A new teaser for the upcoming ‘Dragon Age’ raises our hype… and lowers our expectations of getting it soon

They have all their eggs in the basket of ‘Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’ and a new untitled ‘Mass Effect’ about which we know absolutely nothing for now.

BioWare can’t help but spill the beans and share what they’re up to. Perhaps that’s why they announced they were in the midst of a new ‘Dragon Age’ back in 2018. It’s 2023 now, and we’re still being fed on trailers while the game’s anticipation remains sky-high, and the gaming community is buzzing with excitement. After a few months of silence, the studio has released a new trailer… which only suggests that we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.

The age of the dragon feels quite lengthy

These years haven’t been easy for BioWare: the once well-oiled machine has faced problems due to massive employee layoffs and the lackluster success of some of their projects, such as ‘Mass Effect Andromeda’ or ‘Anthem’. It seems like they’ve placed all their hopes on ‘Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’ and a new untitled ‘Mass Effect‘ about which we know absolutely nothing for now.

This new 50-second trailer, celebrating “Dragon Age Day” (apparently, that’s a thing), has basically served to tell us that in the summer of 2024, we’ll get the first major trailer (or at least, a “full reveal,” whatever that means). Essentially, it’s the typical teaser for a trailer that’s been quite common lately, but after six years of waiting for more news.

Alright, it’s not what we expected, but it does have something very good that was almost forbidden for us until now: a date. We don’t know if it’s a date for an imminent release or if it’ll just lead us to another future date. By then, the game will have been in development for nine years, and all we know is that it will focus on Solas as the main antagonist and will be a direct sequel to the previous one, which isn’t common in the franchise. If you’re hoping to get lost for hours in the landscapes of Antiva, you’ll still have time to replay ‘Dragon Age: Inquisition’ before experiencing the saga with next-gen graphics.

Gamescom Unveils Dismal Updates for Fans of Mass Effect and Dragon Age

Bioware is in the news, but not for reason to rejoice: It has laid off about 50 people to “stay competitive”

When things take a turn for the worse, nothing can assure us that things will turn out well. Unfortunately, we live in a capitalist system, and that means if it’s necessary to lay off people to make the numbers work, individuals will be let go. Regardless of their talent, history, or needs. At the end of the day, the numbers are what matter. Cold and harsh. Something that’s not an exception in the gaming industry, and on days like today, the news breaks our hearts a little.

BioWare has announced that they have laid off around 50 people. Being a studio of approximately 300 individuals, this signifies a significant reduction in their workforce, which is not exactly promising for the studio’s future.

Gary McKay, the General Manager of the studio, has clarified in a studio statement the reasons for doing this. According to him, in order to achieve the quality standards they set and to continue growing in a rapidly evolving industry, they need to change to become a more agile and focused studio. This requires them to eliminate around 50 positions within the studio.

However, this reasoning sounds, at the very least, strange, from the moment we’ve learned about some of the positions that have been cut. Although we’ll probably know more in the days to come, we know that writer Mary Kirby, who has been behind the scripts of all three Dragon Age games and the acclaimed Star Wars: The Old Republic, is one of the individuals whose work has been abruptly eliminated.

These are not good news for fans, especially when BioWare has announced a return to the Dragon Age franchise. Announced in 2018 under the name Dragon Age Dreadwolf, with this wave of layoffs and a key figure like Kirby, who has always been integral, being let go, it’s only natural to harbor doubts about the future of the project and the studio. That’s why, even though McKay says they are confident that Dreadwolf will reach its full potential, which is why its release was recently postponed, this decision conveys quite the opposite message, even if unintended.

Delay Turns into Opportunity: Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s Setback Could Lead to a Better Game!

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and although it sounds strange, this can be good news when we are at a time when so many games are broken.

It’s financial results time, which means we can find out more about what’s going on behind the scenes at game studios. One of the latest to release its results has been Electronic Arts, which has allowed us to know which games they plan to release before March 31, 2024, although the most interesting thing has been to discover which games are not going to be released before that date. Because among the games that will be released in the coming months, there are two big absentees: skate and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. And although it may sound strange, it may be good news that BioWare’s new game is delayed.

Although it may sound strange, it may turn out to be good news considering the state in which high-profile video games are coming out in the last few months. Redfall, The Last of Us Part 1 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the latter also from EA, were highly anticipated releases that have been launched with very serious performance and optimization issues that have meant they could not be enjoyed optimally on either PC or consoles at launch. Requiring several more months of baking until they were really finished, these games would have benefited from a delay that would have allowed them to be released in full.

Anyway, this is not something new. We have to remember that Cyberpunk 2077 came out in 2020 and Pokémon Scarlet and Purple came out last year, two equally highly anticipated games that, likewise, didn’t deliver anywhere near the experience gamers expected from them. For that very reason, the delay of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf may turn out to be a blessing hidden in an upset.

In March of this year it was said that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf could be completed from start to finish and that all that was left was to test the gameplay mechanics and bring visual fidelity to its visual form. If so, why is it necessary to wait so long? To polish. To polish a lot. If that’s the reason for it taking longer to come out, that it’s not another Redfall, another The Last of Us Part 1 or another Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, this could be great news that we didn’t know we wanted. Because it’s better for a game to be delayed and we can enjoy it from the first minute than for it to come out broken and we have to wait anyway that they fixed it on the date it would have come out if they had delayed it.
