Cities Skylines 2 confirms that its DLC causes the game to stop working

The disaster of Cities Skylines 2 seems to have no end, this time with the DLC breaking the base game and with weeks ahead until it’s fixed.

Making video games is very difficult. We are aware of that. Sometimes things go wrong, or even terribly wrong. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t occasions when one should stop and reflect on what they are doing. Because when a video game is more known for its problems than anything else, there is something fundamentally wrong. Like in the case of Cities Skylines II.

Cities Skylines II recently released its first paid DLC. The problem is that, following the footsteps of the main game, it has been an absolute disaster. And in trying to fix it, they have only made it worse. A change in the game has caused almost fatal visual glitches, making it unplayable. According to the studio behind the game, Colossal Order, the fix will take at least three weeks. In the meantime, players are left with their buildings as large cement pillars, similar to tombstones, which basically makes the game unplayable.

All of this is preceded by the fact that their DLC, named Beach Properties, was an absolute disaster. Being an update with very little content and causing performance issues in the game, at least one positive thing could be said about it: it worked. Something that is no longer the case due to the solution sought by the studio.

Due to the disappointment of the fans, Colossal Order decided to refund the money to all those who purchased the DLC, make it free and apologize to their audience. By removing it from the game, they have caused a chain reaction that has made the game, de facto, unplayable. Much to the dismay of their fans.

Unfortunately, this is not new for Cities Skylines 2. It was released last October with many performance issues and giving the feeling that it was a game that wasn’t even finished. This led to very negative reviews and numerous complaints from players, which led Colossal Order to promise that they would fix it all. Something that not only has not happened, but seems to be getting worse and worse. This should make them stop for a moment and find out what is causing all these problems with their otherwise extremely promising game.

Cities Skylines 2 has released such a bad DLC that they will refund everyone who has suffered because of it.

Putting the free DLC within the game and starting a campaign to refund all the money collected for it is no small feat: €9.99 for each purchase.

On March 25th, Cities Skylines 2, which is a game that had not been particularly well received by the public, released a DLC called Beach Properties that included several buildings, right on the beach. In theory, everything seemed fine, but in reality, this additional content was poor and rushed. And after apologizing a thousand times, Colossal Order has done the right thing.

That is, putting the free DLC inside the game and starting a campaign to refund all the money raised by it. It’s not little: 9.99 euros for each purchase. In addition, the studio, which has emphasized how disappointed it is with itself (“You trusted and in return, we have failed you,” they say), has postponed all the additional content it had prepared for this year until 2025.

Or rather, we should put an asterisk: at least until 2025. For now, the delay of ‘Bridges and ports’, the upcoming DLC, is indefinite, and it is possible that the game (and with it, probably, the saga) will be considered dead if it doesn’t progress. And meanwhile, the console versions of the game are still planned for the coming months, but there is no further news about it. What a mess!

For now, Colossal Order seems to be more focused on addressing this identity crisis and bad press by adding more free content for the Definitive Edition, which, however, will not receive a partial refund because it apparently seems complicated. The community, on the other hand, will play a key role in the future, as they want to question every step of the way to ensure they don’t make the same mistakes again. Will ‘Cities Skylines 2’ be a story of redemption or, as the ranchera song says, are they already dead… no one has warned them?
