You, don’t be a ghost

Today, the developers will present an in-depth analysis of the game during the State of Play dedicated to the game. The program is expected to showcase around 20 minutes of new material, as well as comments from creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox. This presentation is highly anticipated not only for the revealing content but also for the promise of new gameplay mechanics that excite fans of the series.

Among the innovations, Ghost of Yotei will incorporate more opportunities for explosions and scenes in hot springs, as well as a narrative that will unfold 300 years after the events of Tsushima. The creators have emphasized the importance of cultural representation and have worked with advisors to ensure that the evolution of the narrative respects Japanese traditions and history, something they themselves acknowledge as crucial after reflecting on their own understanding of the subject.

With the launch just around the corner and today’s event promising more information, fans of Ghost of Tsushima are eager to dive into the new world of Ghost of Yotei, which promises to maintain the same admiration for the aesthetics and samurai combat that made its predecessor a success.

Former Dragon Age developers confirm that they felt manipulated during the development of their last game

The launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been a problematic event, eliciting mixed reactions from the community and severely impacting the sales of the title. As a result, BioWare has been forced to make layoffs, raising questions about the future of the studio and its iconic franchise.

A very questionable move by the management of EA and BioWare

Mark Darrah, former executive director of Dragon Age, revealed in a recent YouTube video that since 2017, after the failure of Mass Effect: Andromeda, EA and the management of BioWare “deprived resources” from the development of The Veilguard. Darrah indicated that this decision resulted in a restructuring that diverted talent and efforts towards Anthem, a project that ended up being a disaster and ultimately led to the dismantling of BioWare Montreal.

According to Darrah, the Dragon Age team began to feel that it did not have the necessary support from BioWare or EA, which culminated in a lack of priorities towards its development. Despite EA’s assurances about the importance of Dragon Age, resources were constantly redirected towards Anthem in a failed attempt to achieve success in the game-as-a-service model.

Darrah’s comment on EA’s absorption of studios raises concerns about the culture and identity of BioWare following its acquisition in 2008. In his own words, the structural changes made by EA in 2017 sealed BioWare’s fate, indicating that the company showed no real interest in preserving the legacy of one of its most beloved franchises.

With the future of Dragon Age uncertain and the recent controversy that has arisen, many fans are wondering if this new installment will be able to recapture the essence that made the saga a benchmark in the world of RPGs.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest title from BioWare, has not met the commercial expectations that Electronic Arts had projected. Despite being part of one of the most recognized franchises in the fantasy RPG genre, the game has had disappointing performance, leaving many players dissatisfied with its offering. This situation has led to it being considered a failure for EA, which hoped it would become a milestone within the genre.

Very clear signs that it could arrive soon on the Xbox service

To facilitate access and expand its audience, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now available on the PS Plus Essential subscription, which is not a good indicator for a AAA game. Additionally, the title has started to appear in the PC Game Pass store, suggesting it may be coming to the platform in the near future. Through EA Play, which is part of PC Game Pass Ultimate, players also have access to a demo of the game, which could help attract new players.

On March 20, BioWare released a free DLC for PC consumers, which includes temporary weapon cosmetics for the character Rook. However, this content will only be available to those who purchase the game before April 9, 2025. To boost its presence in the market, Dragon Age: The Veilguard also features an attractive 50% discount in the Valve store, bringing its price on Steam to €29.99.

With these moves, EA and BioWare seem to be looking for new strategies to regain ground and rekindle interest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Although the game has received mixed reviews, the effort to ensure its accessibility suggests that the developers are determined to improve the experience and its overall reception among RPG fans.

The rebirth of Dragon Age… Or so Bioware intends

Despite receiving praise for its combat and visual design, The Veilguard has not met the sales targets that Electronic Arts expected. Andrew Wilson, the company’s CEO, mentioned that the game lacked the shared world features that have popularized other titles, such as Destiny, which limited its audience. This comment highlights a growing need in the video game market for interconnected experiences, something that The Veilguard did not offer.

The development of the game was marked by significant changes, as Bioware had to pivot from a live service approach to a more traditional design. Despite the difficulties, the company managed to retain unique elements of combat and design that have been acclaimed by critics. The combat mechanics are described as strategic and entertaining, which has led many to consider The Veilguard a satisfying conclusion to the Dragon Age series.

The inclusion of the game in the PlayStation Plus service can be seen as a strategy to increase its player base after a disappointing debut in a competitive launch environment. While some may interpret it as a sign of failure, the opportunity to try one of Bioware’s recent creations may attract new fans and rekindle interest in this chapter of the saga.

If you like Dragon Age, a former BioWare producer reveals that you should play this Sonic game

Mark Darrah, former executive producer of BioWare, has revealed an interesting detail about Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, an RPG featuring Sonic released in 2008. According to Darrah, the game uses the same dialogue system as Dragon Age: Origins, although adapted to work on the Nintendo DS. “At its core, it’s the same stack of code,” Darrah commented, highlighting that, due to the order of release, one could argue that Dragon Age inherited part of its code from Sonic Chronicles. The development team for Sonic Chronicles was surprisingly small, with fewer than 20 people, which, according to Darrah, provided a […]

The development team of Sonic Chronicles was surprisingly small, with fewer than 20 people, which, according to Darrah, gave a sense of “magic” to the project. This compact work environment allowed for closer collaboration and greater creativity in the development of the title, which remains one of Darrah’s favorites.

Was Mass Effect on the DS? It Almost Happened

However, the team did not stop there; they initially had plans to create a Mass Effect game for the same console. This project, which promised a first-person intergalactic hacking experience, was canceled due to the economic difficulties associated with launching games on the Nintendo DS platform.

In a broader context, it has been reported that BioWare has reduced its workforce to approximately 100 employees following recent layoffs related to the performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The situation has generated criticism, even from the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3, who questioned the effectiveness of these measures as a long-term solution. According to this developer, the layoffs are more of an immediate response to financial problems than an effective strategy to improve the situation in the company in the long term.

Wilson described the third quarter as a period of undesired financial performance, highlighting that the net bookings of Respawn’s Apex Legends also fell compared to the previous year.

EA, at the service of what gamers are looking for

Despite receiving a good critical reception, Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to resonate with a broad audience, leading EA to reevaluate its approach to games-as-a-service features. In an extremely competitive market, games need to connect directly with the demands of players, who are looking for shared world features and deeper engagement, Wilson commented.

Amid these challenges, Wilson emphasized that EA is considering a significant update for Apex Legends, possibly an Apex 2.0, which could be released after the new Battlefield title, scheduled for before April 2026. This marks a notable shift, as in the previous call Wilson had stated that there were no plans for a new version of Apex. The trajectory of that franchise’s business has not been in the direction we wanted, Wilson added, highlighting the need for a more significant change in the player experience.

The importance of live service games becomes clear, representing 74% of EA’s revenue, which amounts to $5.449 billion of the $7.347 billion generated in 2024. This focus on live services indicates a shift in EA’s strategy, aiming to ensure the longevity of its most beloved franchises.

Wilson was optimistic about the future of EA’s franchises, stating that they have the potential to last for decades and that Apex could be one of those experiences that continue to evolve over time.

Is EA in trouble? Its CEO highlights the difficulties in adapting to live service models

In a recent financial call, EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, spoke about the performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, suggesting that the game failed to resonate with a broad audience and lacked typical live service features. Don’t Mess with Mass Effect

Wilson emphasized that for a game like The Veilguard to succeed, it must directly connect with the demands of players seeking shared experiences and deeper engagement. This statement has been seen as an attempt to justify the lack of live service components in the game, which has sparked criticism about the direction EA is taking with its future developments, including iconic franchises like Mass Effect.

The situation at BioWare is concerning; many observers fear that the pressure to adopt a live service model could sacrifice the quality of future releases. In contrast, the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, a single-player RPG that has sold over 10 million copies, underscores the viability and demand for high-quality single-player games. This success has fueled criticism of the notion that the lack of live service elements was the cause of The Veilguard’s performance.

With the shadow of business decisions focused on maximizing revenue, the future of BioWare and its ability to deliver meaningful experiences seem increasingly uncertain. The constant pivots and lack of clear focus could prove disastrous for promising titles like Mass Effect 5, leaving fans worried about what is to come.

One of BioWare’s most ambitious games comes to an end… a few months after being born

It has just arrived and we already have to say goodbye. It seems the best always leave first. The latest update for Dragon Age: The Veilguard has arrived, and some analysts suggest it could be the game’s final update. This new version mainly focuses on bug fixes, addressing significant issues that have affected players’ experience. Among the bug fixes, a problem where the character Rook could only flirt with Lucanis in a specific conversation has been resolved, as well as a bug that caused Rook to get stuck in a drowning loop when he should be rescued by his allies. Additionally, level recommendations for side quests have been added, which will improve the game’s quality of life.

As it comes, it goes

The company has confirmed that The Veilguard will not receive any more expansions, and the developers are ready to embark on other projects, including the next installment of Mass Effect. This change of direction has not surprised the followers, as in November 2024 BioWare had already hinted at their intention to conclude the game’s support. The phrase used by BioWare, “Dareth shiral” (which means “goodbye”), has led many to interpret that the company is ready to leave this Dragon Age behind.

With these changes, the future of BioWare seems to be heading towards new and exciting opportunities, while fans of Dragon Age and Mass Effect eagerly await the company’s upcoming news.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard turned out great, but BioWare has reasons not to remaster the original trilogy

Dragon Age is a beloved franchise that, with its ups and downs, has always maintained the favor of critics and the public. Therefore, with the success of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, many people are returning to the original trilogy. And many people are considering the possibility of a remaster of it. However, Bioware has made it clear that this possibility is not on the table. And it doesn’t seem likely.

Why is a Dragon Age remaster not possible?

According to an interview with Rolling Stone, the creative director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, John Epler, it is unlikely that we will see a remastered version of Dragon Age like the Legendary Edition of Mass Effect. The reason is that Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age were developed using Eclipse Engine, an internal Bioware engine, and Inquisition was created with Frostbite, the DICE engine used for Battlefield games. There are few people left with experience using the former.

While with Frostbite they have fewer problems, according to Epler, there are only 20 people at Bioware currently who have come to use Eclipse. Not even those who know it in depth or are well acquainted with its functioning. This makes its remastering much more complex.

That said, Epler states that the studio loves original games. And that they do not rule out the possibility of doing a remaster of them someday. Meanwhile, we can only enjoy Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which was released to great critical and public reception on October 31st for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.

Dragon Age™: The Veilguard is a single-player role-playing game from BioWare and Electronic Arts, serving as the fourth main title in the long-running fantasy franchise, Dragon Age. It’s set in Thedas, now facing a new threat after the civil unrest tackled in its predecessor Dragon Age: Inquisition. Here, players can expect next-generation graphics and a larger map with more locations than its predecessors.
