The Sims 4 will be free forever + a new free kit!

EA has just announced that starting on October 18th, The Sims 4 base game will be free to play – forever! While jubilation and celebration abound throughout the EA-positive Twitterverse and Sims YouTube, pragmatists the world over are asking the same question; is EA doing enough?

The Sims 4 DOWNLOAD

Examining the facts, we see that no game in The Sims’ history has had more packs and additional content than The Sims 4. Eleven expansion packs and nine stuff packs were released during The Sims 3’s tenure as the preeminent life simulation game. In contrast, The Sims 4 currently has 57 content packs, split between expansion, stuff, and game packs, and the recent addition of smaller packs called kits. Mind you, these 30-odd further packs that The Sims 4 has don’t add much that The Sims 3 didn’t have.

In reality, Sims 3 packs like The Sims 3: Supernatural, have been divided into The Sims 4: Werewolves, Vampires, Paranormal Stuff, Realm of Magic, and Spooky Stuff. One pack essentially hacked up into five costly purchases. It’s difficult to put a number to how much the entire Sims 4 catalog will cost you. However, through research, we can give you a number – no less than $900. That is grotesque.

If we take that $900 it would take to own all of the Sims 4 DLC and subtract the cost of the base game, we get to an equally ridiculous $880. So, The Sims 4 base game being made available to everyone for free doesn’t really seem like anything more than EA throwing its loyal customers a bone after years of overpricing and overproducing content for The Sims 4.

The other question is what does the base game actually let you do? Well, in the grand scheme of the amazing things you can do with the 57 DLC packs, not much. Yes, EA is constantly adding one or two items into the base game, but none of these affect the game’s playability. The Sims 4 base game is still a barely-worthwhile introductory title and the gateway to spending more money than you normally would on content that largely has no effect on your real-world life.

The Sims 4

One can see why there are so many videos highlighting which Sims 4 packs you should buy and which are a waste of money.

One consolation is that you can pick up the latest kit, Desert Luxe for free if you’ve already bought the Sims 4. This lasts until the 17th of October, which means waiting to get the base game for free will not entitle you to picking this one up gratis. Oh EA, you old so and so.

EA Introduces Sexuality to The Sims 4

LGBTQIA+ activists and allies are celebrating Electronic Arts, Maxis, and The Sims 4 today, thanks to the recent steps that the developers have taken toward gender inclusivity. The latest of these steps is an update to the base game that introduces sexuality, a concept that historically hasn’t been featured in The Sims franchise.

The Sims 4 DOWNLOAD

I’m all for new gameplay options in a life simulation game but are all these inclusivity-focused updates enough to distract from the failings of the recent packs?

The way relationships and attraction worked prior to the recent update was based on how strong one Sim’s relationship was with another. For instance, if two Sims reached the level of best friends, it would usually be easier for them to initiate romantic interactions. Subsequent to the recent update, the romance and attraction mechanics are based on both relationship strength and the sexual orientation of the Sim in question.

The new feature rolls out alongside the new over-hyped High School Years expansion pack and will be accessible through the Create-A-Sim interface. From here, players can fiddle with three key aspects of their Sims. sexual orientations:

  • Their Sim’s primary gender of attraction
  • Whether their Sim is open to exploring interactions with other genders
  • What genders their Sim is interested in exploring attraction with

Currently, the feature only supports biological binary genders, the natural male and female gender expressions that have been in the Sims franchise since its inception. However, in an effort to further endorse the belief that gender is a human construct and that countless other genders exist outside of the natural male and female designations, EA has vowed to ‘expand this to include additional gender identities that we don’t have at this time.’

https://www.ea.com/games/the-sims/the-sims-4/news/sexual-orientation-in-the-sims-4

For players who don’t want to use this new feature, though, the feature is toggleable, and the options associated therewith can be ignored. However, EA made their stance on the matter unequivocally clear: ‘While we try to give players the option to toggle certain gameplay features, LGBTQIA+ identities are a fact of life and not a toggle to be switched on and off.’

At what point do we decide that The Sims is no longer focused on what players expect from the game after so many years? Why is EA prioritizing inclusivity over gameplay functionality and releasing packs that actually work? The Sims is a game that I, for one, play to get away from reality, not to be bombarded with it.

In other Sims news, we are really close to the release of The Sims 4 High School Years, the first expansion pack for the game in over a year. We’ve already seen the features of the pack, though, and to no one’s surprise, it’s as empty as the other recent packs. I cannot wait for Paralives to enter the life simulation market.

EA Drops the First The Sims 4 Expansion in Over a Year

We haven’t even properly sunk our teeth into the wonders of Moonwood Mill and the newly released Werewolves pack for The Sims 4 and already EA is dropping another game-changer. Prepare to live out likely the worst years of your life, but on your own terms in The Sims!

The Sims 4 DOWNLOAD

The trailer for the Sims 4: High School Years went live over on EA’s official social media channels recently, and it came as a massive shock to any and all who play this life simulation gem. In the trailer, we see a classic expression of the North American high school experience, complete with cheerleaders, promposals, and various cliques.

While EA and Maxis have already laid the groundwork for a lot of this content with packs like Get Together – which introduced clubs and, well, getting together –  and My Wedding Stories, there’s a lot in the trailer that a lot of us didn’t quite expect.

For starters, it seems that your teenage Sims can now sneak out of windows that previously didn’t open, provided you place a trellis next to the window for them to descend from. We also saw what looks to be an actual interactive in-game social media function.

The biggest surprise of all, however, was a high school building that you can finally actually interact with and enter. Gone are the days of teen sims getting into a random bus and heading off of the Sims 4 set to go and learn all they’ll need for The Sims 4: University.

I am a long-time critic of EA and specifically The Sims 4. This game seems to have been rushed into production and the early years were the epitome of work-in-progress. If you don’t remember, the first version of the The Sims 4 base game didn’t even have pools. Over the years, EA have released many a game pack, expansion pack, stuff pack, and of course the highly polarizing kits, but the game has still lacked any significant gameplay mechanics for teens.

The imminent release of High School Years will change this as your teenage Sims now get to have lives of their own. Whether you want to live your dream as the star quarterback of Copperdale High, or simply spend your Sims teenage years discovering their unique identity, it’s incredible to finally have those options.

While there is much excitement within the Sims community about the new High School Years expansion pack, there’s still a dark foreboding cloud over EA. The Sims 4: Dine Out is still a broken pack, we still experience way too many routing issues with My Wedding Stories, and many Simmers still can’t see their Werewolves once they transform. The biggest concern surrounding High School Years then, is will the pack actually work? Or is it yet another unfinished money grab by the Electronic Arts corporate machine?

We’ll have to wait till July 28 to find out. In the meantime, why not refresh your memory on the release of the Sims 4: Werewolves?

Run wild with Werewolves in The Sims 4

Werewolves were a massive part of the Sims 3 Supernatural. Ever since the team brought out the Vampires Game Pack for The Sims 4, we’ve been baying at the moon periodically and waiting patiently for werewolves to join the list of occult species we can play with. Finally, it’s happened. Introducing the Werewolves Game Pack! Why combine two occult species often affiliated with one another in one pack when you can sell each separately?

The Sims 4 DOWNLOAD

The Werewolves Game Pack introduces a brand new world; Moonwood Mill. We know how it goes with new worlds in The Sims 4, though, and this one doesn’t deviate from the norm either. Expect the usual five-lot layout with tons of unroutable terrain and gameplay logistics that make absolutely no sense.

Yes – by this, I mean you should fully expect to see Judith Ward strolling confidently through the ‘hidden’ dimly-lit world of Moonwood Mill. Let’s face facts, you know this new secret location where you’re supposed to be fully immersed in the fantasy of getting to grips with your Werewolf nature is definitely on Nancy Landgraab’s morning running route.

Whereas werewolves in The Sims 3 were a life state and not much else, The Sims 4 has put a refreshing spin on this latest occult species. Picture the wolf pack from Twilight, complete with loads of denim and the occasional gingham or chequered fabric. Add in a few really edgy haircuts and piercings reminiscent of a modern gothic movement, and you have Moonwood Mill.

Even though the werewolves themselves look more feline than canine, the ability to paint their fur like you can with pets is game-changing. The new werewolf interactions are also really immersive, as long as random townies don’t saunter past while you’re raging and running wild.

In terms of CAS, the masculine frame has once again been somewhat overlooked, but the few items of clothing we did get are perfect for the rustic, edgy vibe of the new world. The same can be said for the build & buy mode items, which all scream shabby-chic.

If you have sorely missed werewolf-based gameplay in The Sims, this is the pack for you. If not, check out our list of the ten best Sims 4 packs to get the most gameplay bang for your buck.

The 10 best expansion packs for The Sims 4

The Sims 4 is easily the most intuitive and interactive game in The Sims franchise. This game has changed a lot of core concepts from the original trilogy if you will. However, the expansions themselves are different. When I was still hooked on The Sims 3, I’d have said that you can play just as meaningful a game without any expansions as you could with them. I didn’t need stuff packs because I had The Sims Resource and custom content.

But the expansion packs for The Sims 4 hit differently. Now, we have entire cultures, new experiences, and all-new interactions and gameplay options like laundry that actually gets dirty and a full-on town mystery to solve interactively. Sims 4 is so much more of a holistic and well-rounded experience with expansion packs, and below, we’re going to break down the 10 best packs to invest your hard-earned money in.

The Sims 4: Seasons

It’s pointless leaving the absolute best for last when anyone who has ever played any era of the Sims franchise knows that The Sims isn’t The Sims without Seasons. Seasons is an absolute must-have expansion pack and is well worth the price tag it carries.

You’ll experience near-realistic weather conditions specific to current in-game seasons and neighborhood climates and see how the varied temperatures impact your Sims. There are a lot of ‘living’ packs out by now, but each of them expands on the various kinds of lifestyles your Sims can lead. Why not immerse yourself in a life in the big city? Nowhere is this statement more true than in the titular city, San Myshuno.

No authentic city experience would be complete without occasional drama at the hands of the neighbors down the hall. Make new best friends or gripe about the noisy parties and occasionally rowdy citizens of this unique new world.

Did someone say pets? Well, no, not exactly as we remember it from The Sims 3 Pets. But at least with this pack, you can add a furry friend to your Sim’s household. Use the new life state in CAS to create, color, and customize your perfect pet. Alternatively, head to the phone or the nearest computer and adopt a pet in need of a loving home.

There’s nothing nobler than dedicating your Sim’s life to creatures in need. Work as a vet or take on the responsibility of running a pet clinic and become the town’s favorite animal doctor. Do everything from major canine or feline surgery to removing the odd tick.

The Sims 4 announces May/June Roadmap

The Sims 4 team released a roadmap for content to be delivered during May and June. As exciting as it is to see new updates from The Sims 4 team, some would argue that it’s getting more and more difficult to keep getting excited only to be presented with overpriced kits and game packs that hardly contain anything truly new.

The Sims 4 DOWNLOAD

The roadmap, teased by images on The Sims 4’s official Twitter page, seems to heavily feature a strong nocturnal theme. The Sims 4 even changed the classic plumbob reflected on their social media pages to a neon, almost futuristic style plumbob. The teasers also featured the hint’ Lights out,’ leading some to speculate we might be getting some kind of Sims 2 Nightlife/ Sims 3 Late Night-esque content. From the teaser, it’s evident that we’re getting two new kits and one new game pack over the next two or so months.

So what can we expect in these new kits? Well, the catchphrases that accompanied the two kit teasers are ‘Chic Nights Out’ and ‘Cozy Nights In.’ The prevailing opinion within the Sims community here is that they’ll both most likely be CAS kits. We might get some outdoor furniture here and there or a light sprinkling of decor. But they’ll both most likely be CAS items.

The game pack’s slogan is ‘Go Wild.’ Cryptic, it definitely is not. However, the Sims 4 official website comes with its own teasers. Here, you’ll see the phrase ‘Stay up with the Sims’ followed by ‘Step into the moonlight and explore who you are after dark.’ Werewolves. That’s the prevailing opinion amongst Sims 4 CC creators, players, and Game Changers. Werewolves. It almost sounds obvious, and they’re one of the only occult life states within the franchise that hasn’t made it into the Sims 4 yet.

Honest opinion: It’s time for the Sims 5. The Sims 4 is the longest-running game in the franchise, and it’s become evident that we aren’t getting the Create-a-World tool, cars, or open-world mechanics that we’ve been asking for. So maybe it’s time to stop distracting us with overpriced kits and try and deliver the experience we’ve been missing from previous games in the next major title.

If we do get new items of some sort in one of the new kits, here’s how to rotate furniture in Sims 4 in three easy ways!
