10 Best Alternative Apps to Tinder

Try these Tinder alternatives to jump-start your love life.

Tinder and its unique way of connecting people have taken the world by storm since its release. Tinder has become well known as a hookup app for more casual encounters, although in essence, it is a dating app at its core. Many individuals have found meaningful connections and relationships on Tinder.

But maybe you’re looking for Tinder alternatives? While Tinder is available on Android and iOS platforms, maybe it isn’t the app for you. There are many similar apps to Tinder that you can consider.

Why Choose an Alternative to Tinder?

Tinder works hard to keep the app fresh and interesting for users. Whether it is by introducing 48-hour ‘Vibes’ events, or features that protect the LQBTQ users, they keep improving their offers along the way. Unfortunately, the push to monetize the app has caused many people to look for Tinder alternatives. The premium version does have many added benefits, but some want a simple dating app without the hassle of paying for it.

It is not uncommon to get bored of Tinder. Maybe the ‘swipe right’ system is no longer as entertaining as it used to be, and the push to get the premium version can be annoying. Or perhaps you’re no longer getting matches, or the matches you do get end up as disasters. No matter the reason, you can take a break from Tinder and explore some of these other dating apps that some would argue are better than Tinder.

Similar Dating Apps Better Than Tinder

Maybe you’re sick of Tinder, or maybe you’re just wondering if there are any better alternatives out there. Luckily for you, Tinder has a lot more competition now than it used to. If you’re looking for love and a long-term relationship potential dates, or maybe just a meetup, try these Tinder alternatives.

Hinge

If you’re looking for a more meaningful relationship, give Hinge a shot. It claims to have a more thoughtful approach to matchmaking than Tinder or other alternatives. Unlike other dating apps, Hinge uses your Facebook profile to connect you with others, such as friends of friends. These quality matches can be a good option, if you’re nervous about sending that first message to a complete stranger online. But if you’re not into connecting with mutual friends through Facebook, Hinge now offers the option to simply log in with your phone number. Although it’s a free app to use, you can upgrade to a preferred membership with a monthly fee for additional features.

Coffee Meets Bagel

Coffee Meets Bagel promises to be a simpler, less time-consuming dating app. Instead of manually going through matches or swiping right, Coffee Meets Bagel uses an algorithm to match you with users who meet your basic criteria or share your interests. The app will even help you break the ice with conversation starters. It’s also LGBTQ-friendly—no need to use a separate app! A premium option is available, too, if you’re looking for more information about your matches or are having issues with ghosting.

Better yet, the app features unlimited messaging, so chat away! If you want to receive better matches, fill out as many personality questionnaires as possible. Like many other alternative dating apps, you can choose to upgrade your account for a fee.

Bumble

This free dating app has over 20 million users. It differs from many other options out there in that only women can initiate contact, and men only have 24 hours to respond. Although you might match with fewer numbers on Bumble than other apps, the matches are considered to be better quality, so you’ll likely experience fewer corny pick-up lines.

Like Hinge, you can now log in with a phone number instead of a Facebook account, if you wish. Even better, Bumble is more than just a dating app now. It can also help you to make new friends and network in your field with the help of its Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz features. If you’re looking for a dating app that can do more, Bumble is the way to go.

Ship: Dating Matchmaking

Ship: Dating Matchmaking has a fascinating approach to their dating app. Not only can you add your preferences and swipe on any matches received, but you can also allow friends to help with your matchmaking. This means that if you want friends, family or your parents to be involved in choosing your next date, this app is for you.

They can only swipe on matches provided based on the preferences you enter at the start. Once a ‘crew member’ has swiped on a profile they feel matches you; the conversation is opened. However, your crew members will not be able to see your conversations – thankfully. This is one of the best Tinder alternatives.

New Tinder feature aimed to protect LGBTQ users

Tinder will hide LGBTQ user profiles when they visit countries that outlaw same-sex relationships.

Tinder

This new feature from Tinder could help you out if you’re swiping while on vacation.

Tinder will soon alert their LGBTQ users if they are using the app while in a country that criminalizes same-sex relationships. This new feature is called Traveler Alert, and it is expected to roll out in a future update, according to an announcement from Tinder.

Unfortunately, police in these countries often use dating apps like Tinder to find same-sex couples and prosecute them, according to Tinder. This move will hopefully save LGBTQ users from this cruel fate.

Along with alerting users, Tinder will automatically remove their profile from the app while they are in the country. However, users will be able to make their profiles visible if they wish to take the risk.

(function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id))return;js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=’https://embed.playbuzz.com/sdk.js’;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}(document,’script’,’playbuzz-sdk’));

Tinder now allows users to identify their sexual preferences by choosing three of nine categories. They are:
  •  Straight
  • Gay
  • Lesbian
  • Bisexual
  • Asexual
  • Demisexual
  • Pansexual
  • Queer
  • Questioning

These new moves from Tinder are making the app much safer for LGBTQ users, and much for inviting as well.

In the wild world of dating, you are taking enough of a risk just by putting yourself out there, so it’s a good thing that Tinder is putting in more precautions to keep you safe.

Facebook Dating to offer service to connect crushes

Facebook is entering the dating app game, but is the new service worth the privacy risk?

Facebook romance

After the latest Facebook data scandal, the Facebook team now wants to know even more of your personal data. This time, they want to know your crushes.

7

Facebook is introducing a new dating service aptly named “Facebook Dating.” Through the dating app, you can use the feature called “Secret Crush.” If your crush also has Facebook Dating, you can anonymously note that you have a crush on them. If they say they have a crush on you, then the secret is out as the two of you find out about the mutual affection.

How does it work?

You can choose up to nine friends to tell that you want to date them. If your crush doesn’t download Facebook Dating, doesn’t create their own crush list, or doesn’t add you to their list, then they won’t find out you entered their name.

Can I download it now?

As of now, Facebook Dating is not available in the United States. However, it is available in the following countries:

  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Argentina
  • The Philippines
  • Vietnam
  • Singapore
  • Malaysia
  • Laos
  • Brazil
  • Peru
  • Chile
  • Columbia
  • Thailand
  • Bolivia
  • Ecuador
  • Paraguay
  • Uruguay
  • Guyana
  • Suriname

The Facebook team has not announced when the service will go global, but there are plenty of other options in the meantime.

How is this different from Tinder or Bumble?

Tinder match

It seems that the main perk of using this app as opposed to a typical dating service is that this one has access to your Facebook friends. In an app like Tinder, you have to hope that eventually, your crush’s profile will come across your potential swipes for the day.

However, it doesn’t seem like Facebook Dating will give you the opportunity to explore romance beyond your circle of friends. If you want to expand your horizons from just the people you know, it doesn’t seem like Facebook Dating is the dating service for you. Here’s your chance to vote on your favorite:

(function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id))return;js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=’https://embed.playbuzz.com/sdk.js’;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}(document,’script’,’playbuzz-sdk’));

So should I download it?

If you can’t work up the courage to ask out your crush, there isn’t a lot of reason to believe that this app will help you out. It might be a good way to anonymously see if you and your crush do have mutual affection, but that can be figured by going out for coffee.

If you have a crush on someone, it’s in your best interest to work up the stones to ask them yourself. There are plenty of ways to find love that don’t involve Facebook stealing more of your data.

Your complete guide to dating with Bumble

Looking for love? Here’s how to make the most of Bumble.

Bumble

You might know Bumble as that dating app where women make the first move. The women-centric app aims to give users a less sleazy platform for finding dates online — as compared to Tinder, Plenty of Fish, or OK Cupid, that is.

Bumble is a good option for people looking for serious relationships or something more casual. It’s got a relatively equal gender balance, and according to the app’s data, roughly 60% of matches result in a conversation.

While an increasing number of us meet our dates — and potential mates — on the apps, it can be daunting if you’re new to the “beehive.” Below, we’ve put together a guide to getting started on Bumble, plus a look at some of the key features.

How does Bumble work?

Like Tinder, Bumble is all about the swipes. Swipe right on a potential match, left if you’d rather pass. If two users indicate interest, a “connection” is made. From there, you can start sending messages.

For straight daters, only the woman can send the initial message. From there, the man can respond and hopefully, the conversation takes off. With same-sex couples, either person can send the first message after that initial connection is made.

Once that initial message is sent, the recipient has 24 hours to respond, or else the message disappears.

The women-first approach was intended to provide women with a dating app that put them in control of the experience. Other apps, unfortunately, are known for guys sending bulk messages and unsolicited nudes, which really knocks the experience down a few pegs.

Create a Bumble profile

Where you used to need a Facebook account to access Bumble, CEO Whitney Wolfe removed this requirement last year in the wake of the whole Cambridge Analytica debacle.

What should I write in my Bumble profile, anyway?

Look, people already assume that you like going on vacation or eating food.  And on Bumble, you’ve only got 300 characters to package your charm and personality in a way someone else might be into.

A few options:

A rundown of your likes: Unique likes. Not walks on the beach, rather a few things that make you stand out. These ladies have the right idea:

Quotes — a reference to a movie, song, or book can help you cut through the noise and help you find someone who “gets” you. Too obscure and you might isolate potential matches.

Personal statement: here, this line up of dudes have a self-deprecating approach — citing pretentious hobbies, Harry Potter, and adding a little suggestion of vulnerability.

Dating profile photos

things to avoid bumble profile

Picking the right profile pics is tricky. You want to look appealing, but not like you’re trying too hard. Off the bat, you’ll want to make sure that pictures represent who you are in real life. That means things like age, weight, and style should be close to what they can expect when you eventually meet up.

As per Bumble, your first post is your “calling card.” It should be your standout, most attractive pic in the lineup. Here are a few things to include:

  • Smile — Putting your best face forward means projecting warmth and approachability — so, smile! Most people are hoping they find someone happy, with a good sense of humor.
  • Action — a pic or two where you’re running a race, skateboarding, skiing, whatever activity you do can reveal more about your personality than a pouty selfie.
  • Recent — Again, needs to look like you. If your images are 10 years old or 20 pounds in one direction or another, your date is in for an IRL surprise.
  • Be the focus — choose pictures where you are front and center. Definitely no bridesmaid/groomsmen shots, group dinners, you get the idea. Sure, maybe you want to prove that you have friends, but it’s better to stick to images where you’re the only one in the foreground.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering — the magic number when it comes to how many pictures to include is apparently six. That’s enough to present a few looks — and contexts — but it’s more highlight reel than your entire feed.

OKCupid did a pretty in-depth study of what makes online dating profile pictures successful back in 2010, but it’s possible some of that has changed since then.

Chatting on Bumble

bumble chat screen

Opening remarks

Oh man… nothing is worse than an inbox full of “heys”. That’s the equivalent of someone “poking you” on Facebook. It’s dumb, pointless, and puts the communications onus on the recipient.

Some people like to open with a cute one-liner or a joke, but not everyone loves this approach. That’s fine.

On the one hand, that creativity can make you stand out, but others might feel pressured to compete by coming up with a wittier response. Which, let’s face it, may slow down the flow of the conversation.

Ask questions

Sounds basic, but when we get nervous, the tendency is to talk about ourselves. As such, remember to ask questions.

Asking a question about something in their profile is probably the safest bet. Sure, it’s a little tired, but that’s because it works.

Plus, asking a question means, they’ll likely hit the ball back — answer, then ask you a question… which — boom, that’s a conversation.

One at a time, though. And keep it simple. Start by asking questions that reveal what kind of food they like, where they’re from, and work up into common interests.

Keep it light

Save the tough conversations for when you’re in a real relationship. Hate to be harsh, but try to stay on the fun, playful side of the conversational spectrum. Flirtatious banter, benign sarcasm, and witty comebacks work best here.

Cut to the chase

Look, it’s good to text a bit before meeting someone outright. But one of the most frustrating things about the online dating scene is the people who use the app to text with no plans for a meeting.

For one, sometimes you have a great rapport with someone via text but not in person, or vice-versa. We all have friends and family that totally suck at texting, but they’re funny, smart, whatever, in person.

Second, texting can get in the way of the actual meeting. Be direct and ask the person if they are interested in going on a date — at a specific time and place. Don’t just say, “Hey, let’s go out sometime” — we all know that’s just code for, “We are never going to meet.”

From there the person can just say “Sure, that sounds great.” Or they’ll give you another time/place that works better or well, say no. In any case — the goal is to establish an initial meeting or find out if there’s a mutual interest.

Is Bumble free?

dating apps

Mostly, yes. You don’t need to enter your CC info to sign up, but there are some in-app purchases that unlock access to better features. Bumble boost is $10 a month and gives you a list of users who “liked” you.

There’s Rematch, which keeps expired matches in your queue for an extra 24 hours, and Busy Bee, which gives you unlimited 24-hour extensions. Basically, if you pay, you can get around some of the rules.

How do I filter Bumble matches?

This past December, Bumble rolled out a new time-saving feature, that limits their pool of potential mates to those with the most “relevant interests.”

That said, the new filters (at least on the dating side) are kind of what you’d expect. Filters include age, height, location, political preferences, relationship type, and astrological sign (you know, the important stuff).

Be prepared for ups and downs

Unfortunately, we live in a world where ghosting — be it at work or in our dating lives — is all too easy.

As such, it helps to prepare for the highs and lows of online dating. Some people will text you for a long time, and you’ll never meet. Others might disappear after a few great dates. But, then, that next person could be this fantastic match. You won’t know unless you swipe, right?

Now that you know how to get started with Bumble, what do you say — maybe it’s time to jump right in and see who you match with.

Still, it’s not so hard. To recap — make sure your pictures look like you, and your bio is short, witty, and representative of you. Keep conversations light and for god’s sake, make plans after a few texts, not a few weeks.

Happy swiping.

What is the best dating app

Looking for love? Here are your best bets.

dating couple

Over the years, it has become increasingly harder to meet new people in person. Most socialization has moved to an online format, and so has dating. But with so many dating apps to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one will help you find that perfect someone. Here are some pros and cons of the most popular dating apps out there.

What is the best dating app?

Tinder

The most talked-about dating app right now, Tinder is particularly popular for its ease and accessibility, while retaining some amount of catfish prevention. In order to make a Tinder account, one has to link their Facebook profile. Of course, someone can make a fake Facebook, but it’s proven to be less likely, given the extra step it takes in doing so (when they can go to a different app without doing this). This almost guarantees a level of authenticity to Tinder users.

However, Tinder is not without its problems. It limits the number of people you can “like” each day, based on how much you are willing to pay for the app. Along with this, your matches are somewhat random (with few preference options), meaning you’re unable to pick and choose who you match with on a given day (unlike other popular free apps, like OkCupid).

eharmony

Another popular and well-known site due to its frequent TV ads, eharmony focuses on matching people together based off similar interest, rather than simply based off geographical location. There is a “free version,” but its functionality is limited to the point where you can’t even message your matches. That being said, if you’re willing to make the payments for it, then you may find their matchmaking algorithm to work for you. Unlike most other dating sites, they do not feature LGBT options in their settings, and instead have a completely separate site, Compatible Partners, dedicated to same-sex demographics using a similar questionnaire and algorithm.

Match.com

One of the few non-free dating sites that has stood the test of time, Match.com is pretty similar to eharmony. They both use questionnaires to try and match similar people together. However, Match.com has LGBT options, a “wink” mechanic (which lets you start conversations without necessarily having anything to say), and lets you create your own matches, rather than being exclusively stuck with the matches it gives you.

CoffeeMeetsBagel

A fast-growing app that puts more of an emphasis on connecting to a few people, rather than swiping through many. Each day, you receive one match that you can swipe or not, and if you connect then you have an 8-day chat room with them. While it’s likely to find someone who is actually willing to talk to you after you’ve matched (an issue some people experience with these apps), the limited window of chat time can make it somewhat less consistent than other apps. Since you only receive one match a day, it can be lackluster without putting money into the app.

OkCupid

OkCupid is essentially the free version of apps like Match.com and eharmony. It focuses on matching you with like-minded individuals based off the questions you answer. It features almost all the same things that Match.com does, though it does require a subscription for some features (such as seeing who has liked you, that you haven’t matched with).

9

PlentyOfFish

“Plenty” is a good description for this app, as it has one of the highest number of users, and is one of the older dating apps still around. Despite this, the interface hasn’t seen many updates over the years. If you’re looking for options, then this app has some benefits for you, as it works similarly to Tinder, but without the necessity for Facebook connectivity. The app itself, however, is littered with ads and difficult to go through compared to others on this list. Probably the least user-friendly of any popular dating app.

10

Grindr & HER

These two are the most popular LGBT-specific dating apps. Grindr is the most popular dating app among gay men, while HER is the most popular dating app marketed towards queer women. Grindr is a low security app that shows profiles in relation to their distance to you. It is optimized for more quick interactions, and primarily seen as an app to meet people in person, rather than to use for full conversations. HER requires Facebook identification and is much more similar to Tinder in its effectiveness.

A popular theory is that free dating apps are more for casual dating, while paid apps tend to have people looking for something more serious. This is, however, not always the case, and you can easily find both types of people on either app type. Your app choice should be more based on functionality and amount of users, rather than what type of people you think will be on them. Your next love could be on any of these services… or just around the corner IRL. Happy dating!
