Nick Frost has been cast to play Rubeus Hagrid in the new HBO series based on the Harry Potter universe, marking a significant shift in the character following Robbie Coltrane’s iconic performance in the films. Frost, known for his great versatility in comedy and dramatic acting, has expressed his intention to bring a new perspective to Hagrid, describing him as funny, tender, and protective. In his statements, Frost has been clear that he will not seek to replicate Coltrane’s performance, but rather offer an interpretation that honors the character’s legacy while exploring its essence.
J.K. Rowling… happy with the entire cast?
The series will be carried out using a format of one book per season, which will allow for deeper development of the characters and plots. Frost revealed that filming for each season will take between ten and eleven months, promising a thorough approach to the narrative. With a more detailed focus on the story, Frost hopes to explore the various facets of Hagrid, who is described as a lost child, fun, warm, with a special connection to the magical creatures that inhabit Hogwarts.
Among the notable cast are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, with new actors taking on the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, played by Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton, respectively. J.K. Rowling, the author of the original series and producer of the project, has assured that she will not interfere in the casting, amid criticism regarding her views on trans rights.
Casey Bloys, president of content at HBO, has also addressed concerns about Rowling’s influence on the series, stating that Harry Potter will not be secretly influenced by anything. With this new adaptation, fans hope to revitalize the magic of the Harry Potter world in a format that promises to be narratively enriching.
