A new installment of a classic fighting game franchise will arrive in 2025

Fatal Fury returns with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, a new installment of Garou: Mark of the Wolves, which promises to bring back the best of the franchise.

The landscape of fighting games in the 90s and 00s is nothing like the current landscape. While today there is an important niche with anime fighting games and a scene dominated by Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Guilty Gear, there was a time when this was not so simple. There were very regular releases of games in this genre, with names and companies dominating the discourse that have now been practically forgotten. Or at least, relegated to the background.

One of these names is SNK. They are now going to revive one of their most beloved franchises, the classic Fatal Fury, with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

With a release date set for early 2025, this game was originally announced with an extremely brief and uninformative teaser in August 2022 during the EVO celebration. The biggest fighting game tournament in the world. Now we have been given a deeper look at the game, allowing us to gather the first details about it.

In this nearly three-minute trailer, we can gather quite a few things. The cel shading style of the characters with 3D background models seems to be inherited from another SNK game, King of Fighters, and five characters have already been confirmed, four of them returning from the original with a new addition in the form of the mysterious Preecha.

In terms of gameplay, it strongly resembles a combination of Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Real Bout Fatal Fury. That is, a fast-paced game with combo chains and a powerful blocking system based on parry – the Just Defend system. Additionally, there seems to be some kind of special attack reminiscent of Street Fighter 6’s Drive, but it is still unclear how it will work in practice.

Nevertheless, we won’t have to wait long to know more. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves won’t be released until 2024, but it will be playable at the upcoming EVO Japan, which will take place from April 27th to 29th in Tokyo, Japan.

PlayStation 5 Takes a Hit: EVO Event Raises Concerns About Physical Durability

During EVO 2023, some PlayStation 5 consoles saw their USB ports literally melt, causing problems for gamers.

There is no greater enemy of modern technology than heat. Microchips and high temperatures are a bad combination, and if miniaturization isn’t progressing as expected, it’s partly due to limitations in battery size and the increasing need for efficient cooling. While elegant and intelligent design can often address these issues, it’s not always sufficient or properly implemented. Sony learned this the hard way over the past weekend.

The Evo 2023 event took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, this past weekend, marking the largest fighting game event in the US, and perhaps the world. This gathering brought together a massive number of people with a vast array of consoles in an enclosed space, which, even if well-cooled (and we assume Las Vegas is), ended up stress-testing the machines. So much so that many PlayStation 5 consoles revealed their limits.

Several professional players who made it to the third day of the tournaments have complained on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the PlayStation 5 consoles they were playing on were heating up to the point of damaging their USB adapters. This is a dramatic issue because, in fact, all professional fighting game players use wired USB controllers due to the lower reaction time compared to wireless connections. This means that, at best, they had an unusable cable for the remainder of the matches, and at worst, their means of continuing in the tournament had been completely destroyed.

While Sony has not officially addressed this matter, it’s a significant problem because the primary promoter of Evo is the Japanese company, which acquired the organizing company in 2021. In other words, only PlayStation 5 consoles are used for the tournament. Considering that the console only has one USB port on the front, if the heat damages the port – even if the connector remains intact – it renders the console unusable for the rest of the tournament until it’s fixed.

If this turns out to be more than an isolated issue, Sony should make a statement addressing the matter and explaining how they plan to resolve it. The integrity of Evo 2024 could be at risk due to this, but also the integrity of any other tournament and, of course, that of any PlayStation 5 out there. Because if heat affects it in this way, considering how climate change is only intensifying, Sony can’t exactly claim to have a minor problem on their hands.

EVO 2023: All You Need to Know About the Thrilling Fighting Game Extravaganza

The top 6 of the four most prominent games, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Strive, and Street Fighter 6, will receive the most visibility during the special day 3 event.

Indeed, before all the exciting tournament action, there will be much more information to unveil. Both Capcom and Bandai Namco will be showcasing new content for Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, respectively.
