The gaming community has witnessed various situations of review bombing, where the ratings of a game on platforms like Steam are drastically affected by negative reviews.

However, the studio Seed Sparkle Lab is facing an unusual phenomenon with its title Starsand Island, which is currently in early access. Instead of unfavorable reviews, the team has detected an anomalous amount of excessively positive reviews that the developers consider suspicious.

Too many compliments could be a disguised attack

Starsand Island is a cozy-style game that offers players a relaxing experience on an island full of opportunities for exploration and farming.

Despite having an 86% positive review rate on Steam, the Seed Sparkle Lab team has pointed out that many of these ratings seem to be artificially generated, possibly by artificial intelligence, and have been published suspiciously quickly after minimal gameplay time.

In a statement published on Steam, the team explained that they initially thought the flood of positive comments was a sign of recognition for their work but soon noticed irregularities: “Some comments were posted after a very short playtime and were shared almost at the same time.” This led them to question whether it was an attack disguised as praise.

Despite the fact that Seed Sparkle Lab could benefit from this phenomenon in terms of visibility, the team has expressed their discontent with the situation and has called out to the person or entity behind these reviews: “Please stop. Let us play our game in peace.” The situation continues to evolve, and the avalanche of unusual reviews may persist, raising concerns about the integrity of the feedback the title receives.

The creators of Escape from Tarkov are not intimidated: in response to the threats of review bombing, they say to go ahead

The highly anticipated release of Escape from Tarkov in its 1.0 version is scheduled for November 15, marking a milestone after years of development and beta testing. This event is expected to be a crucial moment in the game’s history, as it will allow players to access a complete version on the largest PC platform, Steam. However, the developers at Battlestate Games, led by Nikita Buyanov, are aware of the potential negative criticisms that may arise, known as review bombing, against business decisions and gameplay issues.

They don’t care about review bombing

Over the years, Escape from Tarkov has faced performance issues and the persistent presence of cheaters, leading to discontent among users. If these issues are not resolved by the launch, they could negatively impact the game’s reviews. Buyanov has stated that they do not have a specific strategy to address review bombing, as their priority is to provide end-game content and satisfy loyal players who have invested thousands of hours in the title.

The gaming community has already expressed its concern about a possible avalanche of criticism, considering that these platforms allow users to both celebrate the works they enjoy and attack those that do not meet their expectations. Buyanov, addressing these concerns, stated: “If they want to bombard, let them bombard.” The statement reflects confidence that the gaming experience and the changes that will be implemented in this version will be enough to reconcile fans with the final product.

On November 15, during an event known as “wipe,” users will start over from scratch. This reset could, regardless of the criticism, be seen as an opportunity to revitalize the game and attract new players at a crucial time for its development.

The Witcher was never close to being canceled, according to one of its main actresses

The recent departure of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher series has generated a wave of concern among fans, who fear for the continuity of the production. However, the arrival of Liam Hemsworth as his replacement has ensured that the series will continue its course, despite the controversy surrounding this change.

Those who work on the series never feared for it

Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer, expressed her confidence in the continuity of the series, stating that she always had the certainty that “we would all continue.” For Chalotra, the deep love for the original material has been a key factor in the project’s persistence. “I was excited to see where Yennefer would go,” she added, highlighting her optimism despite the challenges presented.

The producers of The Witcher have defended the change of actor by comparing Geralt of Rivia to iconic figures from other franchises, such as James Bond and Batman, noting that his role can be portrayed by different actors over time. This perspective has been well received by the cast members, who have also positively commented on Hemsworth’s integration into the team, suggesting a collaborative and welcoming environment.

Despite this bet on the future, a portion of the fandom has reacted with discontent, interpreting Cavill’s departure as a failure for Netflix. This has been reflected in the negative ratings of the series on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, where episodes of “review-bombing” have been reported. With the fourth season underway and a fifth already announced, the future of The Witcher seems uncertain, awaiting the public’s reactions once the new installments are released.

A year ago, the last episode of the best Star Wars series aired, which received a lot of unfair criticism

Everything related to Star Wars is an immediate success, as long as you don’t touch the jedis. That is a tremendously dangerous minefield that is best left alone. No one wants to see a twist on what is already known, and even expanding what is already known is often met with skepticism by some fans who are quite aggressive about their franchise. Especially if it includes talking about jedis who were women or non-Caucasian.

This is something that one of the most interesting Star Wars series in recent years experienced firsthand. Star Wars: The Acolyte wanted to do something different, looking into one of the richest and most vibrant eras of the Star Wars universe, with an impressive cast, but fans hated it. Why? That is a good question, because it doesn’t seem to be that the series was bad at all.

Jedis when being a Jedi was not yet strange

Set at the end of the High Republic era, approximately 100 years before The Phantom Menace, the series takes place in a time of peace. There is relative stability in the galaxy and the Jedi are still at their peak, although all of that is about to change.

The series begins with Osha, a former padawan who abandoned her training as a Jedi due to an internal turmoil regarding her connection to the Force, who reunites with her Jedi master, named Sol, to investigate a series of terrible crimes. Something that will lead them to discover a terrible truth: the Sith order, which was thought to have disappeared from the galaxy, is still standing. And it has a deep connection with both of them.

From here on, the series is a remarkable blend of detective story, kung-fu, and a classic Star Wars movie. Resulting in a very fresh and different mix that makes it much more interesting than most works derived from the franchise.

Another reason why it is interesting is because of its casting. With particularly rich characters and vivid interactions, it particularly highlights Master Sol played by Lee Jung-jae, known in the West for his role as Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game. Thus demonstrating his versatility by excellently portraying not only a completely different role from the one we know him for, but also doing so in a language that is not his own.

A review bombing for woke

However, as we have said, the reception of the series was less than positive. There were legitimate criticisms, with many people who genuinely did not like it for various reasons. This happens even with the best series. But there was also a group of people who felt offended by certain aspects of the series that should not be problematic for anyone at all: that its main actors, who were also the most prominent jedi, were women and people of color.

The lead actress, Amandla Stenberg, is of African descent. The lead actor, Lee Jung-jae, is Korean. Adding to that the fact that they are jedis ignited the fuse for many fans who saw it as an attack, considering the series as woke, even calling it The Wokelyte, initiating a process of review bombing and harassment where they tried by all means to bury the series. This resulted in the perception and reception of the series, after its first few weeks, being absolutely terrible.

Something that contrasts with its original reception. During its first five days, it achieved 11.1 million views, becoming the most-watched series on Disney+ in 2024 so far. Critics also reached a favorable consensus about the series. And only after the start of the review bombing with accusations of being a woke series did the idea begin to spread that it was bad or a failure of some kind.

A series that deserves another chance

Cancelled in August 2024, it seems unlikely that we will see a new season of The Acolyte. Being yet another victim of the cultural wars initiated by far-right individuals, too sensitive for a multicultural and inclusive reality.

That doesn’t change the fact that it is still possible to see the first and only season of the series. A unique series within the Star Wars universe, both for its tone and the era it visits, which, while it may not be to everyone’s taste, certainly deserved a chance. Because whether people like it or not, The Acolyte had many virtues that make it worth revisiting.

With the premiere of the new Superman movie directed by James Gunn, which marks the beginning of the new DC Universe, a considerable controversy has erupted among fans. Many of them, especially followers of the SnyderVerse, have expressed their resistance to the project even before its release, questioning the creative decisions and launching negative critiques on social media platforms.

They want a much brighter Superman

David Corenswet, who embodies the iconic superhero, has expressed his desire to present Superman in a more optimistic and retro way, an approach that has caused adverse reactions among a part of the DCU fandom. Corenswet, in previous statements, noted that while he admired the dark approach of Henry Cavill’s version, he wished for his interpretation to be more uplifting. This statement has been used by some detractors to delegitimize his performance and the film in general.

Despite the smear campaign, Gunn has reacted calmly to this controversy. In recent interviews, he has indicated that it is normal for there to be controversies surrounding his projects and has stated that any attempt to sabotage the film will not prevent Superman from likely performing well at the box office, scheduled for July 11.

The fact that fans of the SnyderVerse have initiated actions such as “review bombing” and the spreading of spoilers has not significantly impacted the overall enthusiasm for the movie, which is expected to become a resounding box office success. However, the persistent resistance from some sectors of the fandom underscores the polarization that has marked the DC universe in recent years, suggesting that this conflict of visions regarding the future of the Kryptonian hero is just beginning.

Gearbox Software has given a new boost to its Borderlands saga with the imminent arrival of Borderlands 4, scheduled for September 12. To spark interest among players, the company has decided to offer Borderlands 2 for free on Steam until June 8, after which the game will return to its regular price of 29.99 euros. This initiative gives new users the opportunity to dive into the looter-shooter universe that has defined the franchise.

Borderlands 2 has recently suffered because of Take-Two

Despite the 93% positive ratings for the game overall, Borderlands 2 has recently faced a review bombing phenomenon, receiving only 23% favorable opinions in the last 30 days. This behavior originated after a video by a popular YouTuber who mentioned changes in Take-Two’s End User License Agreement, suggesting that the company had begun collecting sensitive user information.

This video also echoed possible restrictions that the EULA could impose, such as the prohibition of interfering with the experience of other players. However, these practices were already part of the registration requirements on the SHiFT platform, created by Gearbox to offer additional features and in-game rewards. There is no concrete evidence that an active hunt for modifications is taking place, but the community has quickly reacted by starting a review bombing campaign.

2K Games has also launched a promotion that reduces the price of other titles and DLC from the saga, with the free offer of Borderlands 2 as the best card to attract new players before the release of Borderlands 4. The decision seems to be part of a broader strategy to revitalize interest in the franchise at a critical moment in its evolution.
