We already know what Spider-Man 2 is about: brutal story trailer at Comic-Con

Marvel Spider-Man 2 is shown at Comic-Con to give us all the clues about its story, hinting at a complex and tasty narrative

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of the most anticipated games of the year. And not without reason. Marvel’s Spider-Man is a fabulous game that, despite being an open world, knew how to perfectly combine the combat and stealth phases with the spectacular movement that is expected of a character like Spider-Man. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, on the other hand, knew how to expand the formula, taking it to a more intimate terrain in the narrative while emphasizing more aggressive mechanics in combat, giving a little twist to the formula that made it even more enjoyable than possible, apart from the pleasure of moving through the streets of Manhattan.

Now Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, released at the Comic-Con that is being held in California these days, offers us its story trailer where we get a glimpse of what to expect from the game at the narrative level. While it is true that it does not seem that many things are clarified, fans of the first game, and especially fans of the character, will have noticed that there are many threads that hint that this is not exactly going to be a short game or without conflict.

As we already know, in the game we will embody both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, with a particularity. Now Peter Parker will have the symbiote suit, which will give him a new set of powers. Something that seems to be very imbricated in the plot, as we can see in the trailer, with the concern of MJ, and the fact that Harry Osborn and his father, Norman Osborn, seem to have something to do with the symbiote. Considering that the trailer has confirmed that Venom will appear, and the developers confirmed in the past that Eddie Brocks will not appear in the video game, but Eddie seems concerned about his son’s condition, it’s not too hard to predict who Venom may become in this new iteration of the Spider-Man story.

Similarly, it seems that Miles Morales will have his own problems to deal with. While he will have to deal with the threat posed by the symbiote and deal with his friend and mentor being under its influence, a villain from the first game reappears: Mr. Negative. Which, as those who played Marvel’s Spider-Man know, is guilty of killing Miles’ father and almost killing him and his mother as well. So hopefully there will be at least some sort of closure in that area.

But we can’t skip what happens at the beginning of the trailer itself either. Suffering an attack from what looks like Grizzly, a supervillain who is a relatively unknown wrestling wrestler who after losing his legs got an exoskeleton that gave him superhuman strength plus a questionable grizzly bear costume, a brief gameplay scene gives way to what looks like it will be the other major villain of the story. Kraven The Hunter. A truly classic villain, who is going to get his own movie soon, who while he has relatively little screen time in this story trailer compared to Venom and the symbiote in general, will hopefully be of notable importance, as he was the star of the game’s first trailer.

With all these threads, it’s easy to imagine where the story of this Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be heading. Kraven is a hunter. Symbiote is, if not a prey, at least an object of desire; one that also, in the purest Faustian realm, can offer powers beyond what is imaginable to mere mortals. And both Spider-Man, like Harry Osborn, have an extremely troubled relationship with their father figures that make them always looking for a way to redeem themselves in their face, which makes them easy prey for a symbiote. Something that we have already seen many times in the comic, which always works, and that it is difficult that in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 they are not able to give it a new interesting twist, now, by also involving Harry Osborn and Miles Morales at the same time.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will arrive on October 20 of this year exclusively for PlayStation 5. It is expected to arrive on PC at some point in the future, as did the previous two games, but nothing has been confirmed. The next Insomniac Games game after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is already in development and it is Marvel’s Wolverine; a game with no release date and which have not yet transcended more details, but in which we will embody Wolverine, of the X-Men. And which we hope to see, even as a wink, in this long-awaited Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Heartbreak for GTA San Andreas Fans as Rockstar Shuts It Down

A group of entrepreneurs decided to open a Cluckin’ Bell and a Burger Shot, the fictional restaurants of ‘GTA: San Andreas’ for a few days. The problem was that neither Rockstar nor Take Two had a clue.

The plan was perfect: taking advantage of San Diego Comic-Con, one of the places with the highest number of attendees in the world this weekend (and undoubtedly with the most video game players in its ranks), a group of entrepreneurs decided to open a Cluckin’ Bell and a Burger Shot, the fictional restaurants from ‘GTA: San Andreas,’ for a few days. The problem was that neither Rockstar nor Take Two had any idea… And for whatever reason, they didn’t take it well.

Failin’ Bell

The situation isn’t new: last year, the same organizers opened a Cluckin’ Bell before Rockstar’s legal services noticed. It was meticulously crafted, filled with references to GTA, but it lasted only as long as the five days of the convention, and no one found out who was behind it. This year, unfortunately for gamers, they noticed very quickly.

The restaurant Smokin J’s BBQ and Boyworldwide, a fashion brand from Las Vegas, had teamed up again after a small national tour to give another nod to ‘GTA: San Andreas’ and, at the same time, make more money during a weekend when everything in San Diego, from the shabbiest taco stand to the themed ‘Sonic’ restaurant, cashes in big time. After receiving a cease and desist order, they had no choice but to shut down.

Well, in fact, they will: next weekend, they will open the Cluckin’ Bell with a different name, “Don’t Cluckin’ Tell,” presumably to try to cover the expenses of the pop-up that never was. Although it hurts all of us, the truth is that Rockstar‘s position is understandable: nobody likes others to profit from their work, after all.

The good part? They’ve given them a golden idea to promote ‘GTA VI,’ if the studio wants to take advantage of it. They just need to bring out all the merchandise they have, a couple of Cluckin’ Bell aprons, and embrace the fans. And this time, without the need to shut it down prematurely.

Where and when is Comic-Con?

There are thousands of Comic-Cons around the world (there’s one in Madrid, for example), but only one has truly earned the title: San Diego Comic-Con. It began in 1970 with just 500 attendees and now gathers 130,000 people daily at the San Diego Convention Center at the end of July. The exact dates are always announced a year in advance, but to give you an idea, in 2023, it will start on July 20 and run until July 23.

Are they just panels?

Some people believe, because that’s all we hear about, that Comic-Con is only about the panels presented by studios and distributors in Hall H. But that is actually the least important aspect, especially in a year like this when most of them are skipping it due to the ongoing writers’ strike (and likely the actors’ strike as well).

Comic-Con consists of four main areas. First, there are the conference rooms, which are numerous and spread across the upper floors. In these rooms, you can attend twenty to thirty talks simultaneously, ranging from nostalgic discussions about niche TV shows to the latest updates in Spider-Man comic book line, with the opportunity to have a chat with your favorite author afterwards.

The second area is the hall, where you’ll find various booths, from film production companies to local comic book stores. It’s the place where you can gather as many freebies as possible, discover valuable vintage comics worth thousands of dollars, get autographs from lesser-known celebrities (for a fee), and stand in queues even if you’re not sure why. There’s likely to be a famous author, a giveaway, or a contest at the end of it all. This is what we understand as a comic convention in Spain, but on an overwhelmingly grand scale.

The third area is the off-sites, which are located outside the main Comic-Con venue. Here, companies promote their TV shows and movies by setting up various experiences such as escape rooms, zombie escapes, virtual reality adventures, or surprise encounters with actors. In the year I attended, for example, you could enjoy burgers from ‘Bob’s Burgers’ alongside the voice cast or step into ‘The Good Place’ experience.

The fourth aspect is everything that happens outside the convention itself. San Diego undergoes a transformation, offering a plethora of entertainment options. You can find themed parties, stand-up comedy shows, Conan O’Brien recordings, film screenings, trivia games, and much more. During Comic-Con, it’s challenging to resist the temptation to stay up all night and sleep becomes a luxury!

You have convinced me, how do I buy the ticket for 2024?

Getting tickets for Comic-Con is not an easy task. With 130,000 people attending, around 300,000 end up being left out. There is only one day and one hour to purchase tickets, and you better be alert because once they’re sold out, that’s it. It’s a matter of luck to secure tickets on your own. It’s often best to join a group of around fifty people in a ticket-buying group (search online for options) to increase your chances. Each person can purchase tickets for up to four people, but simply entering the process does not guarantee success.

Once you have tickets for the desired days (Saturday being the most crowded and Sunday known for discounts), it’s time to find a hotel. However, be prepared for inflated prices in the hotels designated by the organization. Alternatively, you can choose to stay outside the city and commute by bus each day. The cost for attending from Thursday to Sunday will add up to $275, but trust me, if you enjoy these kinds of events, you should experience it at least once in your life. Yes, I know the flight costs can be significant. But hey, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, haven’t you heard?

I got them, give me some basic advice

Very important: the food sold at the convention is expensive and of poor quality (surprising, right? In the United States!). Once you step out of the convention, you’ll find delicious taco stands, supermarkets, and restaurants to suit all budgets. A mediocre McDonald’s burger will cause you less gastrointestinal distress than anything you might eat there. Oh, and don’t forget to stay hydrated. It’s extremely – I mean, extremely – essential, and we don’t want any health scares.

If you’re attending alone, don’t think you’re the only one or that people will find you odd. People are there to make friends, chat, meet like-minded individuals, and learn about pop culture customs from your country. It’s important to be able to speak English, of course, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point. Oh, and don’t join never-ending queues that don’t seem to move. They truly are never-ending and, indeed, they don’t budge (I experienced this with a queue that led to a ‘Demolition Man’-themed customized Taco Bell).

Finally, don’t stress out. Create a schedule for yourself. Determine which events you want to attend, what items you want to buy (there are hundreds of exclusive collectibles), and where you want to go. In fact, create two or even three schedules, just in case things don’t go as planned. If you can’t make it to the panel on the 50th anniversary of ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ perhaps you can attend the retrospective of ‘The Princess Bride’ or the Batman‘s new releases presentation.

So, the next time someone says that Comic-Con is only about presentations and that nobody will go now that everyone has backed out, you can look at them and say, “Oh, you innocent soul.”
