The gaming community has witnessed various situations of review bombing, where the ratings of a game on platforms like Steam are drastically affected by negative reviews.
However, the studio Seed Sparkle Lab is facing an unusual phenomenon with its title Starsand Island, which is currently in early access. Instead of unfavorable reviews, the team has detected an anomalous amount of excessively positive reviews that the developers consider suspicious.
Too many compliments could be a disguised attack
Starsand Island is a cozy-style game that offers players a relaxing experience on an island full of opportunities for exploration and farming.
Despite having an 86% positive review rate on Steam, the Seed Sparkle Lab team has pointed out that many of these ratings seem to be artificially generated, possibly by artificial intelligence, and have been published suspiciously quickly after minimal gameplay time.
In a statement published on Steam, the team explained that they initially thought the flood of positive comments was a sign of recognition for their work but soon noticed irregularities: “Some comments were posted after a very short playtime and were shared almost at the same time.” This led them to question whether it was an attack disguised as praise.
Despite the fact that Seed Sparkle Lab could benefit from this phenomenon in terms of visibility, the team has expressed their discontent with the situation and has called out to the person or entity behind these reviews: “Please stop. Let us play our game in peace.” The situation continues to evolve, and the avalanche of unusual reviews may persist, raising concerns about the integrity of the feedback the title receives.
