the remakes, with imperceptible improvements at this point, but the story will be completely told. Another thing is that afterwards the team doesn’t start working on ‘Final Fantasy VIII’. Whatever it takes so that we don’t look at the sales of ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ and the doubtful future of the franchise, after all.

You can now try ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’ starting today

This new invention from Square Enix, the second part of the new -supposedly- definitive trilogy of Cloud and company’s adventures, is about to be released on the 29th. And we know you’re going to buy it. But just in case, they’ve already prepared a demo available on PS5. You never know.

If back in the day you were too lazy to switch discs while playing ‘Final Fantasy VII’, the four-year wait between ‘Remake’ and ‘Rebirth‘ must have felt endless. However, it’s coming to an end because this new invention from Square Enix, the second part of the -supposedly- definitive trilogy of Cloud and company’s adventures, is about to be released on the 29th. And we know you’re going to buy it. But just in case, they have already prepared a demo available on PS5. You never know.

Simple Bread Rolls

The demo will show you the first steps of the Nibelheim episode, where you can choose to play as Cloud or Sephiroth. “Discover the initial episode of the game’s story and explore the world map. Your adventure, your choice!”, says Square itself. It is one of the surprises that Sony was possibly keeping for today’s State of Play, which promises to be a strong statement.

It will be there where we will know everything about this ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’ that will continue from ‘Remake’ but will not keep your stats from that game. If you finished at maximum level with the idea of making the next game a walk, we have bad news. The remakes that change key plot elements, in the style of ‘Evangelion’, are starting to become something very common and certainly logical: keep the fans attentive and let them trust to then give them the blow.

No one knows exactly what will be hidden among the intertwined stories of ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’, but for the first time, we can get close to intuiting them. These are sweet times for lovers of RPGs, because just a couple of years ago, a remake of ‘Crisis Core’ also appeared for all consoles, and, truth be told, it is having much more success than the sixteenth part released last year.

No one knows what awaits in the future of Square Enix, but the success and hype caused by this ‘Rebirth’ leads to think that, maybe, perhaps, it is time to get to work retelling the most beloved episodes of the franchise and leave the seventeenth part for a moment when the audience is more receptive.

A discussion about a video game’s loud volume ends in the only possible way: with gunshots

It all started on October 4 at around 7 in a house in Philadelphia, where a 12-year-old boy and his father, Michael Hwang, 42, began arguing about the volume of a video game.

When, back in the day, ‘Final Fantasy VII‘ was accused of causing the katana murder, all gamers came out in unison to say it was nonsense and that video games would never make anyone violent. Years later, after the advent of online gaming, we might want to retract our support for the gaming world. However, if we want a definitive argument against video games, nothing – I repeat: nothing – can equal this story where a very loud volume turned into a massacre worthy of Quentin Tarantino.

Bang Hero

It all started on October 4th, around 7 PM, in a house in Philadelphia, where a 12-year-old boy and his 42-year-old father, Michael Hwang, began arguing about the volume of a video game (it hasn’t been disclosed which one, but let’s imagine it was ‘Starfield‘, for example). The argument escalated, and an uncle, who was present in the house, tried to calm them down. It didn’t work. In fact, it worsened the situation, and the dispute reached a point where the father fired a .40-caliber Glock pistol (to put it plainly: it packs a punch) inside the house. Hopefully, this would be the end of the story.

The shot didn’t injure anyone or cause any damage, but it was enough for the uncle and the son to try to escape from Hwang by hiding upstairs. He followed them and shot the uncle in the face. Something tells me the child won’t be getting near a console for a very long time. When the police arrived, Hwang was waiting for them wearing a bulletproof vest and holding the gun, and he started shooting at the officers, who ended up killing him. For whatever reason.

In total: three police officers injured, the uncle in critical condition, and the father dead. It’s also true, and it needs to be said, that Hwang was already known to the police department for his erratic behavior, and it probably had more to do with a confrontation that escalated rather than the video game itself. The next time you want to ask someone to wear headphones or lower the volume, just in case, make sure to hide all the weapons well, lest the example spreads.

The worst possible news: ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’ doesn’t allow you to load your saved games

Times have changed and now to play ‘Final Fantasy VII’ you do not need to change the disc, but rather buy it separately for PS5 after several years… and without data transfer.

Do you remember that time you played ‘Final Fantasy VII’ on your PSX (possibly, let’s not deny it, pirated)? The excitement of finishing one disc and starting another while preserving your level, your weaponry, and your well-balanced points was something incredible. Times have changed, and now to play ‘Final Fantasy VII,’ you don’t need to change discs but buy it separately for PS5 after several years… and without data transfer.

Why do you want to load the data, haha? Greetings!

If you’ve been spending years maxing out your characters in the hope that the journey through ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,’ the sequel to ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake,’ would be a breeze, think again. Despite the story continuing from the previous installment, you won’t be able to continue with your characters as they were because “each game is its own distinct entry.”

Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of this sequel, explained: “The balance of each game is done independently, and players’ levels and abilities will not carry over from one game to the next.” It’s worth noting that, even though fans have been thinking for years about how to breeze through ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,’ it actually makes sense that after defeating high-level enemies, you can’t start from scratch again.

But if you played the first part back in 2020, Square Enix has a few things for you: if you have saved data from that, you’ll have Materia to summon Leviathan. If you also have data from ‘Intermission,’ you’ll get Materia to do the same with Ramuh. Of course, this saved data must be on your PS5 when you insert the ‘Rebirth’ disc, or else we’re in trouble.

We remind you that this second installment of the remake will be released on February 29, 2024, and there will still be one more part to complete the trilogy in the midst of a chaotic time for the developer. After that, will the remake of ‘Final Fantasy VIII’ come? Hopefully.

Volume, Final Fantasy VII, and Horizon Chase: let’s Click-Swipe-Play

Welcome to Click-Swipe-Play, Softonics new gaming show. I am going to bring you three reviews in under three minutes – and then make sure that you are primed for next week’s big games.

And as if to celebrate the first show, every game this week is great.

I start with the classic Final Fantasy VII, which has just been released on iOS allowing you to play on the move the game that popularized the Japanese RPG genre in the West.

The retro racer Horizon Chase is my second choice. If you ever played Outrun then this game should be instantly familiar, yet it also has a stack of intelligent updates for mobile gaming.

My last game this week is the brilliant Volume, a stealthy puzzle game with a striking art style. The game’s abstract environments allow for lots of visual clues to aid your escapades, remove the vagaries that so often ruin the genre.

And we wrap up with a reminder of next week’s releases, including Metal Gear Solid V and Lara Croft GO.
